Refining the locus of branchio-otic syndrome 2 (BOS2) to a 5.25 Mb locus on chromosome 1q31.3q32.1.

In 1991, a large family was described with an autosomal dominant inheritance of otological and branchial manifestations which was termed branchio-otic syndrome type 2 (BOS2). This trait was mapped by linkage analysis in this family to a region of 23-31 Mb on chromosome 1q25.1q32.1. In the present report we describe the clinical features of two patients with a deletion in this region: one patient has a deletion but no otological or branchial manifestations, the other patient manifests mild conductive hearing loss resulting from bilaterally malformed middle ear ossicles, as well as a preauricula

Dental structure and tooth attachment modes in the common fangtooth Anoplogaster cornuta (Valenciennes, 1833) (Actinopterygii; Trachichthyiformes; Anoplogastridae).

We studied the structure and attachment modes of the teeth of adult Anoplogaster cornuta using light- and scanning-electron microscopic techniques. All teeth were monocuspid, composed solely of orthodentin, and lacked a covering enameloid cap. Fourteen teeth were present in the oral jaws, with three teeth each on the left and right premaxilla and four teeth each on the left and right dentary. The anteriormost premaxillary and dentary teeth were considerably larger than the more posteriorly located ones. The oral jaw teeth were transparent, non-depressible and firmly ankylosed to their respecti

Management of Nasopharyngeal Cyst of Second Branchial Cleft Origin: Case Series and Systematic Review.

Branchial cyst of the second pouch is the most common lesion of the nasopharyngeal lateral wall, generally localized between the pharyngeal wall and internal carotid artery. Cases consistent with such lesion, were collected. Symptomatic patients were treated with endoscopic trans-nasal marsupialisation, asymptomatic cases were followed-up. Among the 10 patients included, 4 were symptomatic and accordingly treated. In the literature, 36 cases were found, all of which were treated, most commonly with a total excision. Considering the benign nature of branchial nasopharyngeal cyst, its treatment

[One case of postoperative facial paralysis after first branchial fistula].

Pus overflow from patent's fistula belew the left face near mandibular angle 2 years agowith a little pain. Symptoms relieved after oral antibiotics. This symptom frequently occurred in the past six months. Postoperative facial paralysis occurred after surgery, and recovered after treatment. It was diagnosed as the postoperative facial paralysis after first branchial fistula surgery.

Unusual neck sinus--first or second cleft?

A sinus tract presenting with an opening around the angle of mandible is suggestive of first cleft remnant. We present the case of a 4-year-old boy with a recurrent discharging sinus around the angle of the right mandible whose internal opening was near the tonsil on imaging. Complete excision was performed with facial nerve monitoring. We discuss technical aspects of the surgery and possible embryology.

Morphometric study on the characteristic external features of normal and abnormal human embryos.

The embryonic period is characterized by organogenesis and accompanying dynamic changes in external features. The measurement of human embryos has been limited to whole body dimensions, such as crown-rump length. More detailed measurements would add quantitative information about these characteristic events and provide a better understanding of normal and abnormal embryonic development. In the present study, we defined axes, landmarks, and measurements for human embryos, and measured 250 externally normal human embryos at Carnegie stages 14-23 (6.5-29.3 mm in crown-rump length, approximately 5

First branchial cleft anomaly presenting as a recurrent post-auricular abscess.

Embryological anomalies of the first branchial cleft are uncommonly encountered. They usually present as cysts, swellings, or fistulas in the pre-auricular or post-auricular area or high in the neck, which may become infected. Failure to recognise these unusual cases may result in misdiagnosis, inadequate treatment, and subsequent recurrence. Further definitive surgery may thus be complicated. A case is reported of a patient who attended accident and emergency on three occasions with an infected post-auricular cyst, which was treated by incision and drainage. It was subsequently found to be a

Pyriform sinus fistula.

Pyriform sinus fistulae/sinuses are rare causes of recurrent cervical abscess, especially on the left side. They can also present as acute thyroiditis. Treatment in the form of simple incision and drainage is invariably unsuccessful, and the entity may be confused with the residual tract of a second branchial arch anomaly. We report a case of pyriform sinus fistula, and believe that this is only the second case report in India. We feel that greater awareness can lead to proper and appropriate diagnosis of this anomaly.

[Apropos of a rare craniofacial abnormality of the 1st branchial arch].

The authors report a case of a rare first branchial cranio facial malformation, combined with a posterieur maxilla cleft, and macrostomia. The authors insist on the clinical aspect, and the difficult classification of this malformations.

Anatomical considerations in the repair of macrostomia.

Macrostomia is a deformity that occurs alone or in combination with other anomalies as a result of a failure of merging of the maxillary and mandibular processes of the first branchial arch. In an attempt to restore normal anatomy, a repair has been designed that includes provision of a lighter shade, rounded, nonrugated vermilion surface for the new oral commissure. The muscular ring is also reconstructed, and a Z-plasty is incorporated into the skin closure. In the patient described, an interesting band of fibrotic tissue was identified in the cleft, connecting the upper and lower orbiculari

First branchial cleft anomaly.

A 15-year-old girl presented with a cystic swelling since birth behind the ramus of the right mandible and diagnosed clinically as a dermoid cyst. Surgical exploration, however, showed that it was closely related to the external auditory canal, with an extension running medially behind the parotid gland and ending in the bony middle ear. The facial nerve was closely related to the deep part of the cyst. Such an anatomical position indicates that this was a first branchial cleft anomaly. Surgical excision of the cyst was performed.
