A comparison of chilled and room temperature cabbage leaves in treating breast engorgement.

This study compared the effectiveness of chilled and room temperature green cabbage leaves in reducing the discomfort of breast engorgement in postpartum mothers. Twenty-eight lactating women with breast engorgement used chilled cabbage leaves on one breast and room-temperature cabbage leaves on the other for a two-hour period. Pre-treatment pain levels were compared with post-treatment levels for both conditions. There was no difference in the post-treatment ratings for the two treatments; mothers reported significantly less pain with both treatments. We concluded that it is not necessary to

Chilling port wine stains improves the response to argon laser therapy.

Twenty-three patients with facial port wine stains were studied to determine whether chilling lesional skin at the time of treatment could improve the outcome of argon laser therapy and whether this effect could be attributed to increased hemoglobin content of chilled sites, as hypothesized on clinical grounds. Each patient was biopsied in two representative and clinically identical sites, once at room temperature and once immediately after application of ice to the skin surface for 2 to 3 minutes. Two additional identical sites were treated with an argon laser in the same manner. Histologic s

Inhibition of ascorbic acid on Pseudomonas bubulae under super-chilled storage.

To explore the inhibitory effect of 1% ascorbic acid on spoilage bacteria under super-chilled storage, tilapia fillets either with natural microbiota or inoculated with Pseudomonas bubulae P1, a dominant spoiler derived from tilapia, were employed in this research. Results showed that ascorbic acid significantly inhibited bacterial growth, delayed sensory spoilage, and reduced the levels of total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) in both types of fillets stored at -1.5 °C. Further analysis indicated that the reduction in TVB-N was attributed to the diminished ammonia production by P1. Transcript

Material basis and mechanism of Ephedra sinica in interfering with wind-chill cold.

Ephedra sinica has a long history in medicine, i.e., as the first medicinal plant for treating wind-chill colds. However, few studies have shown its material basis and mechanism of action, so this article mainly focuses on these two issues. Rats were stimulated by fan blowing and low temperature for 7 days, following which alkaloid extract (SWJ), non-alkaloid extract (FSWJ), and polysaccharide extract (DT) from Ephedra sinica (MH) were administered for 4 days. First, the body temperature, sweat spots, activity status, and cough-related indexes were detected to screen the pharmacodynamic materi

Supplementation of chilling storage medium with glutathione protects rooster sperm quality.

This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of addition of reduced glutathione (GSH) to the extender on the rooster's semen quality parameters and fertility potential. Semen samples were diluted with Lake extender contained 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 8 mM GSH. Then, were chilled to 5 °C and stored for a period of 48 h. Sperm motion characteristics, viability, membrane integrity, lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial activity and fertility potential were evaluated. At the initiation of the experiment (0 h), GSH did not affect sperm parameters, while 2-4 mM GSH improved (P ≤ 0.05) quality indicators during

Risk presented to minimally processed chilled foods by psychrotrophic Bacillus cereus.

BACKGROUND: Spores of psychrotrophic Bacillus cereus may survive the mild heat treatments given to minimally processed chilled foods. Subsequent germination and cell multiplication during refrigerated storage may lead to bacterial concentrations that are hazardous to health. SCOPE AND APPROACH: This review is concerned with the characterisation of factors that prevent psychrotrophic B. cereus reaching hazardous concentrations in minimally processed chilled foods and associated foodborne illness. A risk assessment framework is used to quantify the risk associated with B. cereus and minimally p

Left circumflex STEMI presenting as de Winter sign, an ECG Zebra that gives you the chills! A case report.

de Winter ECG sign is an anterior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction equivalent, which refers to an occlusion of the proximal left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery with tall T waves and the absence of ST elevations in the precordial leads on the electrocardiogram (ECG). This sign is often under-recognized and not treated as an ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction which can increase the morbidity and mortality of such a life-threatening condition. Here we report a characteristic de Winter ECG sign involving left circumflex artery as culprit vessel, which was managed with

Diagnostic accuracy of self-reported food consumption and shaking chills in predicting bacteremia in outpatients: A prospective, multicenter observational study.

