A Rare Case Report of C1 Posterior Arch and C2 Laminae Hypertrophy Causing Cervical Myelopathy.

Cervical canal stenosis, localized to upper cervical spine, is very rare which can be developmental or acquired. Hypertrophic osteoarthritis accompanied by dens hypertrophy, hypertrophy of the osodontoideum, ossification of the transverse atlantal ligament, aplasia or developmental defect of the posterior arches of Atlas, and unilateral lateral mass hypertrophy are some of the rare reported conditions causing cervical myelopathy. Localized upper cervical canal stenosis due to hypertrophied C1 posterior arch and C2 laminae hypertrophy as an isolated cause of cervical myelopathy has not been rep

Spinal canal stenosis at the level of the atlas: case report.

We describe a rare case of cervical canal stenosis at the level of the atlas, presenting with cervical myelopathy as an initial symptom. A 55-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a 4-month history of gait disturbance and clumsiness in both hands. He had no history of trauma, and showed left-sided hemihyperesthesia and mild quadriplegia with exaggerated deep tendon reflexes. Plain cervical tomography revealed marked spinal canal stenosis, with the diameter of 8.0 mm at the level of the atlas. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated severe compression of the spinal cord at the atlas, w

[Treatment of fractures of the upper cervical spine (C1 and C2)].

The authors provide a review of current opinions on the treatment of fractures in the region of C1 and C2. It is necessary to take the possibility of this localization of fractures into consideration in polytraumatized patients, in those unconscious, and in cases of algesia in the cervical region. A significant post in diagnostics belongs to CT examination which reveals the extent and type of fracture and the degree of dislocation. The authors refer to the classification of Aebi and Nazarian which should be accepted in spondylo-surgical practice. The authors recommend conservative therapy of a

[Upper cervical spine injuries and their diagnostic features].

The upper cervical spine includes the articulations of the occiput with atlas and the atlas with the axis, as well as the bony structures of the base of the skull, axis, and atlas. The unique anatomy of the upper cervical spine and the typical mechanisms of injury yield a predictable variety of injury patterns. Injuries to this area include occipital condyle fractures, occipitoatlantal dislocations, subluxations and dislocations of the atlantoaxial articulation, atlas fractures, odontoid fractures, and fractures of the arch of the axis. Injuries to this region are relatively common and can be

[Research progress on reatment of unstable atlas fracture with single-segment fixation by transoral approach].

As a common type of fracture in cervical, atlas fracture is frequently unstable due to its special anatomical structure. In a previous treatment, external fixation was likely to bring low bony union rate and long-term neck pain, while occipito-cervical fusion and atlantoaxial fusion sacrifice range of motion in cervical spine. Reduction and single section fixation of atlas by anterior lateral mass screws through the transoral approach were reported by some scholars, and the retrospective study demonstrated the high healing rate, reservation of cervical ROM and less bleeding. But it also has hi

The relationship between vertical malocclusions and ossification changes in the cranial base and upper cervical spine.

The growth and development of the maxillofacial complex share a common embryological origin with the cranial base and upper cervical spine; therefore, anomalies in these regions may be linked to variations in the skeletal pattern. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between the morphological features of the sella turcica bridging, ponticulus posticus, posterior arch deficiency of the first cervical vertebra, known as the atlas, and the cervical vertebral maturation stages and vertical malocclusions. Randomly selected 300 pre-orthodontic treatment patients (aged 7 to 40 years) were d

Evaluation of the First Cervical Vertebra Anatomy for Screw Fixation.

AIM: To conduct a morphometrical analysis of the atlas to facilitate the development of atlas-related treatment methods and demonstrate the variations in atlas anatomy to aid surgical approaches and reduce complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present study was conducted on 58 dry human atlas vertebrae supplied by the Ege University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anatomy. Morphometrical analysis was performed using digital calipers. RESULTS: The quantitative measurements were analyzed for screw fixation. The variations in the atlases were identified as spina bifida (1.7%), accessory f

Jefferson fracture in a child--illustrative case report.

In adults, atlas burst fractures (Jefferson fractures) are not uncommon. In the pediatric population, they are extremely rare, and only few cases have been reported so far. They all showed a highly consistent clinical presentation with rare neurological deficits as well as recovery with full function without any surgical intervention. We describe a case of a Jefferson fracture in a 7.5-year-old-boy after falling onto the top of his head, presenting solely with slight neck pain. The initial radiological characteristics are presented on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computer tomography (C
