Colony-stimulating factors in inflammation and autoimmunity.

Although they were originally defined as haematopoietic-cell growth factors, colony-stimulating factors (CSFs) have been shown to have additional functions by acting directly on mature myeloid cells. Recent data from animal models indicate that the depletion of CSFs has therapeutic benefit in many inflammatory and/or autoimmune conditions and as a result, early-phase clinical trials targeting granulocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor and macrophage colony-stimulating factor have now commenced. The distinct biological features of CSFs offer opportunities for specific targeting, but with

Josephine Baker: psychoanalysis and the colonial fetish.

This paper traces an intricate path connecting racial fantasy, aesthetic judgment, and the larger cultural problem of inter-subjective recognition. In particular, the author examines the theme of fetishism, both sexual and racial, in a Western historical, colonial context, in order to unravel a set of disturbances that cohere around the racial fetish then and now. Taking the figure of an entertainment icon of the 1920s, Josephine Baker, as a case study, the author shows how the imagination of the colonizing white male was both articulated and disrupted by Baker as a ready-made representation o

The healing power of colony-stimulating factors.

This session applied an interactive case study format to explore the healing properties of colony-stimulating factors (CSFs). Diarrhea, oral mucositis, wound healing, and Crohn disease are four specific areas in which CSFs have had success. The presenters also covered the signs and symptoms of conditions for which CSFs may be helpful.

Colony-stimulating factors. A panel discussion.

One of the most exciting recent developments in cancer-related research has been the discovery and understanding of colony-stimulating factors. There is now a general optimism that these factors will be used in the treatment of a variety of solid tumors, lymphomas, and leukemias, as well as in the treatment of patients who are immunocompromised or undergoing bone marrow transplantation. We have gathered a distinguished panel of experts to discuss the current status of this rapidly moving field.

[Encephalitozoon cuniculi in a rabbit-breeding colony].

A case of Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection in a rabbitry is reported. After the introduction of new rabbits in 1984, problems arose accompanied by serious losses among rabbits of all ages. Affected animals showed muscular weakness, emaciation, polydipsia and polyuria and died within various periods. Some of the affected animals also showed neurological symptoms. When two animals were examined at autopsy lesions typical of encephalitozoonis were observed: small granulomas in the brain and chronic interstitial nephritis associated with tubular degeneration. Encephalitozoon cuniculi was identif

Spontaneous erythroid colony formation in erythrocytosis.

Erythroid colony formation from the bone marrow and blood of 30 patients with erythrocytosis has been studied. Seventeen patients formed spontaneous erythroid colonies. They included patients with polycythaemia vera (PV) and 4 patients who did not quite fulfil the Polycythemia Vera Study Group criteria for PV, but had suggestive evidence of a myeloproliferative disorder. Thirteen patients did not form spontaneous colonies. They included patients with secondary polycythaemia, patients with normal total red cell volume and patients with absolute pure erythrocytosis of unknown origin. All patient

Colonial modern skeletal change in the U.S.A.

Eighty-two people dating from 1975 to 1879 compared with 182 modern middle-class White and Black skeletons test the myths of radical changes produced by improved diet, less disease, and nineteenth century immigration. Longevity increases and health and growth improvement is clearest in reduced juvenile deaths (census data) and deepening of true pelvis. Stature increase is minimal (though seventeenth century Londoners and modern West Africans are shorter than Colonial to Modern Americans); teeth deteriorate and for cultural reasons fractures increase. Clavicles and forearms elongate. From Old t

Growth of B-lymphocyte colonies in vitro.

In semisolid agar cultures containing mercaptoethanol, cells from the spleen, lymph nodes, marrow, peritoneal cavity, thoracic duct, and blood of normal mice generated clusters and colonies of up to 3,000 cells. Colony numbers and growth were markedly enhanced by the addition of sheep red cells. The frequency of colony-forming cells in the spleen or lymph nodes was 0.5-2.0%, and cluster forming cells were approximately five times more numerous. The mononuclear cells comprising these colonies had the electronmicroscopic morphology of immature lymphoid and plasma cells. The majority of the cells

Decoding of miR-7-5p in Colony Forming Unit-Hill Colonies as a Biomarker of Subclinical Cardiovascular Disease-A MERIT Study.

Colony forming unit-Hill (CFU-Hill) colonies were established to serve as a sensitive biomarker for vascular health. In animals, the overexpression of miR-7-5p was shown to be pro-atherogenic and associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. In a MERIT study, we aimed to explore the role of miR-7-5p expression in CFU-Hill colonies in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and the effect of metformin in subclinical CVD. The expression of miR-7-5p in CFU-Hill colonies in 29 T1DM subjects without CVD and 20 healthy controls (HC) was measured. Metformin was administered to T1DM subjects fo

Clozapine-Associated Agranulocytosis Treatment With Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor/Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Clozapine is associated with hematological abnormalities, notably neutropenia, which may progress to agranulocytosis. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) have been used to reduce the frequency and duration of clozapine-associated neutropenia. This review aims to explore the use, efficacy, and tolerability of these cytokines in the treatment of clozapine-associated agranulocytosis. METHODS/PROCEDURES: We conducted a systematic review of published interventional and observational studies, case series, an

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) and granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) in Behçet's disease.

Increases in the number and activity of peripheral polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) is often found in Behçet's disease (BD), indicating that PMN may play an important role in the pathogenesis of this disorder. It has recently been reported that G-CSF and GM-CSF, a family of hematopoietic growth factors, enhance PMN activity. To explore the role of these two CSFs in BD, we first examined the chemotactic response of PMNs to these CSFs by performing a polarization assay. PMN response to G-CSF in BD patients was lower than that in controls, while PMN response to GM-CSF was similar in patients

Differential effects of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in children with severe congenital neutropenia.

Severe congenital neutropenia (SCN) is a disorder of myelopoiesis characterized by severe neutropenia secondary to a maturational arrest at the level of promyelocytes. We treated five patients with SCN with recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (rhGM-CSF) for 42 days and subsequently, between 1 and 3 months later, with rhG-CSF for 142 days. The objective was to evaluate the safety and ability of these factors to elicit a neutrophil response. rhGM-CSF was administered at a dose of 3 to 30 micrograms/kg/d (30 to 60 minutes, intravenously). In all patients, a specific
