A 61 year old man presented with diffuse large B cell lymphoma of the skin of the back of the shoulder which was excised and treated with ch … ssion. This report is unusual on account of the highly atypical presentation of Burkitt lymphoma as cardiac tamponade, only a few cases having been reported previously, the occurrence of three lymphomas of different pathological and genomic profiles in one patient over a period of eight years and the relatively slow rate of growth of an otherwise fulminant tumour w …

A 57-year-old man presented with worsening symptoms of shortness of breath and chest pain. He was found to have a giant Morgagni hernia with severe compression of his right ventricle on computed tomography scan. The hernia which contained greater omentum, small intestine and transverse colon was urgently repaired through a median sternotomy and laparotomy with a polypropylene mesh. Morgagni hernia is a type of congenital diaphragmatic hernia, which may not be symptomatic until adulthood. Presentation with this degree of right ventricular compression is rare.

Clinical examination and transthoracic echocardiography play a vital role in the management of patients with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade physiology. We report patients in advanced phase 3 cardiac tamponade with variant clinical and hemodynamic presentations. These atypical cardiac tamponade cases include: A patient with severe aortic valve regurgitation who lacked pulsus paradoxus; a patient with systemic sclerosis without hypotension; and a patient with pulmonary hypertension lacking right heart collapse on echocardiography. Recognition of these atypical clinical and hemodynami…

An unusual case of intrapericardial diaphragmatic hernia is presented. Cardiac tamponade occurred in the operating room soon after induction of anaesthesia. Surgical removal of the herniated omentum and stomach allowed haemodynamic improvement. The pathophysiology is discussed and patients with cardiac tamponade reviewed.

Pericarditis with hemodynamic compromise is a rare manifestation of infection with Nocardia asteroides. To our knowledge, only six cases have been reported previously. In contrast to other cases of pericardial disease due to Nocardia, culture of the pericardial fluid in our case was negative while culture of pericardial tissue led to the diagnosis. Surgical intervention and appropriate antibiotic therapy are essential in the treatment of Nocardia pericarditis.

A 32-year-old female patient was operated on for a residual colonic stricture occurring after hemicolectomy. A right internal jugular central venous catheter was inserted during the anaesthetic for postoperative parenteral feeding. The anaesthetic combined both general and epidural anaesthesia, the latter being continued for postoperative analgesia (10 ml.h-1 of 0.125% bupivacaine). Two days later, the patient complained of sudden chest pain, with restlessness, tachycardia, cyanosis, resulting in ventricular tachycardia and cardiac arrest. When admitted to the surgical intensive care unit, the

We report a case of profound hypotension, after induction of general anaesthesia, that resulted from unexpected cardiac tamponade. The differential diagnosis was complicated by the absence of any evidence to indicate that there was significant direct chest injury. Many of the recognised clinical signs of cardiac tamponade were absent, in particular, there was no compensatory tachycardia, and heart rate remained stable despite severe hypotension before surgical drainage of the pericardium. The possible aetiology and pathophysiology is discussed. It is suggested that after major trauma, cardiac …

In patients with valvular heart disease, fever, and cardiomegaly echocardiography is an invaluable noninvasive tool. In this report we describe a young female presenting with cardiac tamponade due to acute rheumatic carditis. Echocardiography showed an exudative pericardial effusion which was haemorrhagic on pericardiocentesis. She responded to steroid therapy with resolution of carditis and pericardial effusion.

CONTEXT: Cardiac tamponade (CT) following cardiac surgery is a potentially fatal complication and the cause of surgical reintervention in 0.1%-6% of cases. There are two types of CT: acute, occurring within the first 48 h postoperatively, and subacute or delayed, which occurs more than 48 h postoperatively. The latter does not show specific clinical signs, which makes it more difficult to diagnose. The factors associated with acute CT (aCT) are related to coagulopathy or surgical bleeding, while the variables associated with subacute tamponade have not been well defined.
AIMS: The primary obj…

Penetrating cardiac injury is rare and frequently not survivable. Significant haemorrhage resulting in cardiac tamponade commonly ensues. Such cardiac tamponade is a clear clinical, radiological and sonographic indicator of significant underlying injury. In the absence of cardiac tamponade, diagnosis can be more challenging. In this case of a 26-year old sailor stabbed at sea, a significant pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade did not occur despite an injury transversing the pericardium. Instead, the pericardial haemorrhage drained into the left pleural cavity resulting in a haemothorax.…

Pericardial effusion is uncommon in cats and most often secondary to congestive heart failure, feline infectious peritonitis or neoplasia. P … late with multiple small nodules on the epicardial surface. Pericardiocentesis acutely resolved the cardiac tamponade, but recurrence prompted subtotal pericardiectomy. Histopathology of surgical biopsies suggested pericardial mesothelioma. Despite surgery, the cat’s clinical condition deteriorated, leading to euthanasia one month later. Autopsy, histopathology and …

This case presents a 48-year-old woman initially diagnosed with an ostium secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) at the age of 36. Twelve years post-intervention, she presented to the emergency department with cardiac tamponade. This case highlights the importance of maintaining prolonged follow-up for individuals undergoing percutaneous ASD closure, given the possibility of potentially fatal late complications of ASD occlusion devices.

Bronchogenic cysts are rare incidental findings, but they can have life-threatening complications. Herein, we report a case of a 44-year-old … effusion with early diastolic collapse of the right ventricle. Pericardiocentesis was performed for cardiac tamponade, followed by thoracotomy with removal of bronchogenic cyst. Herein, we highlight the relation between bronchogenic cysts and cardiac tamponade and review the surgical treatment options.

Europace : European pacing, arrhythmias, and cardiac electrophysiology : journal of the working groups on cardiac pacing, arrhythmias, and cardiac cellular electrophysiology of the European Society of Cardiology2020eng
AIMS: The aim of this study was to analyse tamponades following electrophysiological procedures regarding frequency and mortality in a high-volume centre and to identify independent predictors for severe tamponades.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed a retrospective study on 34 982 consecutive patients undergoing diagnostic electrophysiological studies or catheter ablation of cardiac arrhythmias. The combined endpoint was defined as severe tamponade. Criteria for severe tamponade included surgical repair, repeat pericardiocentesis, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, intrahospital death or death du
