Malnutrition in the field. Nigerian Civil War 1968-9.

A short-term, large-scale medical and feeding programme has been provided for a population of 150,000 in the bush area near Udi in eastern Nigeria (Biafra). By January 1969 8,000 patients were receiving medical treatment each week for varying degrees of protein malnutrition (including kwashiorkor), vitamin deficiency, and dehydration; while 100,000 received weekly rations of a protein-supplemented diet. Close cooperation between the medical team-which consisted of one doctor, four nurses, and two relief workers-and the local Ibo people contributed to the success of the relief programme.

The Pendulum Swings from Deinstitutionalization to Expanded Civil Commitment.

Over time, U.S. civil commitment laws have evolved from broad, paternalistic statutes to more narrowly defined legal standards that emphasize individual liberty, least-restrictive treatment, and due process. This shift contributed to deinstitutionalization as state hospital beds decreased and the number of those meeting the new involuntary commitment standards diminished. Subsequent analyses found that, as states narrowed their criteria for involuntary commitment and as community mental health systems strained to absorb the gap, homelessness and criminal justice involvement among people with m

Civil medical liability in general surgery: A systematic review.

Civil medical liability is an important issue in modern surgical practice, affecting both medical practice and the doctor-patient relationship, and contributing to the increasing use of defensive medicine. General surgery, as a predominantly invasive specialty with a wide range of emergency and elective procedures, is at increased risk of legal claims. The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the international literature on the civil medical liability of general surgeons, with an emphasis on the types of procedures involved, the causes of lawsuits, and the reported compensation

Civil society and perilous medicine in Africa: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Conflict has not been a public health priority for governmental organisations, and evidence on civil society organisation (CSO) contributions to the issue is limited. The present study synthesised the available evidence on the role of CSOs in conflict and health in Africa. METHODS: We employed a systematic review using a systematic search of MEDLINE, PubMed, CINHAL, Web of Science and Scopus for English written articles between 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2023. The four concepts for the search included CSO or non-governmental organisation (NGO), conflict, health and Africa. RES

Keratoconus in Civil Aviation Pilots in a Report of Six Cases.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus is a progressive noninflammatory ectatic corneal dystrophy, characterized by corneal thinning and increased curvature with central or paracentral tapered protrusion. Such changes in corneal morphology induce irregular astigmatism and myopia, resulting in visual acuity impairment. This report assesses cases in which keratoconus is not an absolute disabling condition for civil aviation pilots. METHODS: Six cases of keratoconus in active pilots are presented. This report includes cases which were treated with crosslinking therapy and even corneal transplantation. In such

Application of an empowerment model to improve civility in nursing education.

Incivility within nursing education presents clear challenges to both students and faculty. The consequences of incivility extend beyond the educational process and into practice, thereby creating an urgent need for a framework that can guide faculty in the efforts to improve and maintain civility in nursing education. This article reviews the complex problem of incivility in nursing education and utilizes evidence in the application of an empowerment model (Worrell et al., 1996) as a framework to set the standard of civility and one that will guide intervention in the unfortunate event that i

The "army itch:" a dermatological mystery of the American Civil War.

The army itch was a chronic, severely pruritic dermatosis which first appeared among soldiers and some civilians early in the American Civil War (1861-1865). As the war progressed, so did army itch, becoming epidemic in the Potomac Valley of Maryland in 1862 and in Virginia in 1864. Immediately after the war, civilian cases traceable to contact with returning soldiers focused attention on the disorder, but the postwar outbreaks were short-lived and the army itch disappeared by the end of 1867. The origin of army itch eluded medical observers of the time, though many considered epidemic scabies

The post-war public health effects of civil conflict.

Civilian suffering from civil war extends well beyond the period of active warfare. We examine longer-term effects in a cross-national analysis of World Health Organization data on death and disability broken down by age, gender, and type of disease or condition. We find substantial long-term effects, even after controlling for several other factors. We estimate that the additional burden of death and disability incurred in 1999 alone, from the indirect and lingering effects of civil wars in the years 1991-1997, was nearly double the number incurred directly and immediately from all wars in 19

Aphakia and artificial lens implants in the civil airman population.

The Federal Aviation Administration allows civilian airmen with aphakia to fly with waivered certificates. This study analyzes, in the civil airman population, the distribution of aphakia and intraocular lens (I.O.L.) implant by type (unilateral, bilateral), class of airman medical certificate, and gender, for a 4-year period (1982-85). Medical records were individually evaluated for all certified airmen who were carrying FAA-specific codes for the pathology categories during the study period. The prevalence of both aphakia and I.O.L. increased most for bilateral type and second-class certific

Drug abuse during the Civil War (1861-1865).

The Civil War (1861-1865) has long been blamed as the catalyst for the spread of drug addiction in America. This paper attempts to examine this hypothesis through an extensive review of pertinent literature, and to clarify misconceptions concerning addiction problems associated with the war.

Migraine in the cradle of civilization: Evaluating ancient Mesopotamian texts through the lens of ICHD-3.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a neurological disorder with well-established diagnostic criteria. In its current formulation, migraine is a modern-day diagnosis, whereas descriptions consistent with migraine may date back to ancient civilizations. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether symptoms consistent with migraine without aura, as defined by criteria of ICHD-3, are present in cuneiform medical texts from ancient Mesopotamia. METHODS: A total of 37 Akkadian-language cuneiform medical texts dated between the second and first millennia bce were analyzed. Texts containing references to…

The impact of Water Ecological Civilization City Pilot on urban green innovation: the case of China.

As an essential part of ecological civilization, water ecological civilization has significant influence on the green and sustainable development of cities. Under the background of China's Water Ecological Civilization City Pilot (WECCP), based on data from 275 cities in China from 2007 to 2019 by using the difference-in-differences (DID) model, we empirically analyzed the influence of the WECCP establishment on urban green innovation and explored the impact mechanism in depth using a mediating effect model, which aimed to verify whether the "Porter hypothesis" holds true in China. The result …
