[A CASE OF CARCINOSARCOMA OF THE RETROPERITONEUM: A CASE REPORT].

We present a case of retroperitoneal carcinosarcoma. A 48-year-old woman with left-sided abdominal pain and a 15 cm tumor in the lower left renal retroperitoneal region on computed tomography (CT) was referred to our hospital. Contrast-enhanced CT showed a well-defined tumor with contrast effect on the retroperitoneum. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a heterogeneous cystic mass and well-enhanced mural nodules in the tumor on T2-weighted images. Her levels of serum CA-125 and CA-19-9 were high at 44.7 and 143.0 U/mL, respectively. Although she was diagnosed with primary retroperit…

Abdominotransanal resection of a strangulated rectal carcinosarcoma.

This is a case of a 75-year-old man who presented with a 7-month history of a reducible rectal mass. The patient came to the emergency department with a prolapsed necrotic bowel involving a strangulated segment with the rectal mass. He underwent an abdominotransanal resection through a combined abdominal and perineal approach. His postoperative course was unremarkable. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies showed a rectal carcinosarcoma. Because of a state-mandated lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the patient failed to follow-up. He was later seen to have metastatic progressi…

A rare case of invasive sinonasal carcinosarcoma.

INTRODUCTION: Carcinosarcomas are rare malignant neoplasms formed by embryonic tissues (ectoderm and mesoderm) and present remarkably aggressive character with unfavourable prognosis. These lesions are rarely diagnosed in the sinonasal cavity and only a few cases are reported in the literature. This manuscript aimed to report a rare case of a large and aggressive sinonasal carcinosarcoma that involved the facial middle third and to discuss the proposed treatment. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 54-year-old female patient sought treatment for a large swelling on the left side of the face. A CT-scan re…

[Three cases of head and neck carcinosarcoma].

Summary Head and neck carcinosarcoma leads to kinds of manifestations because of different original tumor sites, such as hoarseness and dyspnea in larynx, pharyngalgia and dysphagia in pharynx and compression in neck. Imaging examinations show specific occupying tumor sites and sometimes discover peripheral invasion. Pathological examination reveals both malignant squamous epithelium and interstitial tissue in these tumors, and therefore we diagnose these tumors as carcinosarcoma.

[A Case of Carcinosarcoma of the Esophagus Treated with Chemoradiotherapy].

Carcinosarcoma of the esophagus is a rare malignant neoplasm. We report a case of an 87-year-old man treated with chemoradiotherapy. The main presenting complaint was hiccups. Histological analysis of a biopsy from the tumor demonstrated a carcinosarcoma. The clinical diagnosis was T2N0M0, cStageⅡ. In consideration of his advanced age, a past history of cerebral infarction, high blood pressure, aortic valve sclerosis, and chronic renal failure (Cr 1.5-1.8 mg/dL), chemoradiotherapy consisting of TS-1 40 mg/day with radiotherapy of 66 Gy was administered to the patient. The carcinosarcoma decrea…

Cutaneous carcinosarcoma with metastasis to the parotid gland.

Cutaneous carcinosarcoma is a rare malignancy that exhibits both mesenchymal and epithelial components. It is similar to nonmelanoma skin cancers in terms of risk and prognostic factors. However, these malignancies are known to have a propensity for local recurrence and metastasis, even with adequate resection margins. Here we report a case of metastatic cutaneous carcinosarcoma to the parotid gland and review the relevant literature.

Uterine carcinosarcoma in a patient with didelphys uterus.

Background. Didelphys uterus is a noncommon finding in women. Till now, few cases with benign mesenchymal tumors in patients with didelphys uterus are described. We present a case of a patient with carcinosarcoma arising in a didelphys uterus. Case. A 73-year-old patient presented with profuse watery postmenopausal bleeding. On examination under anesthesia, left and right cervixes were identified. Tumor extended from the left cervix into the lower third of the vagina and was adherent to the right vaginal sidewall. There was no evidence of parametrial extension. Tissue was sent for biopsy which…

Carcinosarcoma of renal pelvis with immunohistochemical correlation.

Carcinosarcoma, a malignant tumor with biphasic morphology is uncommon in the renal pelvis. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) plays an important role in establishing the diagnosis and differentiating it from other biphasic malignant tumors. We present a rare case of immunohistologically confirmed carcinosarcoma of renal pelvis in a 42-year old female, which possibly developed on a background of multicentric squamous cell carcinoma arising as a consequence of chronic irritation caused by calculi.

A case of rapidly growing pulmonary carcinosarcoma.

