Liver is the primary source of numerous proteins that are critical for normal function of the blood coagulation cascade. Because of this, diseases of the liver, particularly when affiliated with severe complications like cirrhosis, are associated with abnormalities of blood clotting. Although conventional interpretation has inferred cirrhosis as a disorder of uniform bleeding risk, it is now increasingly appreciated as a disease wherein the coagulation cascade is precariously rebalanced. Moreover, prothrombotic risk factors are also associated with a more rapid progression of fibrosis in human…

OBJECTIVE: We undertook this study to determine whether changes in blood coagulability associated with peripheral arterial occlusive disease are due to contact with the atherosclerotic arterial wall or passage through distal ischemic tissue.
METHODS: Thirty patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease undergoing angiography participated in the study. Ankle-brachial pressure index was recorded before intervention. Blood samples taken from the aorta, common femoral artery, and common femoral vein were analyzed at thromboelastography. Angiograms were scored for stenotic disease by a radio

The diabetes mellitus is accompanied in its evolution by ample disturbances of the blood's fluid-coagulating equilibrium, which contribute to the initiation and development of the micro and macro-vascular complications. The early and accelerated atherosclerosis in diabetes mellitus obliged the medical world to the necessity to solve the pathogenic implied mechanisms: knowing them allowed us to apply a therapy that can prevent or improve the associated vascular pathology. The intense research made in the last decades mentioned that, in diabetes mellitus, all the stages of the hemostasis are aff

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence on coagulation and platelet function of two 6% medium molecular weight hydroxyethylstarch solutions (HES, MW 200,000, DS 0.5) made of potato (K) and corn (M) starch. Twenty patients undergoing elective vertebral disc surgery were randomly assigned to one of the groups. Haemoglobin, haematocrit, protein concentration, fibrinogen, antithrombin III, factor VIII:C, von-Willebrand-factor, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time and platelet maximum aggregation and maximum gradient of aggregation (inductors: ADP, epinephrine, coll

In patients with Behçet's disease, venous thrombosis has often been described as a complication. The pathogenesis of this complication, however, has not been fully understood. In this work, various parameters of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis were studied in 20 patients with Behçet's disease and 13 sex-matched healthy volunteers. Patients were classified into three subgroups according to the number of clinical signs involved; group I (no sign): 4 patients; group II (one or two signs): 11 patients; group III (more than three signs): 5 patients. Patients with Behçet's disease, showed an acti…

Protein C is a vitamin-K-dependent plasma glycoprotein that when activated inhibits coagulation by selectively inactivating the active forms of factor V and factor VIII. A specific antiserum to protein C has been raised, and plasma protein C levels have been measured by means of an electroimmunoassay in several physiological and pathological conditions. In 60 healthy adults there were no differences in protein C related to age or sex; protein C levels ranged from 72 to 139% of values in a normal plasma pool. Low levels were found in 12 healthy full-term newborn infants; the levels in 20 women

A relationship between microvascular disorders and sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) has been widely proposed. The vascular hypothesis, theorized for the onset of sudden SNHL (SSNHL), is among the most acknowledged: a localized acute cochlear damage, of ischemic or haemorrhagic nature, could be considered a causative factor of SSNHL. The aim of this review is to assess (i) the effect on hearing in patients affected by blood coagulation disorders (prothrombotic or haemorrhagic) and (ii) the possible etiopathogenetic mechanisms of the related hearing loss. A PRISMA-compliant review was performed…

Blood coagulation is a complicated dynamic process that maintains the blood's fluid state and prevents uncontrollable bleeding. The real-time monitoring of coagulation dynamics is critical for blood transfusion guidance, emergency management of trauma-induced coagulopathy, perioperative bleeding, and targeted hemostatic therapy. Here, we utilize optical vortex dynamics to detect the blood coagulation dynamic process in a rapid and non-contact manner. To characterize the temporal changes in viscoelastic properties of blood during coagulation, we track the stochastic motion of optical vortices i…

BACKGROUND: Protein S is a central regulator of coagulation as it critically participates in down-regulation of both extrinsic and intrinsic … ion.
CONCLUSIONS: Available evidence suggests that the role of protein S in the down-regulation of blood coagulation is mainly mediated through its high affinity binding to negatively charged phospholipid surfaces. This high affinity binding to negatively charged phospholipids helps bring the anticoagulant proteins to the membranes, resulting in efficient and targ …
