Testing Fraternal Birth Order Effects and Antagonistic Effects for Homosexual Men: Power Comparison of Various Methods.

Research on the biological determinants of male homosexual preference has long realized that the older brother effect (FBOE, i.e., a higher fraternal birth rank of homosexuals) and the antagonist effect (AE, i.e., more fertile women have a higher chance of having a homosexual son) can both generate family data where homosexual men have more siblings and more older siblings than heterosexual men. Various statistical approaches were proposed in the recent literature to evaluate whether the action of FBOE or AE could be discriminated from empirical data, by controlling for the other effect. Here,

Implementation of an Automatic Stop Order and Initial Antibiotic Exposure in Very Low Birth Weight Infants.

Objective To evaluate if an antibiotic automatic stop order (ASO) changed early antibiotic exposure (use in the first 7 days of life) or clinical outcomes in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. Study Design We compared birth characteristics, early antibiotic exposure, morbidity, and mortality data in VLBW infants (with birth weight <= 1500 g) born 2 years before (pre-ASO group, n = 313) to infants born in the 2 years after (post-ASO, n = 361) implementation of an ASO guideline. Early antibiotic exposure was quantified by days of therapy (DOT) and antibiotic use > 48 hours. Secondary outcomes

Sibship size, sibling sex ratio, birth order, and parental age in homosexual and nonhomosexual gender dysphorics.

This study investigated whether demographic variables previously reported to differentiate ordinary homosexuals from heterosexuals also diff … e other groups did not differ from the expected value. The homosexual men had a significantly later birth order than the nonhomosexual men (p = .004); the homosexual women, who fell in between, did not differ significantly from either male group. There were no between-groups differences in paternal or maternal age at the time of the subject's birth. The resul …

Associations of Birth Order with Early Adolescent Growth, Pubertal Onset, Blood Pressure and Size: Evidence from Hong Kong's "Children of 1997" Birth Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Birth order has been proposed as a cardiovascular risk factor, because the lower birth weight and greater infant weight gain typical of firstborns could programme metabolism detrimentally. METHODS: We examined the associations of birth order (firstborn or laterborn) with birth weight-for-gestational age, length/height and body mass index (BMI) z-scores during infancy, childhood, and puberty using generalized estimating equations, with age at pubertal onset using interval-censored regression and with age-, sex- and height-standardized blood pressure, height and BMI z-scores at 13 y…

The effects of birth order on neonatal outcomes in early-preterm, late-preterm and term twin infants.

Objectives: Birth order is one of the main factors that influences the neonatal outcome of twins. However, there is little prior data regarding the effect of birth order under different clinical circumstances. This study investigates the effect of birth order on the neonatal outcomes of twins delivered during early-preterm, late-preterm and term gestations according to chorionicity, delivery mode and indication for delivery. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of women with twin pregnancies delivered at 24-40 weeks of gestation between 1995 and 2014. We excluded twin pregnancies with …

The Interplay of Cesarean-Section Delivery and First-Birth Order as Risk Factors in Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

BACKGROUND: Childhood B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL) has been associated with early-life exposures, including birth by cesarean section (C-section), and a deficit of social exposure (first child). These exposures as proxies for microbiome acquisition in infancy are essential to prime the immune system and restrain later dysregulated immune responses that can trigger ALL in susceptible individuals. We tested risk factors pertaining to immune stimulation that may impact BCP-ALL development. METHODS: Cases comprised 1,126 children (0-12 years) with ALL (BCP-ALL: 78.5%) f

The effect of piglet vitality, birth order, and blood lactate on the piglet growth performances and preweaning survival.

BACKGROUND: Litter size is going up in modern pig production. Due to large litter size and increased farrowing duration, newborn piglets, during parturition, can suffer from asphyxiation. This alters their blood energy parameters and can contribute to their reduced vitality at birth, which is detrimental to their growth performance and survival. We aimed to evaluate the effects of vitality score, piglets' umbilical cord blood lactate, glucose, and butyrate, and birth order on growth performance and the preweaning mortality of piglets. RESULTS: The more vital (vitality score 2, VS2) piglets ha…

Sibship size, birth order and risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and infectious mononucleosis: a nationwide study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains enigmatic in endemic and non-endemic areas. Early-life infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) may predispose to NPC development, whereas delayed primary infection with EBV may cause infectious mononucleosis (IM). METHODS: We used Swedish population and health registers to investigate whether potential indicators of early EBV infection, such as birth order, sibship size, maternal age and paternal age, are related to the subsequent risks for NPC and IM. We conducted two nested case-control studies, one for each health outcome,…

The effect of parental age, birth order and other variables on early childhood mortality: a Caribbean example.

The 4275 births to women of native ancestry that took place on the island of St Barthélemy, French West Indies between 1878 and 1970 were analyzed according to the sex of the child, the year of birth, maternal age, maternal parity, paternal age and the number of children the father already had to determine the effects of these variables on rates of perinatal death, death before age 1 and death before age 5. The year of birth, the number of children the father already had, and maternal parity influenced death before age 1 and death before age 5. The sex of the child also influenced the probabil

Genetics of acheiropodia ("The handless and footless families of Brazil"): IV. Sex ratio, consanguinity and birth order.

The sex ratio among acheiropods is shown to be not significantly different from the sex ratio among their normal sibs, as well as among other segments of the family (parental sibships, cousin sibships and other sibships). The frequency of consanguineous marriages among the parents of acheiropods (82%) is one of the highest thus far reported among parents of individuals affected with rare autosomal recessive anomalies or diseases. No evidence was found of any overall positive or negative birth order effect on the incidence of acheiropodia. These results further strengthen the hypothesis of a si…

Relationship between levels of postnatal depression and its correlates; neonate's birth order and mother's age among new mothers.

CONTEXT: Postnatal depression (PND) is a well-known cause of distress among new mothers depicting a significant public health problem affecting women, neonates, and the family.[1] During the postnatal period, there is a rise in the physical and emotional pressure on the mother, and the exhaustion associated with PND may affect her capacity as a mother to provide love and care to the newborn. AIMS: To study the relationship between the levels of PND and new mothers' age and birth order of the neonates. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Hospital setting and cross-sectional research design. METHODS AND MAT…

Relationship between Birth Order and Postnatal Growth until 4 Years of Age: The Japan Environment and Children's Study.

Later-borns tend to be shorter than first-borns in childhood and adulthood. However, large-scale prospective studies examining growth during infancy according to birth order are limited. We aimed to investigate the relationship between birth order and growth during the first 4 years of life in a Japanese prospective birth cohort study. A total of 26,249 full-term singleton births were targeted. General linear and multivariable logistic regression models were performed and adjusted for birth weight, parents' heights, maternal age at delivery, gestational weight gain, maternal smoking and alcoho…

Early Blood Analysis and Gas Exchange Monitoring in the Canine Neonate: Effect of Dam's Size and Birth Order.

In canines, size at birth is determined by the dam's weight, which would probably affect the newborn's viability due to litter size and birth order. Fetal hypoxia causes distress and acidemia. Identifying physiological blood alterations in the puppy during the first minute of life through the blood gas exchange of the umbilical cord could determine the puppy's risk of suffering asphyxiation during labor. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the birth order and dam's size during spontaneous labor and the alterations during the first minute of life. The results indicate that the dam's size…
