Bronchogenic cyst of the tongue in an infant.

Bronchogenic cyst of the tongue is rare. We report the case of a 17-month baby who has a lingual lesion. MRI shows a well-defined cystic lesion. Treatment consisted of a complete resection and histology found a pseudostratified respiratory type epithelium. Only 10 pediatric cases of bronchogenic cyst of the tongue have been reported in the literature. MRI is the imaging modality of choice and treatment is always surgical. The final diagnosis is made by histology.

Intramural esophageal bronchogenic cysts.

Bronchogenic cysts are most frequently located in the middle mediastinum near the carina. Esophageal bronchogenic cysts are extremely rare. An intramural esophageal bronchogenic cyst was successfully resected from a 51-year-old man.

[Bronchogenic cyst of the tongue in an adult].

INTRODUCTION: Choristoma are non-malignant embryonic tumors, defined by ectopic tissues different from the organ on which they develop. The bronchogenic cyst is a choristoma affecting the upper aero digestive tract. It is lined with respiratory epithelium. The tongue is a rare localization for choristoma. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 22-year old male patient who consulted in maxillofacial surgery for painful macroglossia. Imaging revealed a median lesion, suggesting an abscessed embryonic tumor. Pathologic examination after surgical exeresis confirmed the diagnosis of lingual choristo…

Bronchogenic cysts of the neck in adults.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital sacs that result from maldevelopment of the primitive foregut. Although they occur predominantly in the chest, there are reports of lesions in extrathoracic locations. The majority of reported bronchogenic cysts located in the neck are found in the pediatric population; a review of the literature reveals few reports of bronchogenic cysts of the neck among adults. The diagnosis of a bronchogenic cyst relies on the histology and location of the lesion. Here, we review our experience in the diagnosis and management of 2 adult patients with pathologically proven b…

[Bronchogenic cysts: Radiologic findings].

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital anomalies that result from abnormal budding of the tracheobronchial tree. They are usually found in the mediastinum around the tracheobronchial tree or in the lung parenchyma. Although they can occur in infants and children, they are frequently detected coincidentally in the third and fourth decades. Their radiological findings can change according to their locations. In this pictorial assay we reviewed the radiological appearance of bronchogenic cysts with different imaging modalities.

[Bronchogenic cysts of the mediastinum in childhood].

Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital anomalies result of abnormal development of the tracheobronchial tree. They develop in the lung parenchyma or in the mediastinum. For a period of 17 years (1975-1991) a total of 46 children with bronchogenic cysts have been treated; in 6 the cysts were localized in the mediastinum. Two patients were one-year-old, 3 were in the age group 1 to 3 years and 1 was older than 3 years. Four patients were boys and 2 girls. Two children had hacking cough and attacks of dyspnea; one had swallowing difficulties. In 3 children the disease produced no symptoms and was…

[Pulmonary and mediastinal bronchogenic cysts].

Bronchogenic cysts are relatively rare anomalies with a congenital origin resulting in an abnormal branching of the tracheo-bronchial tree. They either develop in the pulmonary parenchyma or in the mediastinal region. Between 1975 and 1987, 21 cases of bronchogenic cysts were operated upon. Eighteen of these cysts had a pulmonary localisation and 3 were mediastinal. Only 8 of these were diagnosed pre-operatively by bronchoscopy. The major reason for delay in diagnosis is persistent or recurrent pulmonary infection. Eight cases were treated by cystectomy, 4 by simple wedge resection, 4 by segme…

[Bronchogenic cysts of the upper mediastinum].

A case report of a congenital bronchogenic cyst in the upper mediastinum on the level of the thoracic aperture, which very likely communicates with the oesophagus, is presented. The embryogenesis, aetiopathogeny, diagnostics, location and histological structure of this rare case are discussed.

Robotic resection of a bronchogenic cyst.

We present the case of the robotic resection of a bronchogenic cyst in a 25-year-old man. The mass, which was 3.5 x 2.4 x 4.4 cm, was picked up on a computed tomography scan performed after a motor vehicle accident. The mass was bordered by multiple thoracic structures like the oesophagus, pericardium, lung and airways. The cyst was first freed from its adherence to the vagus nerve. A combination of bipolar cautery and blunt dissection was used. Then, the mass was also separated from the bronchus intermedius, followed by its posterior attachment to the oesophagus and its infero-posterior attac…

An atypical presentation of bronchogenic cyst.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial cysts (BCs) can be difficult to diagnose because of non-specific site of occurrence and heterogeneous density of cyst content in some patients. We present herein a BC case with such nonspecific findings. CASE: A 23-year-old man referred to our hospital because of an abnormal chest image during a mass-screening. CT revealed a cystic nodule in the posterior mediastinum. The content of the cystic lesion was heterogeneous, measuring 30-100 Hounsfield Units, and it was surgically resected and diagnosed as a BC. CONCLUSION: Diagnosis of BC could be difficult in patients like

Cervical bronchogenic cyst in a toddler.

Bronchogenic cyst is a congenital abnormality arising from the tracheobronchial system. Localisation of such cysts in the head and neck region is rare. We report a girl in her early childhood with a painless enlarging right lateral neck mass diagnosed with a branchial cleft cyst based on clinical and radiological MRI findings. An incidental finding of a cervical bronchogenic cyst was made on the final histopathological specimen. Although rare, bronchogenic cysts should be considered as differential diagnoses for paediatric patients' lateral and midline cervical masses.

Bronchogenic cyst of the interatrial septum.

Although bronchogenic cysts are the most common primary mediastinal cysts, intracardiac bronchogenic cysts are extremely rare. We report a case of a bronchogenic cyst of the interatrial septum in a 42-year-old woman who presented with recent onset of dyspnea on exertion. Cardiac investigations including transthoracic echocardiography and computed tomography revealed a cystic homogeneous mass in the interatrial septum. The patient underwent surgical resection, and the resultant atrial septal defect was repaired using an autologous pericardial patch. Histopathological examination of the resected…

Bronchogenic cysts in retroperitoneal region.

Bronchogenic cyst is a relatively rare abnormality that develop from the accessory lung buds of the foregut. The cyst is regarded as a congenital developmental abnormality. Occurence in the retroperitoneal presentation is rare. Here, we present two patients who had an incidentally discovered retroperitoneal mass which were revealed to be bronchogenic cysts after surgical extirpation.

Intramural bronchogenic cyst of the oesophagus.

Bronchogenic cysts are relatively common mediastinal cysts. Here, we report removal of a rare paraoesophageal-type bronchogenic cyst by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in a 52-year-old male patient. The defect of the oesophageal wall was successfully reinforced with an intercostal muscle flap.

Multiple cervical bronchogenic cysts.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare, benign, congenital lesions that occur as a result of aberrant development of the tracheobronchial tree during embryogenesis. They usually present during the first decade of life and are encountered predominantly within the mediastinum or the lung parenchyma. In a few instances, they appear within the neck mimicking a neoplasm and, depending on their size and site, may also cause acute upper respiratory obstruction. We describe a case of two cervical bronchogenic cysts adjacent to the larynx in a child who presented with a hoarse voice.