Bacteremia, a critical condition that can lead to sepsis, is often diagnosed using blood cultures, which may yield false positives, leading to unnecessary treatments. Although clinical indicators, such as shaking chills and food consumption, have been identified as predictors of bacteremia, their diagnostic accuracy in outpatients, particularly when considering the timing of blood collection, remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of self-reported food consumption and shaking chills in detecting bacteremia, focusing on the time interval between the last meal and bl…

Winter chilling regulates seedling development in Mediterranean terrestrial orchids cultivated in vitro.

Effective ex situ propagation is critical for the conservation and restoration of threatened terrestrial orchids. However, large-scale propagation remains constrained by developmental bottlenecks including the transition from protocorms to plantlets with storage organs. Although cold exposure is often recommended to improve propagation success, the thermal conditions governing survival and post-dormancy performance remain poorly understood. We experimentally exposed protocorms of the Mediterranean terrestrial orchids Anacamptis coriophora, A. laxiflora, Himantoglossum hircinum, and H. robertia

Preparation of magnetic agarose microspheres by spray-chilling method and their application in IgG purification.

In this study, magnetic agarose microspheres (MAM) were successfully prepared by spray-chilling method. The effects of process parameters such as spray height, aqueous phase flow rate and spray pressure on the morphology and particle size distribution of microspheres were systematically investigated, and the optimal preparation conditions (spray height of 130 cm, aqueous phase flow rate of 0.22 L/min, and spray pressure of 0.25 MPa) were determined. Spherical MAM with uniform particle size distribution was obtained. MAM was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, VSM, etc. The results confirmed that magn

Chilling Accumulation Shapes Transcriptomic Responses to Warming Exposure During Grapevine Deacclimation.

During winter, grapevine (Vitis vinifera) bud dormancy and cold hardiness are regulated by complex interactions between chilling accumulation and warm temperature cues. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying physiological transitions during winter remain poorly understood. In this study, we performed time-series RNA-seq on "Cabernet Sauvignon" dormant buds with varying chilling accumulation, followed by warm temperature exposure under a controlled forcing condition. Using weighted gene co-expression network analysis, empirical modeling, and a novel calculation of molecular warm temperatu

Effect of electron and X-ray irradiation on microbiological and chemical parameters of chilled turkey.

The purpose of this work was to compare the effect of electron and X-ray irradiation on microbiological content and volatile organic compounds in chilled turkey meat. Dose ranges which significantly suppress the pathogenic microflora while maintaining the organoleptic properties of the turkey meat are different for electron and X-ray irradiation. According to the study it is recommended to treat chilled turkey using X-ray irradiation with the dose ranging from 0.5 to 0.75 kGy, while in electron irradiation permissible doses should be within 0.25-1 kGy. Three main groups of volatile compounds:

Hydrogen sulfide is required for salicylic acid-induced chilling tolerance of cucumber seedlings.

Salicylic acid (SA) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) have been proved to be multifunctional signal molecules to participate in the response of plants to abiotic stresses. However, it is still unclear whether there is interaction between SA and H2S in response to chilling intensity of cucumber seedlings. Here, we found SA was sensitive to chilling intensity. Under normal condition, NaHS (H2S donor) or removing endogenous H2S with hypotaurine (HT, a specific scavenger of H2S) and DL-propargylglycine (PAG, a specific inhibitor of H2S) has no effect on endogenous SA level; however, SA induced endogenous

L-carnitine is a survival factor for chilled storage of rooster semen for a long time.

Rooster sperm is sensitive to cooling, which restricts procedures to store sperms for extended periods of time for artificial insemination of commercial flocks. This study was conducted to evaluate the suitability of adding L-carnitine (LC) to chilled-storage of rooster sperm and its effects on sperm quality parameters and its fertility potential during storage at 5 °C. Pooled semen from roosters were divided into six equal aliquots and diluted with media supplemented with different concentrations of LC (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 8 mM LC). Diluted semen samples were cooled to 5 °C and stored over 48
