Infectious Risks of Traveling Abroad.

A popular leisure activity, international travel can be associated with some infections. The most common travel-related illnesses appear to be gastrointestinal, dermatologic, respiratory, and systemic febrile syndromes. The pretravel medical consultation includes immunizations, malaria chemoprophylaxis, self-treatment for traveler's diarrhea, and advice on the prevention of a myriad of other infectious causes including dengue, chikungunya, rickettsiosis, leptospirosis, schistosomiasis, and strongyloidiasis. Travel to locations experiencing outbreaks such as Ebola virus disease, Middle East res

Fungal diseases: an evolving public health challenge.

The emergence of new fungal pathogens and the resurgence of mycotic diseases that had previously been uncommon is a serious and growing public health problem. This review examines the factors involved in the emergence or re-emergence of several mycotic diseases, including coccidioidomycosis and cryptococcosis, over the past two decades. New approaches to prevention and control are also discussed.

Structures, processes and outcomes for establishing a statewide infection prevention and control service for Queensland, Australia.

Healthcare-associated infections, communicable diseases and antimicrobial resistance pose significant threats to the health and safety of people globally. In the Commonwealth of Australia, the responsibility for infection prevention and control governance at population levels is shared principally between state and federal governments, which work in concert to reduce the risk and impact of communicable disease within both healthcare and community settings. The federated nature of Australia with separation of powers between the jurisdictions and national government has led to variation in how t

Communicable diseases in northwest Syria in the context of protracted armed conflict and earthquakes.

The earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria in February, 2023, have caused further devastation in northwest Syria-an area already affected by protracted armed conflict, mass forced displacement, and inadequate health and humanitarian provision. The earthquake damaged infrastructure supporting water, sanitation, and hygiene, and health-care facilities. The disruptions to epidemiological surveillance and ongoing disease control measures resulting from the earthquake will accelerate and expand ongoing and new outbreaks of many communicable diseases including measles, cholera, tuberculosis, and leishmani

Short communication: Strengthening sub-national communicable disease surveillance in a remote Pacific Island country by adapting a successful African outbreak surveillance model.

Successful communicable disease surveillance depends on effective bidirectional information flow between clinicians at the periphery and communicable disease control units at regional, national and global levels. Resource-poor countries often struggle to establish and maintain the crucial link with the periphery. A simple syndrome-based outbreak surveillance system initially developed and evaluated in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa was adapted for the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu. Eight syndromes were identified for surveillance: acute flaccid paralysis (poliomyelitis), profuse watery di…

From plague to MERS: coordinating Australia's response to emerging infectious diseases.

Rapid international travel times and the arrival of new and unexpected infectious disease threats have demonstrated that, for effective communicable disease control, Australia's response needs to be flexible and coordinated. This paper summarises how our public health and clinical systems would respond to a case of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus and our responsibility under the International Health Regulations to notify the World Health Organization (WHO). It also describes the processes undertaken by WHO when it declares that a disease outbreak is a Public Health Emergenc…

Temporal analysis of non-communicable diseases and NCD-HIV/AIDS comorbidity in Malawi: A 4-year retrospective study 2020-2022.

OBJECTIVE: Non-communicable diseases are on the increase in the Sub-Saharan region, which is also the epicentre of HIV/AIDS. There is limited published data on trends and forecasts of the comorbidity of non-communicable diseases and HIV/AIDS in low- and middle-income countries. Hence, the aim of the study was to examine current trends and forecasts for non-communicable diseases and non-communicable disease-HIV/AIDS comorbidity. METHODS: Data on 30,686 patients from 2019 to 2022 were extracted from the non-communicable diseases Mastercards, from 70 health facilities in Malawi, using a form des

Carbohydrates in Vaccine Development.

Despite advances in the development of new vaccines, there are still some diseases with no vaccine solutions. Therefore, further efforts are required to more comprehensively discern the different antigenic components of these microorganisms on a molecular level. This review summarizes advancement in the development of new carbohydrate-based vaccines. Following traditional vaccine counterparts, the carbohydrate-based vaccines introduced a new approach in fighting infectious diseases. Carbohydrates have played various roles in the development of carbohydrate-based vaccines, which are described i

[What's new in travel medicine?].

The threats for the health of travellers come often from the emergence or the re-emergence of old and new infectious diseases. In South America an important increase of the number of cases of yellow fever was reported. On the island of Borneo a new species of Plasmodium pathogenic for humans has been identified. After the Chikungunya epidemic that affected the islands of the Indian Ocean, the virus has caused new epidemic foci and this even in Europe. The first World Rabies Day reminded us that this disease still kills a large number of persons in countries with limited resources. Rabies can a

Curvature in infectious disease network: A metric for vaccination and control.

We investigate the geometric structure of evolving infectious-disease networks using a notion of node curvature, which is based on the heat-kernel expansion that naturally extends to edges. Applying this measure to networks reconstructed from infection counts whose degree and strength distributions transition toward a steady power-law, we observe a corresponding transition in curvature. We relate the latter to an underlying hyperbolic space and reveal a phase transition in the network's effective temperature. We further compare our curvature measure with existing definitions in the literature,

Trends of vaccine-preventable diseases in Afghanistan from the Disease Early Warning System, 2009-2015.

BACKGROUND: Afghanistan's public health system was neglected during decades of military and civil conflict, and trends in infectious disease occurrence remain poorly characterized. This study examines cyclical and long-term trends of six vaccine-preventable diseases: pneumonia, diarrhea, meningitis, typhoid, measles, and acute viral hepatitis. METHODS: Using weekly data collected between 2009 and 2015 through Afghanistan's Disease Early Warning System, we calculated monthly case counts, and fit a Poisson regression with a Fourier transformation for seasonal cycles and dummy variables for year

The expanded programme on immunization: a lasting legacy of smallpox eradication.

Since the mid-1970s, the widespread establishment and implementation of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) has led to remarkable achievements in controlling vaccine preventable diseases worldwide. Today, more children than ever are being reached with immunization; interruption of poliomyelitis transmission has occurred in most countries; mortality due to measles, tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis has been reduced to record low levels. In addition, increasing numbers of vaccines are being used for infants and older age persons, such as vaccines against hepatitis A and hepatitis B, Hae
