New skeletal material sheds light on the palaeobiology of the Pleistocene marsupial carnivore, Thylacoleo carnifex.

The extinct marsupial 'lion' Thylacoleo carnifex was Australia's largest mammalian carnivore. Despite being the topic of more discussion than any other extinct Australian marsupial (excepting perhaps the Thylacine), basic aspects of its palaeobiology, including its locomotory repertoire, remain poorly understood. Recent discoveries allowed the first reconstruction of an entire skeleton including the first complete tail and hitherto-unrecognised clavicles. Here we describe these elements and re-assess the biomechanics of the postcranial skeleton via comparisons with a range of extant terrestria

"The quiet necrosis": An early medieval case of multifocal juvenile osteochondritis dissecans of the knee.

BACKGROUND: osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is an ancient disease with few well-described cases in paleopathological records. Here, we report a very rare case of OCD on both lateral femoral condyles and on the lateral condyle of the right tibia in an early medieval human skeleton. METHODS: macroscopic examination of the bone vestiges of a young male unearthed from a 6th-8th Lombard cemetery in the northeast Italy was perform. RESULTS: We observed a circular crater-like depression with well-defined smooth margins and exposure of the trabecular bone on both lateral femoral condyles and in the

Skeletal Indicators of Shark Feeding on Human Remains: Evidence from Florida Forensic Anthropology Cases.

This research examines a series of six Florida forensic anthropology cases that exhibit taphonomic evidence of marine deposition and shark-feeding activities. In each case, we analyzed patterns of trauma/damage on the skeletal remains (e.g., sharp-force bone gouges and punctures) and possible mechanisms by which they were inflicted during shark predation/scavenging. In some cases, shark teeth were embedded in the remains; in the absence of this evidence, we measured interdental distance from defects in the bone to estimate shark body length, as well as to draw inferences about the potential sp

Morphology of immature stages of blow fly, Lucilia sinensis Aubertin (Diptera: Calliphoridae), a potential species of forensic importance.

Lucilia sinensis Aubertin (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is a blow fly species of potential forensic importance since adults are attracted to, and colonize, decomposing vertebrate remains. Blow fly larvae associated with human corpses can be useful evidence in forensic investigations; however, their use is dependent in most cases on proper species identification and availability of developmental data. For identification, morphological information on each life stage is traditionally used. We used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine the ultrastructure of eggs, all instars, and puparia, of L.

A quantitative comparison analysis of diatoms in the lung tissues and the drowning medium as an indicator of drowning.

The presence of diatoms in the lung tissues, internal organs and bone marrow is considered as the supportive evidence in the diagnosis of death by drowning. Generally, the diatoms detected in the lung tissues are regarded as insignificant since these diatoms can be detected in the lung tissues of the postmortem immersion bodies. In this study, we analyzed the relationships between the numbers of the diatoms in the lung tissues and the drowning medium. We made a comparison analysis between the diatoms in the lung tissues and the drowning medium using the ratio of diatom numbers in both samples

The great variety of rodent taphonomy: A series of case studies.

Rodents as postmortem taphonomic agents in the forensic context can affect various analyses such as trauma interpretation, identification, or the recovery rate. While carnivore scavenging has been studied extensively due to its destructive nature, the potential of rodents to alter human remains is comparatively underrepresented in the literature, despite common involvement. We present thirteen cases of rodent taphonomy including exposed, buried and indoor-located remains. The rodents in these cases scavenged on soft and hard tissue, dispersed skeletal elements or associated objects, and/or use

Semi-quantitative analysis of tramadol, dextromethorphan, and metabolites in decomposed skeletal tissues by ultra performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry.

The use of filtration/pass-through extraction (FPTE) and ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-qTOF-MS) to detect tramadol (TRAM), dextromethorphan (DXM), and metabolites from skeletal remains is described. Rats (n=5) received 50 mg/kg tramadol and were euthanized by CO2 asphyxiation approximately 30 minutes post-dose. Rats (n=4) received 75 mg/kg dextromethorphan and were euthanized by CO2 asphyxiation approximately 45 minutes post-dose. Remains decomposed to skeleton outdoors and vertebral bones were collected. Bones were cleaned, dried, an

Jasenovac.

Jasenovac was a camp run by the Ustaše Supervisory Service (UNS) of the Independent State of Croatia during World War II. It was located approximately 100 km south-east of Zagreb on the banks of the Sava River. Although the purpose of, and number of deaths in, the camp have been debated, it appears that a significant number of Serbs, Roma and Jews died and/or were executed at this site between 1941 and 1945. The site demonstrates that not all detention camps at this time were controlled by the German government and that cultural/religious groups other than the Jews were detainees. Balkan mass

Microbial Signatures of Cadaver Gravesoil During Decomposition.

