AIM: To conduct a morphometrical analysis of the atlas to facilitate the development of atlas-related treatment methods and demonstrate the variations in atlas anatomy to aid surgical approaches and reduce complications.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present study was conducted on 58 dry human atlas vertebrae supplied by the Ege University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anatomy. Morphometrical analysis was performed using digital calipers.
RESULTS: The quantitative measurements were analyzed for screw fixation. The variations in the atlases were identified as spina bifida (1.7%), accessory f

Ewing's sarcoma is an aggressive small round cell tumor and represents the second most common malignant bone neoplasm in children, following osteosarcoma. However, spinal Ewing's sarcoma is a rare entity in children, with extra-vertebral locations being more common. This case is distinguished by several particularities: atypical initial symptoms, and a diagnostic delay possibly related to either underestimation by the family or false reassurance from an initially unremarkable standard radiograph; unusual vertebral involvement; and a cervical location, which is even more exceptional. Moreover,

STUDY DESIGN: The case of a 14-year-old boy who sustained simultaneous fractures of every cervical vertebra in a high-energy snowmobile accident is reported.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of multiple cervical spine fractures and their management.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Injuries from all-terrain vehicles and off-road vehicles, including snowmobiles, are increasing in severity and frequency. The reported case illustrates a result of high-impact loading in which the driver struck his head after being thrown from a snowmobile at high speed.
METHODS: The 14-year-old boy in the reported case

The authors submit a report on a patient with traumatic spondyloptosis of the sixth cervical vertebra which occurred in an adult man when he bumped his head against a standing lorry. The injury of the cervical spine was diagnosed only four weeks after the accident when the patient regained consciousness and the vertebrae were already fixed in a pathological position. Seven years after the injury the patient is satisfied with his health, works in his original occupation, is engaged in sports and leads an active life.

The CT demonstration of a case of congenital spondylolisthesis of the C6 vertebral body is reported. This entity includes bilateral bony defects in the pars interarticularis regions, deranged facet joints, as well as a midline bony cleft in the spinous process. This congenital deformity should be recognized and not mistaken for traumatic spondylolisthesis.

In addition to diagnostic and therapeutic problems of the bony spine injuries in childhood, questions of the participation of the growth plate arise and indicate the following treatment. In the last decade we treated 23 spine injuries, resulting after fall from height. Most of the cases showed single to multiple compression fractures of the anterior spine followed in a descending frequence by the lateral compression fractures, the disconnection ot the epiphyseal plate of the axis and the actual luxation fractures with injury of the stratum germinativum. In contrast to the prognostic favourable

This study aims to carry out the first geometric morphometric analysis of the 3D size and shape of the full series of cervical vertebrae delving into variability related to sex and population background. For this reason, we analyzed the cervical vertebrae of both males and females belonging to Europeans, Africans, and Greenland Inuit. We 3D-scanned a total of 219 cervical vertebrae of males and females of three different modern human populations (European, African, and Inuit). A minimum of 72 landmarks and curve semilandmarks were positioned in each of the 3D vertebral models. Landmark configu…

On profile radiographs of adults, an association between fusions of cervical vertebrae, deviations in the cranial base and mandibular retrognathia has been documented radiographically. An elaboration of this association on a histological level is needed. In human triploid fetuses severe mandibular retrognathia and deviations in the cranial base have previously been described radiographically (without cephalometry) and cervical column fusions radiographically as well as histologically. Therefore, triploid fetuses were chosen to elucidate the cranial base cephalomterically and histologically. In…

OBJECTIVE: To explore the choice and effect of internal fixation in treating upper cervical vertebrae instability through anterior approach.
METHODS: From March 2000 to September 2010,83 patients with upper cervical vertebrae instability were treated with internal fixation through anterior approach. There were 59 males and 24 females with a mean age of 42 years old (ranged, 20 to 68). Among these patients, 36 patients were treated with odontoid screw fixation, 16 patients with C1,2 transarticular screw fixation, 23 patients with C2,3 steel plate fixation, 5 patients with odontoid screw and tr…

OBJECTIVES: To describe the main dimensions of the cervical vertebrae and spinal canal in two groups with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and a non-inflammatory control group.
METHODS: There were altogether 158 female patients in three different groups included in the study: a group with severe, complicated JIA (sJIA), a population based JIA group (pJIA), and fibromyalgia patients as a non-inflammatory control group (pFM). The patients' clinical records and cervical spine radiographs taken in adult age (>17 years) were evaluated.
RESULTS: The patients with sJIA had the mean area of the 3…

The authors describe a previously unreported constellation of developmental anomalies of the C2 vertebra, which predisposed to the development of cervical myelopathy in a young patient. The embryology of the vertebral column is reviewed briefly, and the origin of each anomaly of the C2 vertebra is traced to one of the two early stages in development as follows: 1) the formation of the mesenchymal vertebra or 2) its induction to cartilage. This case emphasizes the importance of congenital stenosis in the development of cervical myelopathy in young patients. The outcome is favorable when it is t

OBJECTIVE: To study the degree and changes of cervical spinal canal stenosis by MRI scans in flexion and extension of the cervical vertebrae.
METHODS: Thirty cases of cervical stenosis included 13 male and 17 female with an average age of 39 years ranging from 28 to 66 years. The sagittal diameter of cervical spinal canal were below 10 mm (absolute stenosis) in 12 cases, within 10 to 12 mm (correspondence stenosis) in 18 cases. MRI scans in neutrality, flexion, extension performanced and the degree of cervical spinal canal stenosis and the changes of spinal cord compression were evaluated afte…

Congenital deformities of the spine are a consequence of anomalous vertebral development in the embryo and may be identified at birth or remain unnoticed until adulthood. Minor bony malformations of all types occur in up to 12% of the general population and are usually not apparent. In contrast, congenital spinal malformations that result in progressive spinal deformity are relatively rare. Klippel-Feil syndrome is a complex heterogeneous entity that results in cervical vertebral fusion and sometimes can occur associated to hemivertebra. We present a case of a 43-year-old male who presented to
