Influence of climate and geography on the occurrence of Legionella and amoebae in composting facilities.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Legionnaires' disease (LD) in southern Switzerland is three times higher than in northern Switzerland. Climatic and geographic factors may be potential causes for this difference. We studied the prevalence of Legionella and free-living amoebae (FLA) in compost and bioaerosol in two Swiss regions to understand the role of climate and geography in the transmission of LD. We also tried to investigate whether or not compost storage duration would influence the composition of Legionella and FLA communities. RESULTS: A larger proportion of compost heaps in facilities fro

Reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethene by two compost samples with different maturity.

This study sets up microcosms using two types of compost samples, bagasse/manure compost, and yard-trimming compost with different maturity, to evaluate their capacity for reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethene (PCE). The experimental results show that less matured compost samples could reduce 300 μM of PCE to ethene within 180 days of incubation. Decreasing initial PCE concentration and removing dissolved oxygen from the solution could enhance reducing efficiency. The solution remains near neutral pH throughout the experiment, and ethene emerged when the redox potential dropped to belo

Dose effects of Mg and PO4 sources on the composting of swine manure.

A series of experiments were performed to study the effects of magnesium (Mg) and phosphate (PO(4)) addition on the decomposition of organic matter and struvite formation during the composting of swine manure. In these experiments, different amounts of magnesium chloride (MgCl(2)) with or without PO(4) salts were added to the samples, and the optimum molar ratio of Mg and PO(4) to the total nitrogen (TN) in swine manure was studied. The temperature profiles revealed that no organic matter was decomposed when 0.1M or more Mg and PO(4) salts were added and that when 0.05 M ratio of Mg and PO(4) …

Structural transformation strategy of lignin to humic acid during biological acclimated composting.

Humic acid (HA) generated during straw-based fertilization is a key component in restoring the quality of black soil. However, strategies for manipulating lignin structure to regulate HA formation during acclimated composting remain unclear. In this study, rice straw (RS), willow branches (TB), and pine needles (PN), each characterized by distinct lignin structures, were composted to investigate the microbial conversion pathways from lignin to HA. Four representative functional groups in lignin were identified: aryl-ether CO bonds, side-chain CH groups, dimeric OH groups, and benzene-ring skel…

Iron-Amended Pleurotus citrinopileatus Residue Composting: Lignocellulose Degradation and Microbial Functional Potential.

Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) from Pleurotus citrinopileatus cultivation is a lignocellulose-rich by-product whose efficient composting is hindered by lignocellulose recalcitrance and slow humification. This study compared the effects of Fe3O4-based magnetic powder (MP), Fe0 beads (IB), and Fe2O3-rich crude iron ore (RI) with those of an unamended control during 30-day aerobic co-composting with chicken manure. Physicochemical characterization and metagenomic sequencing were combined to assess compost maturity, lignocellulose degradation, humic substance transformation, microbial succession, …

Biochar modulates microbial carbon metabolism to mitigate global warming potential during composting.

Carbon loss via CO2 and CH4 emissions reduces the organic carbon available for humification, which may negatively affect compost quality while exacerbating environmental pollution. Herein, this study investigated the impacts of biochar (e.g., rice husk biochar (RHB) and sawdust biochar (SDB) as composting additives on CO2 and CH4 emissions, as well as the underlying microbial mechanisms. The results demonstrated that, comparing to the control (CK), RHB and SDB reduced cumulative CO2 emissions by 11.38% and 16.30%, respectively (both P < 0.05), whereas they increased CH4 emissions by 45.35% (P …

Biodegradation pathway of organophosphate esters in sludge composting implications for environmental safety.

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are emerging contaminants of growing concern, and there is limited information about the bacterial transformation during sludge composting. In this study, under the stress of 100 mg/kg ∑7OPEs, three bacterial strains with degradation capabilities-Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus licheniformis, and Ralstonia pickettii-were screened and isolated, and a synthetic bacterial community (SynCom) was constructed. During 55 days sludge composting, the concentration of ∑7OPEs decreased significantly. In CK, TnBP degraded the fastest (> 90%). For the exogenous OPE-added groups st…

Gaseous carbon dioxide removal from composting of biomass and cotton textile waste.

The carbon conversion efficiency of composting with food, yard, and cotton waste is analyzed herein. We demonstrate the ability of air-aerated and oxygen-aerated composting reactors to achieve carbon conversion efficiencies between 23 and 60 % and cotton mass degradation between 37 and 99 %. This carbon conversion efficiency is equivalent to removing 0.32 - 0.97 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of dry biomass waste processed, which compares favorably to the carbon removal potential of anaerobic digestion (0.04 - 0.40 t-CO2/t-biomass) and hydrothermal liquefaction (0.49 - 0.62 t-CO2/t-biomass), two BiCR…

Optimizing the early-stage of composting process emissions - artificial intelligence primary tests.

Although composting has many advantages in treating organic waste, many problems and challenges are still associated with emissions, like NH3, CO and H2S, as well as greenhouse gases such as CO2. One promising approach to enhancing composting conditions is using novel analytical methods based on artificial intelligence. To predict and optimize the emissions (CO, CO2, H2S, NH3) during the early-stage of composting process machine learning (ML) models were utilized. Data about emissions from laboratory composting with compost's biochar with different incubation (50, 60, 70 °C) and biochar doses …

Improved humification and Cr(VI) immobilization by CaO2 and Fe3O4 during composting.

The current research studied how Fe3O4 nanomaterials (NMs) and CaO2 affect humification and Cr(VI) immobilization and reduction during the composting of oil-tea Camellia meal and Cr-contaminated soil. The results showed that Fe3O4 NMs and CaO2 successfully construct a Fenton-like reaction in this system. The excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor (EEM-PARAFAC) demonstrated that this Fenton-like treatment increased the generation of humic acids and accelerated the humification. Meantime, RES-Cr increased by 5.91 % and Cr(VI) decreased by 16.36 % in the treatment group with CaO2 and Fe3O4 NM…
