X-ray absorption spectra of a number of organic iodine and bromine compounds of biological relevance, as well as of a series of iodine compounds with different oxidation states, have been measured. The iodine K-edge spectra (XANES) are found to be relatively featureless but the position of the edge is found to be sensitive to formal valence (among other factors), and the edge shape to the number of bound O atoms. The mechanisms of radical-mediated addition of hydrogen bromide to an alkene and of allylic bromination rely on a balance between competing addition and hydrogen abstraction by the bromine radical. Dinuclear aluminum-based triple-stranded helicates were functionalized through postsynthetic bromination with N-bromosuccinimide, enabling direct modification of a preassembled helical framework. Two brominated sesquiterpenes, majapolene B (1) and acetylmajapolene B (2), isolated from the red algal genus Laurencia were investigated using vibrational circular dichroism (VCD). In experiments with rats, we have found that at enhanced intake of bromide, bromine does not replace chlorine in the thyroid; it replaces iodine. Under our experimental conditions, more than one-third of the iodine content in the thyroid was replaced by bromine.
