Six cases of congenital vaginal atresia are described. Three of these patients had cryptomenorrhea while the other 3 had severe coital difficulties. On the basis of sexuological examination of 152 married women with pelvic inflammatory disease it is proposed to use the term of dyspareunia in patients who have pains during coitus and who are dissatisfied with the course of sexual intercourse. For probands who had unpleasant or even painful feelings during coitus but were in 93% of cases satisfied with sexual life, it would be suitable to use the term of algopareunia.

The following is a discussion of dyspareunia and its role as an aid to diagnosing pelvic neoplasms. The great majority of cases of dysparenia are psychosomatic in origin, and in a large proportion of the remaining cases, painful coitus is an indicator of benign problems. Nevertheless, painful coitus is a symptom which requires careful pelvic examination to rule out the possibility of pelvic neoplasm and to discover treatable causes of dyspareunia.

ANSWER: Teen pregnancy is a substantial problem. Several emergency contraceptives exist, including the combined pill, the progesterone-only pill, and copper-bearing intrauterine devices. The role of surgery in the treatment of impotence has greatly increased during the last 5 years. The recognition and surgical correction of those mechanical derangements of the penis that prevent coitus have enabled many men to resume or commence intercourse. Men with irreversible impotence usually find it possible to resume coitus following the insertion of a Silastic penile prosthesis. The need to diagnose organic impotence has in turn stimulated the development of new diagnostic techniques and these have increased our knowledge of the pathophysiology of erectile function.

A survey of reproductive system problems was conducted in a large group of lesbians (n = 1,921) and bisexual women (n = 424) in a nonclinical setting.
