Snake venom poisoning in Southern California.

The annual incidence of rattlesnake bite in Southern California is approximately 1 per 75,000 population. The case fatality rate is 1.5 per cent. The snakes implicated in the greatest number of injuries are the southern Pacific rattlesnake, the red diamond rattlesnake and the sidewinder. Rattlesnake venom produces deleterious changes in the blood cells, defects in blood coagulation, injury to the intimal linings of vessels, damage to the heart muscle, alterations in the respiratory cycle and, to a lesser extent, changes in neuromuscular conduction. The most frequently observed symptoms and sig…

Tuberculosis control in California mental hospitals.

Diagnosis, the first step in tuberculosis control, is accomplished in the mental hospitals of California by x-ray examination of all patients annually and of new or returning patients on admission. This routine has been carried on since 1937. Tuberculous patients with active disease are segregated in one of three specially staffed and equipped units at the Patton, Sonoma and Napa hospitals. Those in whom disease is likely to recur are likewise segregated for special care and observation. Those in whom disease is inactive or not definitely diagnosed are not segregated but are observed by physic…

Cancer incidence among Armenians in California.

INTRODUCTION: California is home to the largest population of Armenians in the United States. The historical categorization of Armenians as 'White' or 'Some Other Race' in population databases has likely masked cancer incidence patterns in this population. This is the first study considering cancer incidence among Armenians in California. METHODS: We used the Armenian Surname List and birthplace information in the California Cancer Registry to identify Armenians with cancer diagnosed during 1988-2019. We calculated proportional incidence ratios (PIR) among Armenians compared with non-Hispanic…

Wastewater Surveillance for Norovirus, California, USA.

Norovirus is a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis and imposes a substantial disease burden. In California, USA, norovirus surveillance is limited. We evaluated correlations between wastewater norovirus concentrations and available public health surveillance data. Wastewater surveillance for norovirus genotype GII in California provided timely, localized, and actionable data for public health authorities.

The California Agricultural Workers Health Survey.

The California Agricultural Workers Health Survey was a statewide cross-sectional household survey of 970 hired farm laborers. Randomly selected participants residing in randomly selected dwellings were recruited in seven communities representing all of the state's agricultural regions. Participants were interviewed in their preferred language by professional staff. The response rate was 83%. The comprehensive interview included self-reported health conditions, doctor-reported health conditions, work history, workplace health conditions, field sanitation, and work-related injuries. Coccidioidomycosis in California state correctional institutions.

Coccidioidomycosis (CM) has been recognized in inmates of California State prisons since 1919, where it has been diagnosed in inmates of various correctional facilities inside and outside the known endemic areas. In recent years construction of new prisons within endemic areas has led to an increase in the number of cases of CM. In 2005 and 2006, the Pleasant Valley State Prison (PVSP) near Coalinga and Avenal State Prison (ASP) near Avenal on the western side of the San Joaquin Valley have been particularly affected. In 2005, our serologic testing yielded 150 new cases from PVSP and 30 from A…

Acute pesticide morbidity and mortality: California.

The California Pesticide Illness Surveillance Program collects, investigates, abstracts, and records reports received from physicians. A minority of the reports are received through the county health officers who are notified by physicians under a state requirement for reporting pesticide-caused conditions. Most of the cases are identified by review of workers' compensation records. All the cases identified are investigated by the agricultural commissioners of the counties where exposure occurred. The investigation reports are reviewed and abstracted by staff of the Worker Health and Safety Br…

Coordinated teamwork in California industrial rehabilitation.

This article describes a case study of an industrially produced hand injury that exemplifies the coordination and teamwork involved in vocational rehabilitation in the California Workers' Compensation system. This patient required multiple tendon and nerve transplant operations done with microsurgical techniques, hand therapy for functional and sensory retraining, job analysis, vocational evaluation, labor market survey, work-hardening experience, and an on-the-job training program to effect a successful outcome. An overview of the current status of the California Workers' Compensation system …

Black drinking practices in northern California.

The data for this research come from three independent community surveys conducted between 1979 and 1980 in the San Francisco Bay Area. All surveys followed the same sampling plan and only probability techniques were employed. Of a total of 4,150 adult respondents, 1,206 identified themselves as Blacks and are analyzed in this report. A total of 29% of the females and 16% of the males are abstainers. Frequent heavier drinkers comprise 22% of the males but only 6% of the females. Among males, heavier drinking and alcohol problems are highest among those in their thirties and, therefore, cannot

Intestinal parasites in Los Angeles, California.

Because of an apparent increase in the number of parasitic infections in Los Angeles, California, a six-month retrospective analysis of data obtained from patient stool examinations for parasitic infections in out-patient populations from two county health facilities in Los Angeles County was compared with a survey published in 1936 and 1960. A significant increase in the incidence of pathogenic intestinal protozoal parasites was found to occur in the areas surveyed. Giardia lamblia and nonpathogenic Endolimax nana occurred with the greatest frequency.

Hearing conservation: industrial aspects in California.

Impaired hearing is a serious problem. The number of persons with a significant hearing loss has been estimated to be approximately 10 per cent of the population. Hearing loss owing to exposure to noise is becoming an increasingly important disease. Although it has been recognized for more than a century, little if anything was done to prevent it until a few years ago. The initiation of hearing conservation for employees has been undertaken by many of the large companies, particularly in California. Hearing conservation includes preemployment and follow-up hearing tests, control of noise at th…
