Ca(2+) channel inactivation in the neurons of the freshwater snail, Lymnaea stagnalis, was studied using patch-clamp techniques. In the presence of a high concentration of intracellular Ca(2+) buffer (5 mM EGTA), the inactivation of these Ca(2+) channels is entirely voltage dependent; it is not influenced by the identity of the permeant divalent ions or the amount of extracellular Ca(2+) influx, or reduced by higher levels of intracellular Ca(2+) buffering. Inactivation measured under these conditions, despite being independent of Ca(2+) influx, has a bell-shaped voltage dependence, which has

The food-calcium (Ca) interaction was examined in 12 healthy women (mean age 38 years) maintained on a constant metabolic diet. They underwent three phases of study, comprised of control (no Ca), Ca citrate (1 g Ca/day) during meals, and Ca citrate separately from meals. Each phase was 7 days in length and two 24-hour urine samples were collected on days 6 and 7. The rise from the control phase in urinary Ca was slightly more prominent when Ca citrate was given with meals than without (68 and 62%, respectively). The fall in urinary phosphorus was equivalent at about 25% between Ca citrate phas…

An animal model was established to test the effect of a calcium antagonist on nephrocalcinosis, which was induced by an atherogenous diet, and its effect on the excretion of calcium and other parameters relevant for stone formation. With the administration of nifedipine (Adalat), the grade of nephrocalcinosis could be significantly reduced. Furthermore, with nifedipine the excretion of calcium and sodium in the urine was raised, while phosphate and potassium levels were lowered. The excretion of magnesium and citrate, reduced by an atherogenous diet, could be raised significantly with the admi…

A finely balanced control system keeps the extracellular calcium concentration within narrow limits. Disorders of calcium metabolism are often based on altered parathormone levels. Symptoms are not always clear, sometimes they are even missing: the more it is important to know possible associated diseases. The author presents basics, current diagnostics and concrete therapy options. Central hormone for the regulation of the calcium balance is the parathyroid hormone. With decreasing calcium, PTH leads to an increase in extracellular free calcium concentration in three ways. The classic symptom…

A normal serum calcium level is 8 to 10 mg/dL. The diagnosis of hypercalcemia (ie, levels 10.5 mg/dL or greater) should be confirmed with an albumin-adjusted or ionized calcium level. The two most common causes of hypercalcemia are hyperparathyroidism and malignancy. Drugs, notably lithium and thiazide diuretics, also can cause hypercalcemia. Patients with severe or symptomatic hypercalcemia should be treated initially with hydration to decrease calcium levels. The evaluation should include a parathyroid hormone (PTH) level. If the PTH level is low, cancer is a likely cause, particularly multi…

KEY POINTS AND PRACTICAL RECOMMENDATIONS: • Calcium channel blockers, which dilate arteries by reducing calcium flux into cells, effectively lower blood pressure, especially in combination with other drugs, and some formulations of agents of this class are approved for treating angina or cardiac dysrhythmias. • Calcium channel blockers reduce blood pressure across all patient groups, regardless of sex, race/ethnicity, age, and dietary sodium intake. • Nondihydropyridine calcium channel blockers are more negatively chronotropic and inotropic than the dihydropyridine subclass, which is import…

Since the findings of Yü and Gutman [1], the hyperuricosuric calcium stone former is a unique clinical entity. While an impressive number of clinical and epidemiologic studies implicate hyperuricosuria in calcium stone formation, the exact physicochemical mechanism by which uric acid affects calcium oxalate crystallization has not been proven. Allopurinol decreases stone recurrences and is the drug of choice for patients with isolated HCN.

Calcium is present in amphibian blood at a concentration similar to that in other vertebrates, about 1-2 mmol l-1. The fraction of free calcium in amphibians is lower than that in other tetrapod vertebrates because about 50% of the plasma Ca2+ is bound to plasma proteins and perhaps other molecules. Plasma [Ca2+] varies seasonally, increasing in spring and summer and decreasing in winter. Changes in plasma [Ca2+] also occur during larval development, as the concentration of this ion increases in larval forms as they approach metamorphosis. Calcium is exchanged at a variety of sites in animals.…

Calcium channel blockers are widely used in the treatment of ischemic heart disease, hypertension, and supraventricular tachycardia. The prototype agents, verapamil, nifedipine, and diltiazem, represent three classes of calcium channel blockers, each of which has different pharmacologic effects. Nifedipine and the other dihydropyridines primarily are vasodilators and have no clinical effects on cardiac conduction or contractility. Diltiazem and verapamil also are vasodilators, but they possess, to varying degrees, negative inotropic, chronotropic, and dromotropic effects. Side effects of these…

A method for preparation of a gel for chromatography has been developed. The adsorbent is calcium tartrate treated with potassium phosphate. By changing the temperature of synthesis (10-65 degrees C) and concentration of the salts (calcium chloride and sodium potassium tartrate) from 0.3 to 3.0 M, we have been able to prepare adsorbent crystals of definite sizes in the range 35-200 microns. In all cases, for synthesis of adsorbent, the Ca2+/K+Na+ ratio was greater than 1. After treatment of calcium tartrate crystals with 0.075-1.5 M potassium phosphate at 80-100 degrees C and pH 8.5-9.0, an ap…

This study investigates the development of lipopeptide-based calcium complexes to enhance calcium bioavailability. Two distinct lipopeptide components were extracted from Bacillus mojavensis HF: a solvent-extracted lipopeptide (LP), and an extracellular lipopeptide composite (ELC), obtained through salting-out. Initial tests revealed that ELC was more negatively charged and exhibited superior efficacy in dissolving CaCO3, leading to the selection of ELC for complex preparation. Two types of ELC-based complexes were prepared using CaCO3 and CaCl2, and characterization techniques confirmed the i…

Calcium absorption and secretion can occur along the length of the small and large intestine. To date, the focus of research into intestinal calcium absorption has been the small intestine, the site contributing the majority of intestinal calcium absorption. However, evidence that the colon contributes as much as 10% of enteral calcium transport has been available for decades. Transcellular calcium absorption and bidirectional paracellular calcium flux contributing to either net absorption or secretion have been observed in the colon, depending on the physiological state. Moreover, the calcium…

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients have a high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. In addition, they exhibit mineral and bone laboratory abnormalities, bone diseases and vascular calcification, which are the component of new concept "chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder". Several organs including kidney, parathyroid, bone, and intestine regulate calcium concentration in orchestration. Parathyroid hormone, phosphate, vitamin D and uremia affect the regulation in serum calcium concentration.
