Crossing experiments suggest a simple genetic basis of complex male self-sacrifice phenotypes in widow spiders.

Sexual cannibalism is among the most extreme outcomes of sexual conflict, and the Australian widow spider Latrodectus hasselti is well known for this behaviour. Curiously, males of L. hasselti actively facilitate cannibalism through self-sacrificial mating traits. During copulation, the male somersaults his abdomen onto the female's fangs and develops an abdominal constriction that prevents his premature death, allowing him to monopolize paternity. The closely related sister species L. katipo, however, lacks self-sacrificial mating traits. Given the close relatedness of the two species, the di…

Thymectomy in the neonatal rat.

A method for removal of the thymus in the newborn rat employing measures aimed at reducing the mortality incurred by the surgical procedure, cannibalism and infection is described in detail. Tranquilisation of the dam, sterile technique, magnification of the operative site for thymus aspiration, warming to 37 degrees C during the recovery phase, and application of pheromones to the offspring prior to their reunion with the dam, all proved important in increasing the survival rate.

Burst-swimming performance predicts the outcome of cannibalistic interactions in green poison frog larvae (Dendrobates auratus).

Whole-animal performance (e.g., swimming speed, bite force) functions as a fundamental link between organism and environment and, as such, performance characteristics are important in determining the outcomes of agonistic interactions, both interspecific and intraspecific. Cannibalism is an intraspecific agonistic interaction for which winners may be expected to exhibit superior performance in characteristics relevant to cannibalistic behavior. The larvae of the Green Poison Frog (Dendrobates auratus) exhibit cannibalistic behavior in which "fast-starts" (i.e., high velocity and acceleration f…

Causes of mortality in commercial organic layers in Denmark.

A longitudinal study investigated the courses of mortality in commercial free-range organic layer flocks in Denmark. In total, 15 organic eg … ichia coli infections in the form of septicemia were identified in all organic flocks. In addition, cannibalism and constipation contributed significantly to the mortality in some organic flocks. In the confined deep litter flocks, E. coli infection, constipation, and cannibalism represented the most common causes of mortality.

[Suckling mortality in fattening rabbits in Switzerland].

The aims of this project were to determine mortality rate and aetiology of losses in suckling rabbits during the first 14 days of life. Post-mortem examinations were done on 1096 siblings from 8 conventional farms. Mortality rates varied from 0 to 17.0%. Main death causes were non-infectious and included stillbirth (13.9%), weakness due to reduced birth weight (3.0%), starvation (11.6%), runting (11.6%), cannibalism (0.5%) and scattering (7.9%). The last four causes mainly attributed to insufficient nursing by the doe. Only 21.8% of the losses were of infectious aetiology.

Importance of noradrenergic mechanisms in the olfactory bulbs for the maternal behaviour of mice.

Both olfactory recognition and maternal experience are important determinants of successful maternal care. Lesions to the central noradrenergic projection to the olfactory bulbs prior to parturition results in cannibalism without producing a general anosmia or gross imparment of maternal behavior. Similar lesions made after parturition and maternal experience are completely without effect. We interpret these findings as providing further evidence for a noradrenergic influence on bulbar networks at parturition which are important for, and have long lasting consequences on, maternal recognition.

Trichinella britovi in foxes in The Netherlands.

An overall prevalence of 3.9% of Trichinella infection was observed in the fox population in The Netherlands. Random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis of individual muscle larvae demonstrated the presence of Trichinella britovi. This is the first report of T. britovi, etiological agent of sylvatic trichinellosis, in one of the most densely populated countries in Europe and, consequently, the occurrence of cannibalism and scavenger behavior of foxes in areas with a high human population density. The presence of T. britovi in the fox population in these areas appears to be without consequences …

[Kuru].

Kuru, the progressive and fatal neurologic disorder which occurred exclusively among natives of the New Guinea Highlands, were reviewed. Early history of kuru investigation, epidemiology, clinical findings, pathological findings, successful transmission with chimpanzees, from unconventional virus to prion hypothesis and the similarities to "variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease" were discussed in the literature. Although the incidence of kuru has markedly declined with the suppression of cannibalism, it is important from a historical perspective because it was the first human transmissible prio…

Kuru and "new variant" CJD.

