We prospectively examined 298 sets (298 aerobic, 299 anaerobic, and 73 resin cultures) of blood cultures from 161 critically ill newborns. The attending physicians were unaware of the study. The mean blood volume per patient (aerobic and anaerobic) was 1.05 (range, 0.11 to 3.04) ml. The mean blood volume per aerobic bottle was 0.53 (range, 0.01 to 1.90) ml. Among aerobic samples 2.7% were less than or equal to 0.1 ml, 16% were less than or equal to 0.3 ml, 33% were less than or equal to 0.4 ml, and 55% were less than or equal to 0.5 ml. For anaerobic cultures the mean blood volume was 0.52 (ra…

Eleven healthy male volunteers were studied to determine the amount of blood displaced by the inflation of the antishock trousers (AST) at pressures of 40 and 100 mm Hg. Radioisotope scans were used to determine the blood volume distribution and the change in the volume of distribution with inflation of the AST. The volunteers were then phlebotomized approximately one liter of blood and the study was repeated. Less than 5% of the total blood volume was displaced with inflation of the AST. It is unlikely that the clinical improvement seen with inflation of the AST in hypovolemic shock is due to…

BACKGROUND: Sublingual nitroglycerin (SL NTG) is useful for treating acute decompensated heart failure, possibly by increasing splanchnic capacitance and reducing left ventricular (LV) preload. We evaluated a radionuclide method to study these effects, initially in subjects without heart failure.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Red blood cells were labelled by an in vitro method. Abdominal and chest images were obtained at rest, showing relative regional blood volumes. The abdomen was then re-imaged during progressive escalation of intrathoracic pressure using continuous positive airway pressure to asse…

The objective of the present study was to determine the minimal and maximum volume of blood droplets freely falling from various droplet-for … e greater than 200 mcl was considered to be a result of merging of several droplets and was termed 'blood volume'. The morphological features of the blood stains of different volume are described.

BACKGROUND: The cause of syncope remains unknown in 24% to 37% of cases even after standard diagnostic tests. Measuring blood volume may elucidate the mechanisms of syncope in the individual patient and prove helpful in determining optimal therapy. This report includes the largest set of blood volume measurements performed in syncope patients to date.
METHODS: We performed radioisotopic blood volume measurement (Daxor BVA-100) on 539 patients who presented to our center with syncope/presyncope of unclear etiology. There were 202 men and 337 women, ages 16 to 88 years; many were receiving trea…

The influence of the volume of blood cultured on the rate of detection of bacteremia was evaluated in a routine 12-tube blood culture system using 1693 samples from 1502 patients. Blood samples were drawn simultaneously into two transport tubes. The blood volume cultured was the only varying parameter. Generally, 17% more cultures with clinically significant microorganisms (both Enterobacteriaceae and gram-positive cocci) were found when blood from two instead of one tube was used (in most cases comparing 13-16 ml of blood with 6.5-8 ml). Of the most prevalent species, the maximum average extr…
