Bone scintigraphic findings of hypophosphatemic osteomalacia associated with adefovir therapy: involvement of lower extremity skeletons.

Occurrence of hypophosphatemic osteomalacia (HO) induced by administration of low-dose adefovir therapy is rare, and bone scintigraphy of the disease has rarely been reported. We report on bone scintigraphic findings in patients with HO. Multiple uptakes in ribs, spines, and lower extremities, suggesting multiple fractures, were observed on bone scintigraphy. Patients were diagnosed as HO associated with adefovir therapy. Owing to the same predilection sites, multiple uptakes on the axial skeleton can cause confusion with malignant metastatic disease; however, involvement of lower extremity sk

Outcome comparison in traumatic lower-extremity reconstruction by using various composite vascularized bone transplantation.

Lower-extremity injury may present as a composite soft-tissue and bone defect, resulting directly from trauma or subsequent debridements. These composite defects often require vascularized osteocutaneous flaps for an effective, staged reconstruction. Among various donor sites, the vascularized fibular flap is generally considered the best option because of its inherent advantages. However, when the fibular flap is not available, iliac and rib flaps become the alternative choices. The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the functional results of the alternatively chosen bone flap

Bone mineral content of the lumbar spine and lower extremities years after spinal cord lesion.

Bone mineral content (BMC) was measured by dual photon absorptiometry in the lumbar spine, femoral neck and shaft, and proximal tibia in 26 individuals with spinal cord lesions sustained 2 to 25 years previously. In average BMC of the lumbar spine was within the range of normal values. BMC of the femoral neck and shaft was in average 25% lower than the normal values, and for the proximal tibia more than 50% lower than the normal value. Participants with cervical lesions had lower BMC values in the femoral bones than those with thoracic lesions. Neither presence of spasticity nor daily use of l

[Treatment procedure with the middle-aged and elderly having fractures of the long tubular bones of the lower extremities].

The experience with the treatment of 202 patients older than 60 with fractures of long tubular bones of lower extremities is generalized. The operative intervention was fulfilled in 83 patients (41,1%), conservative treatment was conducted in 119 patients (58,9%). The problems of treatment of concomitant diseases and prophylaxis of complications are analyzed. Extra-articular osteosynthesis with the application of orientators and directing wires was performed in fractures of the femoral neck, the nail being driven in without decortication in the subtrochanterial area. The methods of treatment a

Autologous bone marrow-derived stem cells for chronic wounds of the lower extremity: a retrospective study.

Recent evidence suggests that stem cells derived from bone marrow have the potential to treat many disorders given their plasticity and ability to differentiate into various types of tissues, including skin cells. Stem cells are known to participate in cell migration and proliferation, contributing to the repair and regeneration of injured tissue, as observed in chronic wounds. This retrospective review of patients treated with autologous bone marrow aspirate (BMA) was performed to determine whether the treatment will help heal lower extremity ulcers by expediting wound closure and reducin

Prognostic significance of lower extremity long bone fractures after automobile versus pedestrian injuries.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the tibia and femur are common after automobile versus pedestrian (AVP) injuries. This study evaluates the effect of age on the type of fracture and the incidence and type of associated injuries. METHODS: All patients involved in an AVP crash from January 1, 1995, through June 30, 2006, were included in the study. Variables obtained from our trauma registry included age, gender, Injury Severity Score, Abbreviated Injury Scale, intra-abdominal and spine injuries, and mortality. Patients were divided into three age groups for analysis: younger than 15 years, 15 years to

Magnetic Intramedullary Lengthening Nails for Complex Lower Extremity Reconstruction: Functional Outcomes, Bone Healing, and Complications.

Background: Magnetically controlled intramedullary lengthening nails have become increasingly popular for lower extremity reconstruction because they reduce complications associated with external fixation and facilitate earlier rehabilitation. However, comprehensive data integrating deformity correction, bone healing, functional recovery, psychosocial outcomes, and complication-related analyses remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the radiological, functional, psychosocial, and complication-related outcomes of magnetic intramedullary lengthening nails in patients undergoing complex low

Hounsfield Unit-Calculated Bone Mineral Density Loss Following Combat-Related Lower Extremity Amputations.

BACKGROUND: After combat-related lower extremity amputations, patients rapidly lose bone mineral density (BMD). As serial dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans are rarely performed in this setting, it is difficult to determine the timeline for bone loss and recovery or the role of interventions. However, a strong correlation has been demonstrated between DXA BMD and computed tomography (CT) signal attenuation. We sought to leverage multiple CT scans obtained after trauma to develop a predictive model for BMD after combat-related lower extremity amputations. METHODS: We reviewed amputations pe

Blood Flow Restriction Therapy Preserves Lower Extremity Bone and Muscle Mass After ACL Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Muscle atrophy is common after an injury to the knee and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Blood flow restriction therapy (BFR) combined with low-load resistance exercise may help mitigate muscle loss and improve the overall condition of the lower extremity (LE). PURPOSE: To determine whether BFR decreases the loss of LE lean mass (LM), bone mass, and bone mineral density (BMD) while improving function compared with standard rehabilitation after ACLR. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled clinical trial. METHODS: A total of 32 patients undergoing ACLR with bone-pat

Prevalence of benign bone lesions of the lower extremity in the pediatric spinal disorders: a whole-body imaging study.

There is a paucity of knowledge about benign bone lesions. The advances in imaging methods can screen bone lesions incidentally, and missing information can be provided. The aim of the study is to collect information about the prevalence and natural history of benign bone lesions with the use of whole-body biplanar slot-scanning imaging (EOS). EOS images acquired between 2015 and 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Anatomical locations of lesions, number of lesions with polyostotic involvement and radiographic features of each were recorded. Fibrous lesions were further categorized according t

Assessing the Necessity for the "Joint Above and Below" Radiography Approach for Lower-extremity Long Bone Fractures in Children.

OBJECTIVES: A common strategy for evaluation of extremity fractures is the "joint above and below" (JAB) radiograph approach, which includes dedicated imaging of the joint proximal and distal to a fracture independent of clinical suspicion for an injury involving the joint. The incidence of concomitant ipsilateral lower-extremity fractures or dislocations associated with lower-extremity long bone fractures in children has not been commonly reported and represents an evidential gap for determining a radiograph approach. Our purpose was to determine the frequency of and risk factors for concomit