Acquired transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in humans include Kuru (a disease which was associated with ritualistic cannibalism in Papua New Guinea), iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and a newly recognized variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD). Clinical and neuropathological features of nvCJD are reminiscent of Kuru: early and progressive cerebellar ataxia and numerous characteristic Kuru-type amyloid plaques surrounded by spongiform change. In contrast to typical cases of sporadic CJD, Kuru and nvCJD affect young patients. The newly recognized form of CJD has been ident…

Control of Hymenolepis nana infection as a measure to improve mouse colony welfare.

After cannibalism had appeared in the reproductive units of a white mouse colony, treatment against confirmed Hymenolepis nana, a tapeworm with zoonotic potential, was performed on 67 mice in the reproductive and nursery units. Faecal droppings were evaluated by flotation and sedimentation methods. The sedimentation method revealed a higher number of positive results before, during and after the treatment, but the flotation method yielded some additional positive cases. In the reproductive unit, H. nana eggs were confirmed in 50% of the tested mice by the flotation and in 70% by the sedimentat…

Targeting autophagy in neurodegenerative diseases: From molecular mechanisms to clinical therapeutics.

Many neurodegenerative diseases are associated with pathological aggregation of proteins in neurons. Autophagy is a natural self-cannibalization process that can act as a powerful mechanism to remove aged and damaged organelles as well as protein aggregates. It has been shown that promoting autophagy can attenuate or delay neurodegeneration by removing protein aggregates. In this paper, we will review the role of autophagy in Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's Disease (PD), and Huntington's Disease (HD) and discuss opportunities and challenges of targeting autophagy as a potential therapeut

Review. The changing face of kuru: a personal perspective.

The epidemic of kuru is now known to have been transmitted among the Fore by ritual consumption of infected organs from deceased relatives. As cannibalism was suppressed by government patrol officers during the 1950s, most transmission had ceased by 1957, when the kuru research programme first commenced. As predicted in the 1960s, the epidemic has waned, with progressive ageing of kuru-affected cohorts over the years to 2007. The few cases seen in the twenty-first century, with the longest incubation periods, were almost certainly exposed as children prior to 1960. Although the research progra…

Venereal and cannibalistic ways of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato exchange between males and females of Ixodes persulcatus (Ixodidae, Acarina).

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s. l.) infection rate in Ixodes persulcatus Shulze maintained in different relative humidity gradient in male and female pairs and separately by sex were compared. Ticks collected in the St. Petersburg Region of Russia during 1992-1994 temperate and 1995 hot seasons. We observed that the infection rate among specimens maintained as sexual pairs were 1.2-2.5 times higher than among ticks maintained separately. Rate of borrelia infection in tick couples was a bit higher among specimens collected within a hot spring-summer period than among ticks collected during

Kuru: the old epidemic in a new mirror.

The kuru epidemic lasted almost a century; it started in 1901-1902, reached epidemic proportions in the mid-1950s, and disappeared in the 1990s. Kuru is the prototype member of a group of disorders known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) or prion diseases. Recent data on the genetics and pathogenesis of TSEs contribute to a better understanding of the documented kuru phenomena, and vice versa, observations made during the kuru epidemic are immensely helpful in understanding the epidemic of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease that is currently developing in Europe. The major goa

Epigenetic Control of Autophagy Related Genes Transcription in Pulpitis via JMJD3.

Autophagy is an intracellular self-cannibalization process delivering cytoplasmic components to lysosomes for digestion. Autophagy has been reported to be involved in pulpitis, but the regulation of autophagy during pulpitis progression is largely unknown. To figure out the epigenetic regulation of autophagy during pulpitis, we screened several groups of histone methyltransferases and demethylases in response to TNFα treatment. It was found JMJD3, a histone demethylase reducing di- and tri-methylation of H3K27, regulated the expression of several key autophagy genes via demethylation of H3K27m
