[Prevalence and treatment of pharyngeal Chlamydia trachomatis infections].

In recent years, the number of the patients with pharyngeal infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis is believed to be on the rise due to diversification in sexual behaviors. In addition, pharyngeal infection by C. trachomatis is often asymptomatic, and this is also believed to be a major factor for the increase of the disease. In this study, we conducted a survey among general females and commercial sex workers (CSWs) to study their sexual behavior and prevalence of chlamydial infections (in uterine cervix and pharynx). The results showed that orogenital contact has become a common act, even

Advances in the management of Chlamydia pneumoniae infections.

One of the major characteristics of Chlamydia spp. is its ability to cause prolonged, often subclinical infections. Chronic, persistent infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several chronic diseases initially not thought to be infectious, including asthma, arthritis and atherosclerosis. C. pneumoniae is susceptible in vitro to a wide range of antimicrobial agents that target either protein or DNA synthesis, including macrolides, ketolides, tetracyclines, quinolones and rifamycins. Practically all treatment studies evaluating presented or published to da

[The infections by Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae].

Among sexually transmitted diseases, Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections are found most frequently. Recently, their incidence in youths has increased. The rate of infection by human immunodeficiency virus is increased in patients who have been infected by Chlamydia trachomatis. In view of this, early detection and treatment of Chlamydia trachomatis infection appear to be important. Asymptomatic infections by Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are not rare among gynecological patients. However, in patients infected by both of these pathogens it is difficult t

Chlamydia trachomatis infections--the Royal Women's Hospital experience.

During the 18-month period from December 1, 1985 to May 31, 1987 Chlamydia trachomatis was the most-common sexually-transmitted agent to be identified at the Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne. It was isolated from 4% of all specimens for which such culture was requested and was found five-times more frequently than was Neisseria gonorrhoeae. A review of the clinical presentation and the management of the 100 public patient for this period whose cervical specimens were found to give positive results for the presence of chlamydiae revealed that 77% of the women were less than 25 years of age, 78

[Diagnosis of ocular Chlamydia infections by direct detection].

Conjunctival smears of 75 patients with a presumptive diagnosis of oculogenital chlamydial infection were evaluated with the monoclonal antibody direct test (SyvaMerck and Orion Research). 69 isolates were correlated with McCoy cell cultures and serum IgG immunofluorescent tests. Sensitivity (100%) and specificity (56-76%) of the monoclonal antibody direct test was comparable to data from recently published studies on genital smears.

Chlamydia trachomatis infections in men with Reiter's syndrome.

Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from 9 of 19 men with acute, nondiarrheal Reiter's syndrome who had not recently taken antibiotics. None of 8 untreated men with other forms of arthritis were infected with this organism. Chlamydia trachomatis-specific antibody titers and cellular immune responses were positive significantly more often in 35 treated and untreated men with acute, nondiarrheal Reiter's syndrome than in 7 men with diarrhea-associated Reiter's syndrome and 8 men with other forms of arthritis. Mean peak chlamydial antibody titers and mean lymphocyte transformation stimulation indi

Chlamydia trachomatis infections in women with urogenital symptoms.

Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from 30 to 100 women attending a family physician's office with dysuria, frequency or vaginal discharge, compared with 2 of 30 asymptomatic women. Multiple infections were common: C. trachomatis coexisted with Gardnerella vaginalis, Candida albicans, Trichomonas vaginalis or a bacterial cause of urinary tract infection in 15 patients. C. trachomatis was isolated alone from 15 symptomatic women. The source of the positive culture was not always the site of symptoms. C. trachomatis was isolated from both the cervix and the urine of 9 patients, either simultaneo

Chlamydia trachomatis and mycoplasma infections in tubal pregnancy.

Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infection is an important factor for tubal pregnancy. However, whether Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) and Mycoplasma hominis (MH) infections are also involved in tubal pregnancy remains unknown. This study is aimed to detect CT, UU, and MH in cervical secretions from patients with tubal pregnancy and control women in early pregnancy, to explore their prevalence rates and drug susceptibilities. Analysis was performed on patients with tubal pregnancy and those requiring termination of early pregnancy at <12 weeks from July 2013 to March 2014. Cervical secretions were test

Diagnosing Chlamydia Trachomatis Urinary Tract Infections--Preliminary Report.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis is mentioned among the etiologic factors for urinary tract infections. Chlamydias are parasites inside a cell. A very significant problem of C. trachomatis infections is their asymptomatic character. The most frequent infections caused by these bacteria are inflammations of the urethra and bladder; of the vagina, cervix, vaginal cavity and adnexa in women; and of the epididymis, testicles and prostate in men. In the diagnosis of C. trachomatis infections, the following methods are used: immunofluorescent techniques, immunoenzymatic assays, serological examinat

Chlamydia trachomatis infections in neonates and young children.

In 1911, Lindner and colleagues identified intracytoplasmic inclusions in infants with a nongonococcal form of ophthalmia neonatorum called inclusion conjunctivitis of the newborn (ICN). Mothers of affected infants were found to have inclusions in their cervical epithelial cells, fathers of such infants had inclusions in their urethral cells, and the epidemiology of sexually transmitted chlamydial infections was revealed. Fifty years later, chlamydial isolation procedures were developed, and studies again demonstrated Chlamydia trachomatis as an etiology of ICN and the female birth canal as th

Azithromycin in the management of Chlamydia trachomatis infections.

The unique pharmacological profile of the azalide macrolide azithromycin, coupled with its in vitro activity against both Chlamydia trachomatis and the ureaplasmas, suggested that genital infections caused by these bacteria could be successfully treated with a single dose of the antibiotic. This has now been confirmed in worldwide clinical studies. A single oral dose of azithromycin 1 g eradicates C. trachomatis in almost 100% of cases of non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis. Unfortunately, there are no specific clinical signs for genital chlamydial infection. It is therefore necessary to

Genital infections in men associated with Chlamydia trachomatis.

The advent of new diagnostic procedures has made it possible for urologists to detect chlamydial presence in genital infections. Many studies have shown chlamydial association with urethritis. However, its presence in prostatitis and epididymitis has not been clearly defined yet. In this study we investigated the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis using enzyme linked immuno assay (ELISA) antigen and antibody detection method in sexually active men with different genital infections. We have found that in 32.1% of patients with non-gonococcal urethritis chlamydial antigen is detectable. We also h

[Genital chlamydia infections--clinical aspects, diagnosis and therapy].

Non-gonococcal urethritis and its counterpart in women have become the most frequent genital infection worldwide. As Chlamydia trachomatis is the major causative agent interest has focused on this bacterium. While genital chlamydial infection in men often is manifest the opposite holds true for women. Major complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease can nevertheless turn up. Therefore efficient diagnostic tools are badly needed. If tissue culture procedures are not available direct specimen tests can be performed using fluorescence labelled monoclonal antibodies. For therapy tetracyclin

Chlamydia trachomatis infections in Kenya - sexually transmitted and ocular infections: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), a Gram-negative intracellular bacterium, is differentiated into three biovars associated with distinct clinical syndromes, ranging from trachoma, the world's cause of preventable blindness, to the most common sexually transmitted infection. This variability underscores CT's significant impact on public health, particularly in low-resource settings. In Kenya, where the demographic is predominantly younger, the burden of CT remains poorly understood and potentially underestimated. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of both sexually tran

Systematic Infection of Chlamydia Pneumoniae.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cpn) is one of the most common respiratory pathogens in children and adults. It is characterized as an obligate intracellular parasite. Peripheral blood monocytes (PBMC), lymphocytes, and macrophages are involved in spreading chlamydia infection to extrapulmonary organs indicating that Cpn infection can cause systematic symptoms in vivo via blood transmission. METHODS: This review summarizes the mechanisms of Cpn infection in host cells, the immune response of the body, and the relationship between Cpn infection and some chronic diseases. RESULTS: Cpn partic

Screening for genital chlamydia infection.

BACKGROUND: Genital infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis are the most prevalent bacterial sexually transmitted infection worldwide. Screening of sexually active young adults to detect and treat asymptomatic infections might reduce chlamydia transmission and prevent reproductive tract morbidity, particularly pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, which can cause tubal infertility and ectopic pregnancy. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects and safety of chlamydia screening versus standard care on chlamydia transmission and infection complications in pregnant and non-pregnant women and i