We report herein a case of rapidly growing pulmonary carcinosarcoma, a rare and highly malignant lung neoplasm characterized by a biphasic histopathological pattern consisting of both epithelial and sarcomatous components, and we also summarize the clinical features of this entity based on previously reported cases. A 65-year-old man was referred for further examination of a lung tumor after a routine chest X-ray (CXR) showed a tumor shadow in the right upper lung zone. Chest computed tomography (CT) found a 2.0 cm pulmonary mass with suspected chest wall invasion in the right upper lobe, alth…

A case of carcinosarcoma arising in the submandibular gland.

A 54-year-old man presented with an 8-year history of a hard asymptomatic mass of the left submandibular area. Total excision of the left submandibular gland with radical neck dissection was performed under a diagnosis of a submandibular tumor, probably a malignant mixed tumor. The pathologic diagnosis was carcinosarcoma consisting of carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements. The epithelial component was composed of squamous cell carcinoma, undifferentiated carcinoma, and adenocarcinoma. The nonepithelial component was composed of chondrosarcoma, osteosarcoma, spindle cell sarcoma, rhabdomyosarc…

Initial report of a case of carcinosarcoma of the supraglottis.

Minor salivary gland carcinosarcoma is a rare malignancy with an ominous prognosis. This report recounts a single case of supraglottic minor salivary gland carcinosarcoma that was treated aggressively. We discuss the peculiarities of the histology, with special mention of the distinction that must be made between mucosal-origin and salivary-gland-origin carcinosarcoma. Carcinosarcomas are aggressive regardless of their origin, but differentiating their origin is important because the prognosis is worse for those that arise in salivary glands than for those that originate in the surface epithel…

[Carcinosarcoma of the colon, one or two tumors?].

Carcinosarcoma is a rare neoplasm that displays morphological features of both an adenocarcinoma and a sarcoma. The question is whether two tumors co-exist or whether the two morphological aspects represent sequential steps in tumor progression. We report a case of carcinosarcoma of the caecum in a young female. To characterize the two tumor cell populations and to gain insight into the pathogenesis of the lesion, we conducted immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analyses of the tumor. The biphasic aspect of the tumor showed an admixture of carcinoma and spindle-cell sarcomatoid areas. Both…

Carcinosarcoma of the uterine body of mesonephric origin.

A case of carcinosarcoma of mesonephric origin in a 58 year old woman is reported. A cystic tumor with a solid area, measuring 14 cm in greatest diameter, was detected in the pelvic cavity by computerized tomography and ultrasound. Although it was diagnosed as an ovarian cancer for surgical removal, it was found to be entirely located in the myometrium of the left lateral wall of the uterine body and neither ovary was remarkable. Histologically the tumor was composed of epithelial and sarcomatous components. The former showed low papillary pattern, crowded solid nests and cords of cells, and f…

Metaplastic carcinomas of the breast. III. Carcinosarcoma.

The clinical and pathologic features of 70 examples of carcinosarcoma (CS) of the breast are reported. Thirty-three neoplasms had infiltrating carcinoma, seven had in situ carcinoma, and 28 had both admixed or contiguous with the sarcomatous component. Squamous carcinoma, present in 15 neoplasms, was the exclusive epithelial component of two. The admixed carcinoma often appeared distinct from the sarcoma component; however, at high magnification transitional differentiation zones and more subtle merging of infiltrating carcinoma with sarcoma were present in most neoplasms. A total of 40 neopla…

Carcinosarcoma (mixed mesodermal tumor) of the ureter.

An unusual tumor of the ureter in an elderly man is reported. The tumor showed evidence of epithelial and mesenchymal differentiation based on histological and immunocytochemical criteria, and it behaved aggressively, comparable to that seen in other mixed tumors of this type arising from elsewhere within the genitourinary tract. It is proposed that this tumor be designated carcinosarcoma of the ureter.

Post-radiation Uterine Carcinosarcoma: A Case Report.

Uterine carcinosarcoma is a rare, malignant tumor of the endometrium composed of both high-grade epithelial (carcinomatous) and mesenchymal (sarcomatous) components, representing one of the most aggressive histological subtypes of endometrial carcinoma. Prior pelvic radiotherapy has been associated with an increased risk of subsequent aggressive endometrial malignancies, although the latency between irradiation and tumor development may vary considerably. Diagnosis may be delayed because early symptoms can mimic benign post-radiation sequelae. We report a woman in her 60s who, seven years afte…

Paraneoplastic Pulmonary Embolism Revealing Metastatic Uterine Carcinosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) can be a paraneoplastic phenomenon and may occasionally be the first manifestation of an occult malignancy. We present the case of an elderly woman whose "unprovoked" pulmonary embolism (PE) led to the diagnosis of metastatic uterine carcinosarcoma, an aggressive endometrial cancer subtype. CASE: A 74-year-old postmenopausal woman with a history of uterine fibroids and prior breast ductal carcinoma in situ developed progressive dyspnea. She was found to have bilateral PEs with right heart strain and extensive bilateral deep vein thromboses (DVTs). Imag…
