The aim of this systematic narrative literature review is to explore empirical evidence as to how a multiprofessional approach to child protection decision making is implemented in hospitals settings. Child protection cases where there is a suspicious serious injury suspected sexual abuse or serious neglect are often investigated in hospital, involving a number of relevant professions. Five electronic bibliographic databases were used for the search. To be included in the review studies had to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, report on empirical research, be available full text in Engl

Child Supervision and Burn Outcome among Admitted Patients at Major Trauma Hospitals in the Gambia.

Burn-related injuries are a significant burden in children, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where more than 90% of burn-related pediatric deaths occur. Lack of adult supervision of children is a major risk for pediatric burn injuries. The goal of this paper was to examine the general characteristics of burns and identify burn injury outcomes among adult-supervised children compared to those who were not supervised. The study examined burn injury and clinical characteristics among all burn patients admitted to two trauma hospitals in The Gambia, West Africa. At intake

Using routinely collected hospital data for child maltreatment surveillance: issues, methods and patterns.

BACKGROUND: International data on child maltreatment are largely derived from child protection agencies, and predominantly report only substantiated cases of child maltreatment. This approach underestimates the incidence of maltreatment and makes inter-jurisdictional comparisons difficult. There has been a growing recognition of the importance of health professionals in identifying, documenting and reporting suspected child maltreatment. This study aimed to describe the issues around case identification using coded morbidity data, outline methods for selecting and grouping relevant codes, and

Determining the needs of chinese parents during the hospitalization of Their child diagnosed with cancer: an exploratory study.

In Hong Kong, as in other modern societies, cancer is the second cause of death among children. Studies show that childhood cancer affects all family members who frequently experience emotional and social problems resulting from managing the stress created by the disease and side effects of treatment. This subsequently results in parents experiencing a range of different needs. There is little evidence available of the needs of Chinese parents during the hospitalization of their child. An exploratory study was undertaken using in-depth semistructured interviews with 5 parents recruited from th

Short-term follow-up of child psychiatric hospitalization: clinical description, predictors, and correlates.

Short-term outcomes were evaluated for 65 children who were followed for 2, 4, or 6 months after psychiatric hospitalization. Child (e.g., aggression), parent (e.g., depression), family dysfunction (caretaker inconsistencies), and the modalities of treatment (e.g., point system) are described. Analyses of variance revealed no effects of follow-up interval or length of stay. A regression analysis revealed that low improvement was predicted by child attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity and depressive symptoms, older age, neurological dysfunction, and history of physical abuse. High impr

"Love is the best medicine": reimagining pediatric hospitalization through child- and family-centered care.

Pediatric hospitalization involves not only treatment but also exposing the child to an unfamiliar environment, which may increase fear, anxiety, and depersonalization of care. This article describes an experience of transformation in pediatric practice, highlighting how humanization interventions contribute to the well-being of children with serious illnesses and their families, and aims to integrate emotional well-being into clinical practice. The program EL AMOR ES LA MEJOR MEDICINA (love is the best medicine) seeks to create a supportive environment that complements traditional care, promo

Pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes by Child Opportunity Index, race and ethnicity.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between Child Opportunity Index (COI) and race and ethnicity and pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) outcomes and the role of bystander response (bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation and/or defibrillator use) as a mediator. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study using the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) of children ≤18 years with OHCA. The exposures are COI quintiles (very low indicates the most disadvantaged neighborhoods) and race and ethnicity. The primary outcome is survival to hospital discharge with favorab

Antenatal Psychiatric Hospitalization: Factors Associated With Newborns' Custody Under Child Protective Services.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric illness during pregnancy is associated with adverse obstetric outcomes, but investigations into its impact on parenting capacity are limited. Child Protective Services (CPS) contact disproportionately impacts families marginalized by poverty, mental health disorders, and substance use disorders. Recently, there have been investigations into the significance of psychiatric illness and nonmental health-related factors that predict CPS custody arrangements. OBJECTIVE: To identify clinical factors associated with newborns' custody under CPS for mothers with antenatal psych

Unusual variant of choledochal cyst in a child: A case report, in Tertiary Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia.

Case series of child sexual abuse: Abia State University Teaching Hospital experience.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse remains a serious infringement on the rights of the child. Though it appears to be viewed less seriously among adolescents, the consequences may be more severe and less obvious for the younger child. Age of the child appears notto be a deterrent. There is paucity of local data in the sub-region on this important social problem. The circumstance surrounding child sexual abuse in our environment needs to be reviewed. This study sets out to evaluate the characteristics of victims of child sexual abuse and to proffer solutions on how to stem the tide of the crime. O
