INTRODUCTION: Condylomata acuminata are the most common sexually transmitted disease worldwide. They are not usually a serious problem, but it causes emotional distress to patient and physician alike because of its marked tendency to recurrence. The presence of anogenital warts mandates treatment, also for potential degeneration of the lesions.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A review of the literature has been performed to analyze proposed treatments for anogenital warts.
EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: Many treatments have been employed. They include cytotoxic agents, immunomodulation and physical ablation. The…

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 59-year-old woman had for 3 weeks been suffering from painful, moist skin changes on the external genitals, for 3 months having noticed vegetations in the anogenital and perineal region. She had been fatigued and lacking in energy since then. Her last gynecological examination had been 20 years ago. Examination of the skin on admission revealed extensive plaque and cauliflower-like warts and large areas of maceration in the anogenital region, the labia and perineum, with large areas of maceration. Nodules were clearly palpable in the left labium majora: the in

The medico-legal significance of anogenital warts as a marker of sexual abuse in children is unclear. This review article presents three case reports and discusses the possible modes of transmission of papilloma virus in children. Although genital warts can indicate sexual abuse, non-sexual transmission may also occur.

Fifty-two consecutive patients with condylomata acuminata were treated with CO2-laser under general anesthesia. In many of the cases, previous conventional treatment had failed. The effectiveness of the treatment was found to be between 75 and 87%. It caused few complication or complains. Eighty-three percent of the patients expressed satisfaction with the treatment. Laser treatment of condylomata acuminata is an alternative to conventional treatment in tractable cases and in cases where conventional methods are contra-indicated.

The effectiveness of the carbon dioxide laser was evaluated in the treatment of penile, anorectal, and urethral condylomata acuminata in 40 men. All but six cases of urethral condylomata were prior conventional treatment failures. Postlaser follow-up ranged between one and two years, with an average of 16 months. No patients were lost to follow-up. Postlaser recurrence rates were 7.5%. No postoperative complications occurred in this series. Carbon dioxide laser is highly successful for treating persistent and/or extensive urogenital and anal condylomata in the male patient.

5 cases of condylomata acuminata with pigmented papular lesions were examined. By light microscopy, the pigmented papules showed benign basaloid cell proliferation and papillomatosis with only a few vacuolizations of the keratinocytes. Although mitotic figures increased in number, cellular atypia and disorderly arrangement were rarely observed. Electron microscopy revealed only benign epidermal cell proliferation. From these findings, the pigmented papules may be regarded as an initial stage or a forme fruste of condylomata acuminata. These papules are clinically very similar to the lesions of…

Until recently, condyloma acuminatum has been considered to be a benign growth with no malignant potential. The histologically similar, yet clinically different, giant condyloma acuminatum (Buschke-Lowenstein tumor) has been defined as a mass with downward growth that has no histologic malignant changes, although the clinical course may be malignant. A review of the literature yielded 65 cases of malignant degeneration of this type of tumor and supports the concept that either condyloma acuminatum or the Buschke-Lowenstein tumor may precede or be associated with squamous cell carcinoma. A pati

Cluster condyloma is currently one of the sexually transmitted diseases of higher incidence. The most common sites for condyloma in males are the balanopreputial sulcus, frenulum and the glans' mucosa. Associated to penis condyloma there can be urethral lesions in 5% of patients which in 80% of cases develop less than 3 cm from the meatus. This paper presents a series of 14 cases of cluster intraurethral condyloma managed by transurethral electrofulguration. The technique consists in the introduction of a coagulation probe through the urethrotome and the application of electrofulguration to th
