We report the sublethal effects of ultraviolet A (UVA) on Enterobacter cloacae in comparison with those produced in Escherichia coli. UVA-induced sublethal effects were investigated in either bacterial membrane and at tRNA level. Limited dependence on oxygen concentration for photoinduced inhibition of biochemical membrane functions and low levels of oxidative damage during the irradiation period were found in En. cloacae. Hydrocolpos presenting at birth in a neonate with a cloacal malformation may lead to massive distension, with compression of adjacent structures. At times, the hydrocolpos requires urgent drainage. Upper digestive tract of the pigeon (Columba livia) is well known as a reservoir for different species of Cryptococcus, but lower portions are not so frequently studied. Persistent cloaca (PC) is the most intricate anorectal malformation. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is safe for hepatic, renal, splenic, vascular, and intracavitary assessment in children, but it is little applied for cloacal malformation. Our results demonstrate that CEUS can not only display the uterine, vagina, bladder, urethra, rectum, and rectovaginal fistula, but also measure the length of the common channel, bladder neck to the common channel, and distal urethra to the perineum. To our knowledge this may be the first report of preoperative evaluation by CEUS in an infant with PC.

Persistent cloaca is characterized by a common vestibule connected to the bladder, uterus, and rectum and a single perineal orifice to the exterior. Treatment can involve vaginal reconstruction with sigmoid/descending colon. We report a case of an 8-year-old girl who, as an infant, underwent vaginoplasty using sigmoid colon for persistent cloaca and developed a fulminant colitis that also affected the colonic neovagina 2 years after her reconstruction.

Persistent cloaca is a rare urogenital anomaly that can pose significant challenges for adequate diagnosis and management. We describe the case of an infant girl with a cloacal malformation, having a single perineal orifice and an accessory phallic urethra, who presented with ambiguous genitalia at birth. The distal part of the accessory phallic urethra was used to create a mucosa-lined vestibule as a part of the total urogenital sinus mobilization. This technical maneuver allowed a more natural looking, and possibly functioning, vaginal introitus, improving the final cosmetic result.

The beta-lactamase activity with ampicillin (A) and cephalothin (Ce) as substrate was examined in 28 strains of Ent. cloacae and 24 strains of C. freundii by a micro-iodometric-(MIA) and an ultraviolet assay (UVA).
