BACKGROUND: During periods of civil strife, the need for trauma care and lack of sufficient cleft surgeons causes an increase in children left untreated with cleft lip and palate deformities. During the Syrian war, some cleft care was provided through visiting charities, with surgeries performed both in Syria and neighboring countries. There is a need to increase the number of adequately trained cleft surgeons available in such regions so that care can be achieved beyond mission trips.

While an effective method of screening for uterine cervical cancer is available, utilization of that method has been less than satisfactory in the high-risk indigent population of Louisiana. From 1984 through 1987, 171 new cases of invasive squamous cell carcinoma and 149 new cases of squamous carcinoma in situ of the uterine cervix were examined and/or treated at the Charity Hospital of Louisiana in New Orleans. The effort to repurpose old drugs for new uses is not sufficient; even drugs that have been used clinically for decades must undergo expensive clinical trials. This process requires the pharmaceutical industry to fund the repatenting of old drugs. Because inexpensive drugs are necessary for people around the world, attempts should be made to develop nonprofit drugs through clinical trials of generic drugs that are funded by governments and charities. Evidence supports the use the old anti-alcoholic drug Antabuse as a new nonprofit drug for cancer.

This study aimed to identify unique social connection factors associated with cognitive impairment among older adults. Longitudinal data from the 2010 to 2020 Health and Retirement Study were used.
