A hierarchical surrogate approach to biomass ethanolysis reaction kinetic modelling.

The reaction mechanism and kinetics of the sulfuric acid catalysed ethanolysis of glucose, cellulose, xylan, and corncob were investigated using a combination of experiments and empirical reaction mechanism modelling. The experimental study was carried out in ethanol at various temperatures between 150 °C and 200 °C. Ethanol mediates the depolymerisation and formation of ethyl levulinate from the carbohydrates in the substrates. Ethanol itself is converted to the corresponding ether in a parallel acid-catalysed condensation reaction. The complementary synergistic thermal and combustion propert

Biosorption of chromium (VI) onto NaOH activated Codium tomentosum biomass.

Batch experiments were conducted to examine the efficacy of NaOH activated Codium tomentosum biomass on the sorption of hexavalent chromium. Several influencing parameters like pH, contact time, dosage and initial chromium(VI) concentration was experimented at 20°C. The monolayer sorption capacity was found to be 5.504 ± 0.360 mg g(-1). Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm implied favorable condition of chromium(VI) biosorption, based on R2 values. Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm showed the best fit linearity and infered that adsorption energy as 4.888 ± 0.129 kJ mol(-1). Pseudo-second order kinetic…

Aquatic ecological risks due to cyanide releases from biomass burning.

Aquatic toxicity due to the creation and mobilization of chemical constituents by fire has been little studied, despite reports of post-fire fish kills attributed to unspecified pyrogenic toxicants. We examined releases of cyanides from biomass burning and their effect on surface runoff water. In laboratory test burns, available cyanide concentrations in leachate from residual ash were much higher than in leachate from partially burned and unburned fuel and were similar to or higher than the 96-h median lethal concentration (LC50) for rainbow trout (45 microg/l). Free cyanide concentrations in…

Biomass conversion to mixed alcohol fuels using the MixAlco process.

The MixAlco process is a patented technology that converts any biodegradable material (e.g., sorted municipal solid waste, sewage sludge, industrial biosludge, manure, agricultural residues, energy crops) into mixed alcohol fuels containing predominantly 2-propanol, but also higher alcohols up to 7-tridecanol. The feedstock is treated with lime to increase its digestibility. Then, it is fed to a fermentor in which a mixed culture of acid-forming microorganisms produces carboxylic acids. Calcium carbonate is added to the fermentor to neutralize the acids to their corresponding carboxylate salt.

Feedstock-Dependent Thermogravimetric Kinetic Screening across Six Representative Biomass Types and Apparent Kinetics of a Volcanic-Derived Iron-Rich Mineral for Biomass Chemical Looping Applications.

Natural iron-rich minerals are potential low-cost alternatives for biomass direct chemical looping (BDCL) systems, but their interactions with different biomass feedstocks remain poorly understood. This study evaluated Badar stone, a volcanic iron-rich natural mineral from Indonesia, against synthetic Fe2O3 using six representative biomass feedstocks, consisting of three lignocellulosic biomasses, namely rice husk, sawdust, and sago waste, and three microalgal biomasses, namely Aurantiochytrium, Euglena, and Spirulina. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under N2 was employed to examine devolatil…

Unintended Consequences of Biomass Markets and Implications for Nitrate Reduction Policy.

Energy crops are considered a promising approach to reduce nitrate (NO3) loss to groundwater and surface water from cropland, but they are costly to adopt and will require biomass market-based payments and/or policy incentives to induce production. We developed a spatially explicit integrated economic and biophysical model to assess the implications of biomass markets at various biomass prices for nitrate loss in the Raccoon River Basin, Iowa. We also examine the cost-effectiveness of alternative policy approaches to achieve nitrate loss reduction, including a nitrate price and/or a corn stove…

Upcycling of cardoon root biomass into polyhydroxyalkanoate nanocarriers for docetaxel delivery.

Lignocellulosic residues represent a promising low-cost feedstock for the sustainable production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), although their integration into high-value biomedical applications remains limited. This work reports an integrated approach for the valorization of cardoon root biomass into poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) and its subsequent application as a nanocarrier for docetaxel delivery. Cardoon roots were subjected to cascade fractionation followed by deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based pretreatment to enhance lignin removal while preserving the carbohyd…

Primary challenges in the upcycling of genetically modified spent microbial biomass.

