Sensitivity of the vagal dorsal nucleus nerve cells to insulin deficiency was revealed in alloxan-diabetic rats by karyometry. Control measurements showed absence of similar changes in cell nuclear sizes of the adjoining area, the Nucltractus solitarii. CD44 is a cell adhesion molecule which plays an important role in cell movement and adhesion, e.g. in lymphocyte homing and tumour metastasis. Here we studied the expression of CD44 mRNA and protein immunoreactivity in the facial nucleus after nerve injury and during the ensuing regeneration. Transection of the facial nerve led to a strong up-regulation of CD44, peaking 4 days after injury on the motoneurons of the axotomized facial nucleus. PURPOSE: To objectively assess the morphology of superficial conjunctival surface cells showing squamous metaplasia as seen in contact lens wearers.
METHODS: Impression cytology samples were taken from interpalpebral bulbar conjunctiva from 23 young adult white European women with an average of 6 years of successful daily soft contact lens wear and 23 non-contact-lens-wearing women of the same age. The effect of a moderately severe monaural conductive hearing loss on the development of neuronal size in the avian nucleus magnocellularis (NM) was investigated. NM is considered to be the homologue of the mammalian anteroventral cochlear nucleus and receives large calyceal synaptic endings from the cochlear nerve. Silicone plastic earplugs which produce a 40 dB broadband conductive hearing loss were placed in one external auditory canal of chick embryos on the 18th day of incubation. After hatching, all animals were housed in communal brooders and sacrificed at 4, 10, 25, and 60 days of age.
