The ability to monitor levels of endogenous markers and clearance profiles of drugs and their metabolites can improve the quality of biomedical research and precision with which therapies are individualized. Towards this end, electrochemical aptamer-based (EAB) sensors have been developed that support the real-time monitoring of specific analytes in vivo with clinically relevant specificity and sensitivity. A challenge associated with the in vivo deployment of EAB sensors, however, is how to manage the signal drift which, although correctable, ultimately leads to unacceptably low signal-to-noi

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing has been rapidly evolving in recent years, while the introduction of small molecules with specific recognition functions into the sensing interface remains a nascent area of study. In this work, we reported a PEC biosensor for formaldehyde (FA) detection based on photoinduced electron transfer (PET)-gated electron injection between organic small molecules and inorganic semiconducting substrates. Specifically, an FA-responsive probe (NA-FA-COOH) and TiO2 nanoarrays were integrated to construct a PEC platform (NFC/TiO2) via a coordination bond. NFC served simul

Electrochemical sensors play a significant role in detecting chemical ions, molecules, and pathogens in water and other applications. These sensors are sensitive, portable, fast, inexpensive, and suitable for online and in-situ measurements compared to other methods. They can provide the detection for any compound that can undergo certain transformations within a potential window. It enables applications in multiple ion detection, mainly since these sensors are primarily non-specific. In this paper, we provide a survey of electrochemical sensors for the detection of water contaminants, i.e., p

For electrochemical immunosensors, inexpensive electrodes with fast redox kinetics, and simple stable methods of electrode functionalization are vital. However, many inexpensive and easy to fabricate electrodes suffer from poor redox kinetics, and functionalization can often be difficult and/or unstable. Diazonium tosylates are particularly stable soluble salts that can be useful for electrode functionalization. Recently developed thermoplastic electrodes (TPEs) have been inexpensive, moldable, and highly electroactive carbon composite materials. Herein, the synthesis and grafting of diazonium

False positives are common and frequently occurring in detection of ochratoxin A (OTA) due to the complexity of the food matrix. In this paper, a novel bipolar electrode-electrochemiluminescence (BPE-ECL) sensing platform for sensitive OTA detection with one-step grain pretreatment was proposed. The biosensor uses cathode of closed BPE as a functional sensing interface and anode as a signal collection interface. On the functional sensing interface, the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) catalyze the polymerization of aniline to form polyaniline (PANI) on nucleic acid backbone which is supplied by DN

Electrochemical DNA (E-DNA) biosensors enable the detection and quantification of a variety of molecular targets, including oligonucleotides, small molecules, heavy metals, antibodies, and proteins. Here we describe the design, electrode preparation and sensor attachment, and voltammetry conditions needed to generate and perform measurements using E-DNA biosensors against two protein targets, the biological toxins ricin and botulinum neurotoxin. This method can be applied to generate E-DNA biosensors for the detection of many other protein targets, with potential advantages over other systems

The presence of captan residues in apples shows high toxicity, which often causes eye and skin irritation, dermatitis, conjunctivitis, and vomiting in humans. In this context, an electrochemical biosensor based on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) immobilized on a ZnO nanorod interface has been proposed. In this work, Hill, dose-response, and first-, second-, and third-order polynomial regression models were successfully applied and the prediction ability of these models was tested with the use of current density obtained from the cyclic voltammograms of appropriate captan solutions. The Pt/ZnO/AChE

Gallium nitride (GaN) high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) biosensors have recently emerged as promising platforms for highly sensitive and label-free detection of biomolecules. Their exceptional electrical properties, including high carrier mobility, together with the wide bandgap and strong chemical bonds of GaN materials, provide excellent stability under high temperatures, ionizing radiation, and chemically harsh environments. Despite significant experimental progress, comprehensive analytical models capable of linking biomolecular recognition events to the electrical response of GaN b

