[The occurrence of the cleft lip and/or palate in cleft-twins].

UNLABELLED: Twin pregnancies are associated with an increased risk of congenital malformation, illness and higher incidence of newborns duri … cal likeness. Twin-siblings who had cleft anomalies, always had cleft lip and palate or an isolated cleft palate. RESULTS: The outcome showed that twins were not a subject to increased or decreased risk of cleft anomalies. Moreover, clefts did not increase the risk of twin-siblings labour. The hypothesis that a monozygotic twin pregnancy is a factor of increa …

Facial balance in cleft lip and palate. II. Cleft lip and palate and secondary deformities.

The cleft abnormality is the cause of underdevelopment and subsequent loss of function. Primary cleft surgery and surgery to correct the secondary deformities of previous non-functional repair should aim to restore normal anatomy and physiology, with an emphasis on muscle reconstruction of the lip and soft palate if normal facial development is to be encouraged.

Association between palatal index and cleft palate repair outcomes in patients with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate.

IMPORTANCE This study evaluates a technique to estimate cleft severity and tissue hypoplasia in patients with cleft palate. Current classifications are limited to the morphologic characteristics of the clefts. A new classification is proposed in relation to the palatal index, which allows more individualized surgical attention for the cleft palate. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship of palatal index and cleft palate repair surgical outcomes (palatal fistula and velopharyngeal insufficiency) in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Retrospective st…

The Relationship between the Type of Cleft and Nasal Air Emission in Speech of Children with Cleft Palate or Cleft Lip and Palate.

BACKGROUND: Cleft palate, due to damage of the soft palate, leads to dysfunction, i.e., inappropriate closure of the velopharynx during speech production, thus resulting in velopharyngeal insufficiency which characterises with hypernasal speech and nasal air loss/emission during speech production. AIM: To establish the relationship between the type of cleft according to the Veau classification and the degree of nasal air emission in the speech of patients with cleft using auditory-visual perceptual assessment procedures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of 40 patients with irregular speech aged…

Craniofacial cephalometric morphology in six-year-old girls with submucous cleft palate and isolated cleft palate.

Ninety-three girls with cleft palate (53 submucous cleft palate (SMCP) and 40 isolated cleft palate (ICP)), mean age 6.2 years (range 5.5-7.5), were compared retrospectively from lateral cephalograms. Forty-three patients with SMCP had had surgical treatment at the mean age of 3.4 years (range 0.9-6.8), 10 of the SMCP patients were unoperated. Twenty-six patients with ICP had clefts of the hard and soft palate, and 14 had clefts of the soft palate only. Palatal closure of ICP had been done at the mean age of 1.5 years (range 1.0-2.1). The skeletal craniofacial morphology was similar in SMCP an…

Soft tissue chondroma of hard palate associated with cleft palate.

Soft tissue chondroma of palate is very rare. It has never been reported in a cleft palate patient. We report a case of 22-year-old male who came with asymptomatic swelling on the palate since birth, along with complete cleft of secondary palate. He had symptoms related to cleft palate only, i.e., nasal regurgitation and speech abnormalities. Swelling was excised and the cleft palate was repaired. Histopathological examination revealed chondroma of the palate. The patient had no recurrence after 2 years of follow-up.

[Preliminary study of closing cleft of soft palate at an early age for complete cleft palate].

OBJECTIVE: The aim is to introduce the method closing the soft palate at an early age in order to produce better speech and lessen interruption to the development of maxilla. METHODS: Clinical data of 37 cases with treated cleft were preliminarily analyzed. Some dental casts were measured. RESULTS: 1. No complications of anaesthesia and surgery. Except 2 cases whose soft palates were split after surgery were observed as they were coughing. 2. A reduction in the width of the hard palate cleft was noticed. CONCLUSION: Closing the soft palate at an early age is possible and safe. It shows that
