DNA hydrogels have received considerable attention in analytical science, however, some limitations still exist in the applications of intelligent hydrogels. In this paper, we describe a way to prepare gel film in a capillary tube based on the thermal reversible principle of DNA hydrogel and the principle of capillary action. A commercially available system of caesium iodide crystal mini-detectors (Oakfield Instruments, Oxon, UK) was modified so that it was suitable for dual isotopic measurement of the plasma protein accumulation index (PPA)- a measure of pulmonary endothelial permeability. Using this modified system the mean PPA x 10(-3) min-1 +/- (S.E.M.) recorded in 11 normal subjects (22 lungs) was 0.18 (0.08) and in 6 patients (9 lungs) with the adult respiratory distress syndrome was 2.88 (0.63) (P less than 0.02). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate extracellular water (ECW) in the recumbent and the upright position, in overweight and lean women with swelling syndrome, and to correlate the excess in ECW with an increase in capillary filtration of albumin (CFA).
PATIENTS: Fifty-one women with a swelling syndrome were investigated, 26 of whom were overweight.
MEASUREMENTS: ECW was measured by the bioelectrical impedance method, in the recumbent position and again after a postural test which consisted of walking around for 30 min. CFA was studied by an isotopic test using 99m technetium-labelled albumin.

Inflammatory mediators have a role in the formation of cerebral oedema and there is evidence that cGMP is an important signal in vascular permeability increase. We studied the effect of tranilast on the growth of carrageenin-induced granulation and the increase in capillary permeability induced by inflammatory agents in rats. In the carrageenin-induced granulation model, tranilast (50 or 100-200 mg/kg, p.o.) decreased significantly and dose-dependently the weight and the hydroxyproline content of the granulation tissue. In order to identify the effects of x-irradiation on spinal cord histology and capillary permeability, we irradiated the upper thoracic spinal cord of adult rats with 3500 cGy to a single lateral field. After 165 +/- 14 (SD) days the rats became paraplegic over 4 to 8 days. Quantitative autoradiography using 14C-amino-isobutyric acid demonstrated a biphasic curve of regional capillary permeability changes (K1). The concentrations of C3a des Arg were measured in bronchoalveolar fluid (BAL) and plasma from 12 patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Compared with 32 controls, all patients had increased BAL fluid levels (p less than .001), and nine of 12 had increased plasma levels (p less than .001) of this split product from the third complement component. Reduced total hemolytic activity (CH50) in serum was seen in five patients (p less than .01). The transcapillary escape rate and plasma clearance rate of albumin were studied in five rhesus monkeys infected with Plasmodium knowlesi in comparison with six control monkeys by using 125I-HSA as a tracer.
