AIMS: The total cholesterol (TC)/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ratio may carry additional information not available in more commonly used single cholesterol measures. Analysis of discordance between lipid parameters might help assess the impact of such additional information on the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. We aimed to investigate the role of the TC/HDL-cholesterol ratio in determining atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk when discordant with low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and non-HDL-cholesterol.

BACKGROUND: The neutral cardiovascular outcome of the PROMINENT trial, despite substantial triglyceride (TG) reduction with pemafibrate, highlights limitations in conventional lipid biomarker interpretation. TG reduction was not accompanied by decreased apolipoprotein B (apoB), suggesting persistence of circulating atherogenic particle burden.
OBJECTIVE: To propose a kinetic framework distinguishing biomarkers of remnant lipoprotein persistence from those reflecting downstream lipoprotein remodeling and to reconsider the interpretation of lipid changes observed in PROMINENT.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Self-collected capillary blood sampling with postal shipment may improve access to routine monitoring of HbA1c, creatinine, and lipid parameters, but evidence on concordance with venous samples under real-world transport conditions remains limited. This study evaluated the concordance of HbA1c, creatinine, and lipid parameters between self-collected mailed capillary samples, mailed venous samples, and courier-transported venous samples.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, participants scheduled for a blood draw in a general practice office self-collected a

BACKGROUND: Low-density lipoproteins cholesterol (LDL-C) is a key parameter for assessing the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Direct measurement of LDL-C is not always possible due to practical or financial reasons, making the use of calculation formulas essential. The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of four different formulas proposed by Friedewald, Sampson, Anandaraja, and Martin-Hopkins for calculating LDL-C compared to direct method in patients with serum triglyceride levels from 4.5 to 9.0 mmol/L in the population of Vojvodina.

Dietary lipids play a critical role in the development of cardiovascular disease and cancer by influencing key cellular processes. Lipoprotein and fatty acid receptors activate intracellular signaling pathways that promote tumor growth and vascular remodeling. A key event in both cancer and vascular diseases is the retention of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and other lipoprotein particles by proteoglycans in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of atherosclerotic plaques and the tumor stroma. This retention facilitates lipoprotein modification processes. Dysregulated uptake of modified lipoproteins

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is the pre-eminent target for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Despite the expansive evidence supporting therapeutic reductions in LDL-C with statin therapy, many high-risk patients do not achieve guideline-recommended treatment targets resulting in avoidable cardiovascular events and higher healthcare expenditures. Underutilization of effective LDL-C lowering is exacerbated by low adherence to statin therapy even among patients following an acute coronary event. Adjunctive therapies such as ezetimibe an

LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) has long been recognized as a primary contributor to cardiovascular disease. Over time, guideline-recommended LDL-C targets have varied considerably, trending toward progressively more aggressive therapeutic goals. The focus on residual risk reduction and development of novel therapies-including PCSK9 inhibitors, siRNA-based treatments, and ANGPTL3 inhibitors-have significantly expanded the options for achieving unprecedentedly low LDL-C levels. Given the fundamental role of cholesterol in cellular function, it has been long been postulated that very low cholesterol cou

Familial hypercholesterolemia is a monogenic disorder that leads to premature atherosclerosis as a result of lifelong exposure to elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Both genetic traits and lifestyle factors can influence LDL-C levels. Adults with LDL-C of 170 mg/dL and higher may benefit from genetic evaluation to accurately assess their risk of atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: APOE is a strong risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and associated with higher low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. Moreover, LDL-C is associated with the development of clinically ascertained AD; however, whether this association is present with the underlying neuropathological manifestations of AD or whether it is independent of the effect of APOE is unknown and is the focus of this paper.
METHODS: Individuals in the Religious Orders Study/Memory and Ageing Project cohorts with longitudinal measures of blood lipids and detailed autopsies were studied. We mode

OBJECTIVES: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) estimation is critical for risk classification, prevention and treatment of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Predictive equations and direct LDL-C are used. We investigated the comparability between the Martin/Hopkins, Sampson, Friedewald and eight other predictive equations on two analysers, to determine whether the equation or analyser influences predicted LDL-C result.
METHODS: In two unpaired datasets, 9,995 lipid profiles were analysed by the Abbott Architect and 4,782 by the Roche Cobas analysers. Non-parametric stat

BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend nonstatin lipid-lowering agents in patients at very high risk for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) if low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) remains ≥70 mg/dL on maximum tolerated statin treatment. It is uncertain if this approach benefits patients with LDL-C near 70 mg/dL. Lipoprotein(a) levels may influence residual risk.
OBJECTIVES: In a post hoc analysis of the ODYSSEY Outcomes (Evaluation of Cardiovascular Outcomes After an Acute Coronary Syndrome During Treatment With Alirocumab) trial, the authors evaluated the benefit of adding the propr

BACKGROUND: Statins have emerged as the global leader in pharmacologic therapy for dyslipidaemia, and rosuvastatin has demonstrated clinical efficacy as well as safety in several clinical trials and postmarketing analyses.
AIM: The present article reviewed the effects of rosuvastatin on the quantity and the quality of low-density lipoproteins (LDL).
METHODS: We searched for and reviewed all the available evidence in a systematic way. A literature search (by Medline and Scopus) was performed using the following headings: 'LDL-cholesterol', 'LDL size', 'LDL subclasses', 'small dense LDL', 'apo

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sex differences in the longitudinal evolution of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) management among patients with chronic coronary syndromes (CCS) are not well known.
METHODS: In the international CLARIFY registry, which included patients with CCS, LDL-C levels were monitored annually over the 5-year follow-up period. The analysis included patients with available LDL-C measurement at baseline. Target LDL-C was set at 100 mg/dL, in line with prevailing recommendations at enrolment. Sex-specific differences in LDL-C were adjusted for age and geographical region. I

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The Portfolio Diet has demonstrated clinically meaningful reductions in LDL-C concentrations. Variations in ABCA1, ABCG8, APOA5, ANGPTL3, and APOC1 have also been associated with LDL-C and other blood lipid concentrations. The interaction between these genetic variations and the Portfolio Diet on LDL-C is unclear. Therefore, we examined whether variations in genes involved in lipid metabolism modify the association between the Portfolio Diet Score (PDS) and its components and LDL-C concentrations.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This cross-sectional analysis included 1490 young adult

AIMS: To investigate the relative contribution of on-treatment low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and C-reactive protein (CRP) to the risk of recurrent stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) in patients with history of ischemic stroke.
METHODS: A total of 1095 patients with non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke were randomized into two groups: control and patients receiving 10 mg of pravastatin per day. After excluding 18 patients who did not have baseline CRP data, the effects of LDL cholesterol and CRP on recurrent stroke and TIA were prospectively assessed in 1077 patients.

AIM: Our previous "J-BENEFIT (Japan BEzafibrate cliNical EFfectIveness and Tolerability)" study demonstrated that bezafibrate improves blood lipid profiles and glucose control in dyslipidemic patients with diabetes. However, bezafibrate did not significantly improve low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), although some patients showed decreases while others showed increases in the LDL-C levels. Therefore, a subgroup analysis of the J-BENEFIT study was conducted to identify factors influencing the bezafibrate-induced changes in the LDL-C levels.
METHODS: Of the 3,316 patients in the J-BEN

Research into the management of dyslipidaemia has increasingly focussed on the importance of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. It is well known that low levels of HDL are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. Recent data have highlighted the anti-atherogenic actions of HDL such as anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative activities, and of course, reverse cholesterol transport. This latter observation may explain certain effects on atherosclerotic plaques, in particular the observation that plaque regression can occur when treatments augment HDL-C levels. This

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a leading cause of death. Although dietary cholesterol from eggs has been a focus of dietary guidelines, recent evidence suggests that saturated fat has a greater impact on LDL cholesterol.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the independent effects of dietary cholesterol and saturated fat on LDL concentrations.
METHODS: In this randomized, controlled, cross-over study (clinicaltrials.gov, NCT05267522), 61 adults (age 39 ± 12 y, BMI 25.8 ± 5.9 kg/m2) with baseline LDL cholesterol <3.5 mmol/L (135.3 μg/dL) were assigned to 3 isocaloric diets for 5
