Cogan syndrome presenting after uneventful laser in situ keratomileusis.

We report 2 cases of Cogan syndrome that developed after uneventful laser in situ keratomileusis. In the first case, an 8-month postoperative biomicroscopy revealed bilateral interface neovascularization, white intrastromal deposits, and anterior chamber cells and flare. In the second case, white cell infiltration and neovascularization were observed in the deep corneal stroma of the patient's right eye 18 months postoperatively. Based on these observations, which are consistent with typical interstitial keratitis, and the patients' history of Meniere-like disease, such as vertigo and mild hea…

Association of Cogan-Reese syndrome, exfoliation syndrome, and secondary open-angle glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To present a case with co-existence of Cogan-Reese syndrome and exfoliation syndrome. CASE REPORT: A 72-year-old Caucasian woman presented for consultation due to uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) of the right eye. Clinical examination revealed the presence of Cogan-Reese syndrome and exfoliation syndrome OD. This eye exhibited elevated IOP, open anterior chamber angle, advanced glaucomatous optic nerve head damage, and severe glaucomatous visual field loss. The left eye was completely normal without IOP elevation or visual field damage. To our knowledge this is the first case

An overlap syndrome with features of atypical Cogan syndrome and Wegener's granulomatosis.

A 48 year old women developed serous otitis, scleritis, myalgia, vertigo, polyneuropathy, crescentic glomerulonephritis, general cerebral dysrythmia, hilar adenopathy, and retroorbital granulomatous inflammation. Pulmonary manifestations were absent and antibodies against neutrophilic cytoplasmic antigens (ANCA) could not be detected. The clinical picture was classified as an overlap syndrome with features of both atypical Cogan syndrome and Wegener's granulomatosis. The patient responded to treatment with high dose corticosteroids and pulse cyclophosphamide.

A Case of Bilateral Retinal Vasculitis in Atypical Cogan Syndrome.

Cogan syndrome (CS) is a rare chronic inflammatory disease characterized by ocular and inner ear inflammation. Well-known ocular manifestations include non-syphilitic interstitial keratitis (IK); however, some cases are not associated with IK. Inner ear symptoms include sensorineural hearing loss, rotatory vertigo, and tinnitus, which can become irreversible without timely treatment. Therefore, early and appropriate diagnosis and therapeutic intervention are important. However, due to its rarity, few physicians have encountered CS and early diagnosis is difficult. In this report, we present th…

Cogan Syndrome: A Case Study and Review of the Literature.

Cogan syndrome is an autoimmune disease characterized by vestibular symptoms, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, and inflammatory ocular manifestations, which may be accompanied by systemic vasculitis. We herein present the case of a patient with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss who presented with pain over her cochlear implantation incision site. She was later found to have evidence of ocular disease and underlying vasculitis leading to a diagnosis of Cogan syndrome.

Cochlear implantation in patients with Cogan syndrome: long-term results.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of patients with Cogan syndrome (CS) who have undergone cochlear implantation. Subjects consisted of 12 cochlear implant users with a typical form of CS. Measures included word and sentence recognition scores. The speech recognition performance was rated before cochlear implantation and at 1 and 5 years after implantation. The speech materials were presented in quiet only condition. The mean 12-month post-operative word and sentence recognition scores were 91.4 and 93.1%, respectively. Five years after implantation, the group m…

[Retrospective and prospective studies of patients with Cogan I syndrome].

Since August 1987 we documented the course of three patients with Cogan-I-Syndrome (CS) (interstitial keratitis and audio vestibular disorder). The patients (2 female, 1 male) received oral protease therapy in addition to the corticosteroids. Under oral treatment with proteases the corticosteroid therapy could be discontinued. Regression of inflammatory reaction and improvement of hearing was encountered in all patients. In two cases alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) serum levels were profoundly reduced, reaching normal range during therapy. Concomitant to the raise of this parameter improvement of he

Anterior STEMI in a 25-year-old with Cogan syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Cogan syndrome (CS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder primarily affecting young adults. It is characterized by interstitial keratitis, vestibuloauditory dysfunction, and, rarely, systemic vasculitis and aortitis. In this case report, we present a rare instance of a young male with anterior ST-elevation myocardial infarction in the context of aneurysmal coronary vessels and proximal occlusion of the left anterior descending artery. This case underscores the importance of recognizing cardiac risk factors in the setting of CS, as they can be life-threatening. Regular follow up is nec…

CONCLUSION: Nivolumab could potentially be linked to an immune-related condition resembling Cogan syndrome. In cases involving patients with a complex condition necessitating nivolumab treatment, the use of topical and/or local corticosteroids or intravenous immunoglobulin, might constitute the sole viable treatment options.

Iris nevus (Cogan-Reese) syndrome. A cause of unilateral glaucoma.

Fourteen patients (ten women, four men) with iris nevus (Cogan-Reese) syndrome, all having unilateral glaucoma, were studied clinically. Many had corneal edema, and all had changes in the iris consisting of one or more of the following: iris whorls or nodules or both, atrophy of iris stroma, heterochromia (the darker iris usually involved), or ectropion uveae. All had peripheral anterior synechias. Material for histological study was available from ten patients and showed a nonmalignant diffuse nevus of the anterior surface of the iris. An overgrowth of endothelium and Descemet membrane extend

A Pediatric Case of Cogan's Syndrome With Internal Otitis.

Cogan's syndrome is characterized by ocular symptoms and auditory vestibular dysfunction. Auditory vestibular dysfunction in Cogan's syndrome is believed to be similar to Ménière's disease, but the cause is not known in detail. We present the case of a 10-year-old boy with Cogan's syndrome. The patient had panuveitis, bilateral hearing loss, and bilateral vestibular dysfunction. MRI revealed no evidence of endolymphatic hydrops, which is a cause of Ménière's disease, and enhanced contrast effects on the bilateral cochlear and vestibular apparatus. The caloric test, the video-head impulse test,

Cogan's Syndrome: Clinical Presentations and Update on Treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cogan's syndrome (CS) is a rare systemic vasculitis that can severely affect vision and hearing, which may also have significant systemic effects. Early recognition of this autoimmune disorder and intervention can minimize disabling and irreversible damage. RECENT FINDINGS: This article will review the varying clinical presentations of CS and emerging information of systemic disease associated with CS. We will also review recently published promising treatment outcomes using immune modulating medications. As our framework for recognizing the markers of CS and the associated