Graphene-based sensors and biosensors are attractive candidates for chemical and biological threat detection due to their high surface sensitivity, rapid transduction, and low-power operation, yet real-world deployment remains constrained by cross-sensitivity, interface instability in biosensing, and limited validation under operational conditions. This review consolidates key requirements for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) detection and proposes a structured roadmap to guide the transition from laboratory demonstrations to field-relevant sensing systems. The roadmap is

Consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) is difficult to monitor because enzyme production, lignocellulose degradation, sugar release, and fermentation occur simultaneously under sparse measurement, feedstock variability, and plant-model mismatch conditions. This study proposes a computational sensor-set design framework for digital-twin-assisted CBP monitoring. A five-state virtual plant, consisting of active biomass, cellulolytic enzyme activity, residual insoluble substrate, soluble sugar, and ethanol, was used to evaluate all 16 ethanol-mandatory measurement packages formed from ethanol, sugar, bi

In disease analysis, antibody and DNA modes reveal the limitations of insufficient sensitivity and accuracy, respectively, due to the susceptibility for matrix effects and the inability to effectively capture targets. A DNA-antibody bioconjugation, leveraging both complementary advantages, is a feasible resolution. This work proposed a novel self-assemble DNA-antibody nanodevice based on target-responsive DNA colocalization strategy, and the accordingly constructed diagnosis mode triggered strand displacement to raise molecular etching. This design enabled the controlled release of luminophore

DNA computing circuits leverage molecular interactions to construct a highly parallel and biologically compatible information processing paradigm. However, their development has been constrained by a critical gap between intrinsic computational parallelism and the limited readout bandwidth. Multibit outputs from complex circuits often require multiple separate tests, limiting the integration and debugging efficiency. Here, we overcome this bottleneck by decoupling computation from readout via a DNA origami display-based interface by integrating strand displacement and unstable binding reaction

Next-generation diagnostics is expected to use the abundant data on living bodies and provide sufficiently useful healthcare information. A significant portion of the data are considered to be collected from microRNAs (miRNAs), which play crucial roles in various activities inside the body. Here, we demonstrate single-miRNA detection using metasurface fluorescence (FL) biosensors, which are optimized all-dielectric nanostructured surfaces featuring excellent FL detection capability. Ultimate high-sensitivity discrimination of one miRNA from zero miRNA is achieved at the subattomolar level by e

This review takes stock of the various optical fiber-based biosensors that could be used for in vivo applications. We discuss the characteristics that biosensors must have to be suitable for such applications and the corresponding transduction modes. In particular, we focus on optical fiber biosensors based on fluorescence, evanescent wave, plasmonics, interferometry, and Raman phenomenon. The operational principles, implemented solutions, and performances are described and debated. The different sensing configurations, such as the side- and tip-based fiber biosensors, are illustrated, and the

Long-term monitoring of organic pollutants in the soil is a major environmental challenge. We propose to meet this issue by the development of a polymer dedicated to selectively react with H2S, coating surface acoustic wave transducers designed as passive cooperative targets with the compound, and probing their response using Ground Penetrating RADAR, thus providing the capability to monitor the presence of H2S in the subsurface environment. The selectivity is brought by including lead(II) cation in a reticulated polymer matrix which can be deposited as a thin layer on a surface acoustic wave

A wide variety of species, such as different ions, reactive oxygen species, and biomolecules play critical roles in many cell functions. These species are responsible for a range of cellular functions such as signaling, and disturbed levels could be involved in many diseases, such as diabetes, cancer, neurodegeneration etc. Thus, sensitive and specific detection methods for these biomarkers could be helpful for early disease detection and mechanistic investigations. New ultrasensitive sensors for detection of markers within living cells are a growing field of research. The present review provi

Over the past four decades, Lyme disease has remained a virulent and pervasive illness, persisting throughout North America and many other regions of the world. Recent increases in illness in many countries has sparked a renewed interest in improved Lyme diagnostics. While current standards of diagnosis are acceptable for the late stages of the disease, it remains difficult to accurately diagnose early forms of the illness. In addition, current diagnostic methods tend to be relatively expensive and require a large degree of laboratory-based analysis. Biosensors represent the fusion of biologic
