Radioisotope blood volume measurement in uncontrolled retroperitoneal haemorrhage induced by a transfemoral iliac artery puncture.

Standard-of-care, large volume crystalloid infusion, in the setting of uncontrolled bleeding, has been challenged and it is not known if fluid resuscitation increases retroperitoneal hemorrhage. We developed an experimental model of retroperitoneal haemorrhage to correlate haemodynamic and metabolic alterations with the blood volume loss. Anaesthetised, spontaneously breathing dogs (17.1+/-0.56 kg) were randomised to unilateral (UL, n=11) or bilateral (BL, n=11) iliac artery puncture, using a metallic device introduced through the femoral arteries and followed for 120 min. Initial and final bl

Blood and extracellular fluid volume in patients with Bartter's syndrome.

Blood and extracellular fluid volumes were measured in four adult patients with Bartter's syndrome and compared with those of 21 healthy control subjects. Extracellular fluid volumes were significantly lower than in the control group (-7%), whereas blood volumes were within the normal range. Consequently, the ratio of blood volume to interstitial fluid volume was significantly elevated (0.42 v normal 0.35). The results are consistent with the concept that a tubular reabsorption defect is present in Bartter's syndrome.

Quantitative T2 in the occipital lobe: the role of the CPMG refocusing rate.

PURPOSE: To investigate the dependence of occipital gray and white matter T(2) on the Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) refocusing interval, thereby testing the basis of a novel functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) method for blood volume quantification, and addressing recent questions surrounding T(2) contrast in the occipital lobe. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A CPMG sequence with 1 x 1 x 5 mm(3) resolution was used to quantify T(2) in a single axial slice at the midlevel of the occipital lobe in 23 healthy adult volunteers. Refocusing intervals of 8, 11, and 22 msec were compared. A Bayes

Comparison of blood volume biofeedback hemodialysis and conventional hemodialysis on cardiovascular stability and blood pressure control in hemodialysis patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Despite the improvements in hemodialysis (HD) technology, 20-30% of sessions are still complicated by hypotension or hypotension-related symptoms. Biofeedback systems have proven to reduce the occurrence of such events, but no conclusive findings can lead to wider adoption of these systems. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials to establish whether the use of blood volume tracking systems compared to conventional hemodialysis (C-HD) reduces the occurrence of intradialytic hypotension. METHODS: The PRISMA guidelines were used to carry o