Genomic studies have estimated there are approximately 10(3)-10(6) bacterial species per gram of soil. The microbial species found in soil associated with decomposing human remains (gravesoil) have been investigated and recognized as potential molecular determinants for estimates of time since death. The nascent era of high-throughput amplicon sequencing of the conserved 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene region of gravesoil microbes is allowing research to expand beyond more subjective empirical methods used in forensic microbiology. The goal of the present study was to evaluate microbial communit

Preserved human remains from Militello Rosmarino (Sicily, 18th19th centuries AD): assessing the microbial status of a late modern Italian mummy assemblage.

Human mummies are an invaluable resource for bioarchaeology, providing insights into past diseases, behaviors, and funerary practices. However, their long-term preservation poses challenges, particularly when displayed publicly or stored in uncontrolled environments. This study seeks to assess the condition of an assemblage of spontaneously mummified religious dignitaries from Sicily, located in the recently reopened crypt of the mother church of Militello Rosmarino (province of Messina, Italy). Within the framework of the Sicily Mummy Project, we used the microbial community present on the re

The contribution of seawater in DNA degradation: Comparison of genetic results from skeletal remains affected by different taphonomic conditions in forensic contexts.

In the field of forensic genetics, the examination of compromised biological samples is a common investigative challenge. It is crucial to thoroughly assess the thanatological and taphonomic events affecting human samples for genetic analysis, including the environment surrounding the corpses or the skeletal remains, which, in the present cases, is represented by seawater. This study aims to compare different conditions to determine the extent to which cadaveric submersion in seawater affects endogenous DNA, by evaluating the degree of degradation and nucleic acid quantity. The samples selecte

Autopsy doesn't always tell all: The importance of exhuming skeletal remains of cemetery unidentified decedents.

The process of personal identification differs according to the state of preservation of the corpse, becoming more complicated when dealing with remains altered by taphonomic variables. Since 2015, the staff of the Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology and Odontology (LABANOF) of the University of Milan has been engaged in recovering the skeletons of 36 unknown people from the cemeteries of the city of Milan, to redraw their biological profiles and give them back the possibility of being identified. Of the 36 starting skeletons, 7 have been identified and therefore are not the object of this stu

Age estimation based on the metamorphosis of the clavicle end: A test of Falys and Prangle method in two contemporary samples.

Upon finding skeletal unidentified remains, four are the questions that must be answered: age, sex, ancestry, and stature. Regarding age estimation, clavicle has received special attention because medial epiphysis is the last epiphysis, among long bones that ossifies. Falys and Prangle proposed a method of age estimation based on three degenerative characteristics-surface topography (TOP), Porosity (POR) and Osteophyte formation (OST)-evaluated on the sternal end of the clavicle according to the descriptions and the illustrations provided in the original article producing satisfactory results.

Detecting drugs in dry bone: a pilot study of skeletal remains with a post-mortem interval over 23 years.

In decomposed or skeletonized bodies, conventional matrices used in forensic toxicology may no longer be available for analysis. The aim of this paper was to test the survival and detection of toxicological substances in dry bone samples with over 23 years of post-mortem interval. In this perspective, bone samples from the cranium, ribs, and vertebrae of seven skeletons from the CAL Milano Cemetery Skeletal Collection, buried for over 23 years, fully decomposed and altered by taphonomic factors were selected based on their ante-mortem data, which included verified or suspected drug addictions

The advantage of the virtual forensic autopsy - A new approach which could benefit forensic expertise.

We aimed to assess the accuracy and advantages of postmortem CT examination and three-dimensional (3D) view of the cadaver with the Sectra Visualization Table compared to the full conventional autopsy of a forensic suicidal case. Our survey concerned unusual case of self-strangulation where a body was found in the stage of mummification with a nylon cable tie around the neck and another around the feet. The case was initially determined as a homicide, but later reconsidered a suicide based on objective scene investigation, virtual autopsy and the positions of knots. Unlike the physical autopsy

A diachronic examination of biomechanical changes in skeletal remains from Tombos in ancient Nubia.

Using morphometric assessment, we diachronically analyse mechanical stress and limb function at the Tombos (modern Sudan) archaeological site through time and changing socioeconomic circumstances. Based on previous research, we expect that during the Third Intermediate/Napatan (c. 1070-656 BCE) people were larger and more physically active than in the New Kingdom (∼1400-1070 BCE). On the appendicular skeleton of adults 57 measurements were obtained on individuals from 67 discrete burials and 370 commingled skeletal elements. These raw measurements were analysed statistically. Individuals from