Precision fermentation is expanding rapidly as a platform for producing high-value proteins and ingredients. This expansion consequently results in a significant increase in genetically modified spent microbial biomass (GMSMB). At present, the dominant industrial practice is to sterilise and dispose of this biomass in landfills. This approach incurs significant costs associated with sterilisation, transport, and waste management, placing financial pressure on producers and limiting the sustainability of the sector. GMSMB is nutrient-rich, often containing high levels of protein, amino acids, v…

Guidelines for preventing and reporting contamination in low-biomass microbiome studies.

Numerous important environments harbour low levels of microbial biomass, including certain human tissues, the atmosphere, plant seeds, treated drinking water, hyper-arid soils and the deep subsurface, with some environments lacking resident microbes altogether. These low microbial biomass environments pose unique challenges for standard DNA-based sequencing approaches, as the inevitability of contamination from external sources becomes a critical concern when working near the limits of detection. Likewise, lower-biomass samples can be disproportionately impacted by cross-contamination and prac…

The Formation of Covalent Linkages in Lignocellulosic Biomass via the Oxocarbenium Intermediate.

Understanding the formation of lignin-carbohydrate complex (LCC) linkages in lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) is crucial because these interactions contribute to plant recalcitrance. Herein, a new mechanism for LCC linkage formation, based on the formation of the oxocarbenium intermediate, is explored. We applied density functional theory to monosaccharides and monolignol molecules serving as models for LCB. Mannopyranose, xylopyranose, arabinofuranose, and glucopyranuronic acid were used for hemicellulose; p-coumaryl alcohol, coniferyl alcohol, and sinapyl alcohol were employed for lignin. Compu…

Lignocellulosic biomass fermentation: a roadmap for Candida famata and Ogataea polymorpha.

The global transition to renewable energy sources requires efficient microbial platforms capable of fermenting carbon sources present in lignocellulosic biomass. Conventional yeasts like Saccharomyces cerevisiae face critical limitations, particularly in pentose sugar utilization and inhibitor resistance. This review focuses on two emerging nonconventional yeasts, Candida famata and Ogataea polymorpha, which exhibit native or engineered capacities to overcome these bottlenecks. We present a comparative analysis of their stress tolerance, metabolic versatility, and recent advances in genetic en…

Synthesis and Characterization of Biochar Obtained by Partial Delignification of Waste Biomass.

Biochar activation is achieved by removing tar formed in the pores during the thermal treatment of biomass, thereby increasing pore volume. This process typically involves entraining tar with steam at elevated temperatures for extended durations. In this study, a reduction in lignin content in grape seeds through partial solubilization, prior to thermal treatment, is proposed. Initially, grape seeds were treated with a basic sodium sulfide solution, followed by conditioning with either phosphoric acid or zinc chloride and then drying and calcination. The synthesized adsorbents were characteriz…

Prescribed biomass burning effects on soil NO emissions in South Carolina.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) are key atmospheric trace gases that affect air quality, oxidation chemistry, and nitrogen deposition. Although anthropogenic NOx emissions have declined due to regulations, natural sources like soil emissions are becoming relatively more important. Biomass burning can alter soil nitrogen cycling and potentially influence soil NO fluxes, yet few controlled studies exist. Here, we examined how prescribed burning affects soil NO emissions in a South Carolina forest using incubation experiments. The study site is a sandhill ecosystem dominated by upland oak and lo…

Harnessing Cattail Biomass for Sustainable Fibers and Engineered Bioproducts: A Review.

Cattail (Typha), a wetland plant, is emerging as a sustainable materials resource. While most of the Typha species are proven to be a fiber-yielding crop, Typha latifolia exhibits the broadest leaf size (5-30 mm), yields highest amount of fiber (≈190.9 g), and captures maximum CO2 (≈1270 g). Alkaline retting is the most efficient degumming process for cattail fibers to achieve maximum fiber yield (30%-46%). Cattail leaves exhibit a distinctive bionic structural model consisting of epidermis and leaf blade at macro level and non-diaphragm aerenchyma, fiber cables, partitions, and diaphragms at
