Association between quadriceps pain pressure threshold and willingness to complete a blood flow restriction training session.

BACKGROUND: Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is used to enhance muscle adaptations and performance. However, the limb occlusion pressure used in BFR can cause pain or discomfort, leading some individuals to discontinue the training. This study examined whether pain pressure threshold (PPT), demographics, training history, or self-perceived pain tolerance were associated with voluntary discontinuation of BFR training. METHODS: Thirty-seven participants provided informed consent. Researchers collected survey and PPT data from a novel quadriceps location, then conducted BFR training on the

Effects of 40% of Maximum Oxygen Uptake Intensity Cycling Combined with Blood Flow Restriction Training on Body Composition and Serum Biomarkers of Chinese College Students with Obesity.

Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) is a new method for promoting muscle growth and improving muscle function, even with relatively low-intensity exercise. BFRT on patients with obesity has not been extensively studied. This study aimed to analyze the effects of cycling at 40% of maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) combined with BFRT on body composition and serum biomarkers among college students with obesity. This pilot study included thirty-seven male college students with obesity aged 18-22 years (experimental group (EG): n = 18; control group (CG): n = 19). The EG conducted 40% VO2max cyclin

Electromyostimulation With Blood Flow Restriction for Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome in Active Duty Military Personnel: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: The high prevalence of patellofemoral pain in military service members results in strength loss, pain, and functional limitations during required physical performance tasks. Knee pain is often the limiting factor during high-intensity exercise for strengthening and functional improvement, thus limiting certain therapies. Blood flow restriction (BFR) improves muscle strength when combined with resistance or aerobic exercise and may serve as a possible alternative to high-intensity training during recovery. In our previous work, we showed that Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (

The effects of short-term blood flow restriction training on knee function and quality of life in older adults patients with tibial plateau fractures.

Tibial Plateau Fractures (TPF) are a common type of lower limb fracture, which has a significant impact on the quality of life of patients. Blood flow restriction (BFR) training is a recently developed training method that achieves high-intensity effects through low-load training. However, the scope of its application in the rehabilitation of older adults patients suffering from TPF has not yet been thoroughly explored. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of 4 weeks of BFR training on knee function and quality of life in older adults patients with TPF. A total of 92 older adu

Centrifugation-based plasma exchange overcomes blood flow restriction to rescue hyperviscosity syndrome in IgM-κ multiple myeloma: a case report.

When blood flow cannot be raised to the 150-200 mL/min threshold required for membrane-based therapeutic plasma exchange, centrifugation-based therapeutic plasma exchange represents the only mechanistically viable option-yet this specific clinical scenario has not been reported. We describe an 86-year-old man with IgM-κ multiple myeloma who developed hyperviscosity syndrome. Sequential membrane-based approaches failed owing to blood flow restriction: double-filtration plasmapheresis was discontinued when secondary membrane pressure reached 277 mmHg, and membrane-based therapeutic plasma exchan

Beetroot juice supplementation enhances the effects of blood flow restriction training on lower limb strength and vertical jump performance under fatigue in male university students: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Beetroot juice (BRJ) supplementation has the potential to enhance the effects of blood flow restriction (BFR) training in improving muscle strength and fatigue resistance; however, evidence supporting their combined effects remains limited. This study investigated whether BRJ supplementation enhances the effects of BFR training on muscle strength and fatigue resistance. METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included 20 male university students from the School of Sports, who were randomly assigned to a BFR group (n = 10, age: 21.9 ± 1.7 years) or a BFR +

Low-Load Blood-Flow Restricted Resistance Training Improves Finger Flexor Muscle Function in Experienced Climbers: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Low-load blood flow restriction training (LLBFRT) is a promising modality to improve muscle strength and endurance. In sport-climbing, LLBFRT may prove useful to reduce mechanical stress compared with traditional high-load resistance training (HLRT); however, previous climbing studies have failed to induce strength gains with LLBFRT, potentially due to insufficient training stimulus. This study thus aims to examine muscular adaptations to a 5-wk finger flexors LLBFRT program until failure, with comparison to HLRT. METHODS: Thirty-six advanced-to-elite climbers were randomly assigned

Sex-specific effects of fatiguing handgrip plus blood flow restriction on upper limb neuromuscular characteristics during a repetitive shoulder height task.

