Focused Cardiac Ultrasonography in Cats.

Heart disease is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in cats. Focused cardiac ultrasonography (FCU) is a useful diagnostic tool for identifying heart disease in symptomatic and asymptomatic cats when performed by trained veterinarians. When used in conjunction with other diagnostics such as physical examination, blood biomarkers, electrocardiography, Global FAST, and other point-of-care ultrasonographic examinations, FCU may improve clinical decision making and help clinicians prioritize which cats would benefit from referral for complete echocardiography and cardiac consultation. This a

Influenza Virus Infections in Cats.

In the past, cats were considered resistant to influenza. Today, we know that they are susceptible to some influenza A viruses (IAVs) originating in other species. Usually, the outcome is only subclinical infection or a mild fever. However, outbreaks of feline disease caused by canine H3N2 IAV with fever, tachypnoea, sneezing, coughing, dyspnoea and lethargy are occasionally noted in shelters. In one such outbreak, the morbidity rate was 100% and the mortality rate was 40%. Recently, avian H7N2 IAV infection occurred in cats in some shelters in the USA, inducing mostly mild respiratory disease

Contraception in Dogs and Cats.

Although surgical sterilization is the most common approach to reproductive management of dogs and cats in North America and many other places, there is growing interest in nonsurgical and reversible methods. This review summarizes the methods currently available for use as reversible contraception in dogs and cats, along with cautions about reported side effects. The products covered include synthetic steroid hormones, peptide hormone agonists, vaccines, and a barrier method.

Cystoscopy in dogs and cats.

Cystoscopy has become an important and widely available component of the diagnostic evaluation of diseases of the lower urinary tract in dogs and cats. In addition, a large number of cystoscopic guided procedures have been described that can be used to treat disease processes that were previously treatable only with invasive surgical procedures. This article reviews the indications and contraindications for cystoscopy, cystoscopy equipment and techniques for male and female dogs and cats, potential complications associated with cystoscopy, and management options for these complications.

Pericardial lymphoma in seven cats.

A presumed primary pericardial lymphoma was diagnosed in seven cats. Clinical findings at presentation included poor body condition, dehydration and dyspnoea. Thoracic diagnostic imaging was performed in six cases and revealed pleural effusion and a diffuse thickening of the pericardium. A cytological diagnosis of lymphoma was obtained in six cases; in four cases the diagnosis was confirmed at necropsy. Immunophenotyping was performed in six cases: three cases were classified as T-cell and three as B-cell lymphoma. Four cats did not receive any treatment. One cat received only prednisone and t

Ototoxicity in dogs and cats.

A variety of drugs in veterinary use have side effects that can potentially damage the senses of hearing or balance in animals. A large body of literature exists on the incidence and mechanisms of ototoxicity in experimental animals and in humans, but little is documented in domestic dogs and cats. However, the generality of these adverse actions across species allows one to extrapolate and provide the veterinarian with insight into possible complications of chemotherapy.

Stifle arthrodesis in two cats.

Two Domestic Shorthaired cats were admitted after sustaining multiligamentous injuries of the stifle joint. In one cat, prosthetic ligamentous reconstruction was unsuccessful at maintaining normal stifle stability. Both cats were treated with stifle arthrodesis using internal fixation with a plate and screws without external coaptation. In one case, arthrodesis was achieved using a 2.7 mm 16-hole dynamic compression plate placed medially. In the second case, a 2.7 mm 14-hole dynamic compression plate was placed cranially. No major complications were noted, and both cats were able to return to

Oesophageal disease in 33 cats.

A retrospective study was performed to investigate the frequency of identification and characteristics of oesophageal disease in cats, including assessment of the utility of diagnostic techniques and clinical outcome. Thirty-three cats met the inclusion criteria, giving an in-clinic frequency of 33/2894 (approximately 1%) of feline referral cases. Vomiting and/or regurgitation were the most common presenting signs described, although a number of cats (6/33) showed neither. Useful diagnostic modalities included plain radiography, fluoroscopy, barium radiography and endoscopy. A wide range of di

Dermatophytic pseudomycetomas in four cats.

The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the clinical characteristics and treatment of four cats with dermatophytic pseudomycetoma. Four Persian cats, one female and three males, with age ranging from 1.4 to 5 years, were diagnosed with dermatophytic pseudomycetoma by histological examination and fungal culture. Wood's lamp examination revealed positive fluorescence of hairs in all four cats. Characteristic skin lesions consisted of multifocal, raised, firm and nodular to dome-shaped lesions varying in size from 1 to 8 cm in diameter, with ulcers or fistulas in some of the lesions.

Outcome following splenectomy in cats.

No studies have yet examined whether there are prognostic factors for survival for cats undergoing splenectomies. The medical records of 19 cats that had complete splenectomy were reviewed for information on preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative factors. The most common presenting signs were a palpable abdominal mass in 58% and anorexia in 47% of the cats. Mast cell tumors were the most common reason for splenectomy and were found in 10/19 cats (53%); followed by hemangiosarcoma in 4/19 (21%); and lymphoma in 2/19 (11%). The Kaplan-Meier median survival time (MST) was 197 days, with

Hydrocephalus in dogs and cats.

Hydrocephalus is distension of the ventricular system of the brain related to inadequate passage of cerebrospinal fluid from its point of production within the ventricular system to its point of absorption into the systemic circulation. Developmental disorders are the most common causes of hydrocephalus, but there are other causes as well. Diagnosis is based on the clinical features and on brain imaging to assess ventricular size and to identify any specific causes. Medical therapy can provide temporary relief but definitive treatment usually involves placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt.

Histoplasmosis in dogs and cats.

Histoplasma capsulatum is endemic throughout most of the United States with a high prevalence of infections in the Midwest and South. Histoplasmosis is the second most common systemic fungal disease in cats that may be more susceptible than dogs. Infection occurs by inhalation of conidia from the mycelial phase, which subsequently convert to the yeast form. Histoplasma capsulatum is phagocytized and harbored by cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system. Infection may be subclinical or cause clinical pulmonary granulomatous disease or dissemination. Disseminated disease predominantly affects th

Safety of selamectin in cats.

The safety of the avermectin, selamectin, was evaluated for topical use on the skin of cats of age six weeks and above, including reproducing cats and cats infected with adult heartworms. All studies used healthy cats. Acute safety was evaluated in domestic cross-bred cats. Margin of safety was evaluated in domestic-shorthaired cats, starting at six weeks of age. Reproductive, heartworm-infected, and oral safety studies were conducted in adult, domestic-shorthaired cats. Studies were designed to measure the safety of selamectin at the recommended dosage range of 6-12mgkg(-1) of body weight. As

Prostatic carcinoma in two cats.

Clinical, radiological and pathological features of two cats with prostatic carcinoma are reported. In both cats the presenting history included signs of lower urinary tract disease with haematuria and dysuria. Prostatomegaly was visible radiographically in one cat; an irregular intraprostatic urethra was seen on retrograde contrast urethrography in both cats. In one of the cats, neoplasia was suspected on the basis of a transurethral catheter biopsy. Following a poor response to palliative treatment in both cases, euthanasia was performed with histological confirmation of the diagnosis.