Blood flow restriction (BFR) aims to accelerate reperfusion post-effort and could provide benefits after shoulder fatiguing work. However, sex-specific effects of localized BFR on whole-limb features are unknown. Ten females and eleven males performed three 30-second repetitive pointing tasks (RPTs) (pre-fatigue, post-fatigue, and recovery). The fatiguing protocol was an intermittent submaximal handgrip task performed until failure to meet the target force (50% of maximum grip strength). Participants completed two sessions: without BFR and with 50% BFR applied to the upper arm during the handg

Protein supplementation optimizes muscle strength and hypertrophic responses induced by low-load training with blood flow restriction in resistance-trained individuals.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Low-load blood flow restriction (LL-BFR) training induces favorable changes in muscle hypertrophy and strength. However, the potential additive effect of LL-BFR and protein supplementation on these outcomes remains unclear. METHODS: Twenty-four recreationally resistance-trained men were randomly assigned to either a protein (PRO) or placebo (PLA) supplementation group in a 2:1 ratio. After being submitted to maximum dynamic strength (1-RM) and elbow flexors muscles cross-sectional area (EFCSA) assessments at baseline, participants were enrolled in a 3-week unilateral LL-BFR

ADAPTations to low load blood flow restriction exercise versus conventional heavier load resistance exercise in UK military personnel with persistent knee pain: protocol for the ADAPT study, a multi-centre randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Muscle atrophy, muscle weakness and localised pain are commonly reported following musculoskeletal injury (MSKI). To mitigate this risk and prepare individuals to return to sport or physically demanding occupations, resistance training (RT) is considered a vital component of rehabilitation. However, to elicit adaptations in muscle strength, exercise guidelines recommend lifting loads ≥ 70% of an individual's one repetition maximum (1-RM). Unfortunately, individuals with persistent knee pain are often unable to tolerate such high loads and this may negatively impact the duration and

Heat Acclimation with Blood Flow Restriction Improves Cognitive-Motor Dual-Task Ability and Neuromuscular Fatigue.

This study examined whether heat acclimation (HA), and HA with blood flow restriction (BFR) could attenuate cognition and neuromuscular function impairments in cognitive-motor dual-task (CMDT) during exercise-heat stress. Twenty trained adults were randomly assigned to one of two HA protocols over six sessions (~8 days). Each session consisted of 4 × 8-min self-regulated cycling intervals (5-min "strong effort", 3-min "moderate effort") in temperate conditions (20°C), immediately followed by 40-min hot water immersion (40°C). One group exercised with BFR during the "strong" bouts (50% arterial

Successful prenatal treatment with continuous chronic maternal hyperoxygenation therapy in hypoplastic left heart in two pregnancies: Case report.

Maternal hyperoxygenation (MH) has been studied as a diagnostic tool to evaluate pulmonary vasculature and as a treatment option to improve the growth of fetal left heart in fetuses with left-sided cardiac defects. Chronic maternal hyperoxygenation (CMH) therapy leads to an improvement in fetal pulmonary blood flow resulting in an enhanced venous return to the left heart with increased gestational age. With this manipulation it is anticipated to augment blood flow directed remodeling of the left heart structures and to improve left heart growth spanning from the mitral valve to the aortic isth

Maternal sildenafil impairs the cardiovascular adaptations to chronic hypoxaemia in fetal sheep.

KEY POINTS: Fetal growth restriction induces a haemodynamic response that aims to maintain blood flow to vital organs such as the brain, in the face of chronic hypoxaemia Maternal sildenafil treatment impairs the hypoxaemia-driven haemodynamic response and potentially compromises fetal development. ABSTRACT: Inadequate substrate delivery to a fetus results in hypoxaemia and fetal growth restriction (FGR). In response, fetal cardiovascular adaptations redirect cardiac output to essential organs to maintain oxygen delivery and sustain development. However, FGR infants remain at risk for cardiov
