Development and analysis of 49 perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in contact lenses using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) possess water-repellent, oil-repellent, and heat-resistant properties, making them widely used in consumer goods and industrial products. However, PFASs have been increasingly associated with health concerns, including reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruption, and thyroid disease. In 2023, the US consumer platform "Mamavation" reported organic fluorine levels ranging from 105 to 20,700 ppm in 18 contact lenses, raising concerns about the potential presence of PFASs in these products. Given the absence of established international testing

Effect of gold nanoparticles on timolol uptake and its release kinetics from contact lenses: In vitro and in vivo evaluation.

Contact lenses are ideally suited for extended drug delivery to the ocular tissues, but incorporation of any particulate system affects the critical properties of the contact lens. Timolol loading by the conventional soaking method does not significantly alter the critical properties of the contact lens. However, there are challenges of low drug loading and high burst release. This research work aimed to investigate the effect of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) on loading and its release kinetics from the contact lens using the soaking method. In one approach, GNPs were loaded into the timolol soaki

Compliance factors associated with contact lens-related dry eye.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if compliance factors are associated with contact lens-related dry eye (CLDE). METHODS: The data were derived from subject responses to a compliance survey administered in a cross-sectional study including 100 healthy, daily (nonovernight), experienced soft contact lens wearers (50 normal and 50 with CLDE). Classification into normal or CLDE groups was based on Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire scores, tear breakup time, and 2 hours difference between total and comfortable daily lens wear hours. The compliance survey queried aspects of lens care, rub and rinse practic

Novel Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone-Loaded Olopatadine HCl-Laden Doughnut Contact Lens to Treat Allergic Conjunctivitis.

Olopatadine HCl is an antiallergic drug used for the management of allergic conjunctivitis. Currently, it is delivered via eye drop solution, which is highly inefficient due to low bioavailability. Silicone contact lenses can be used to sustain the release of ophthalmic drugs. However, the presence of drug alters the optical transmittance and physical properties of the contact lens. The objective was to design a novel polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-coated olopatadine-ethyl cellulose microparticles-laden doughnut contact lens to sustained ocular delivery with limited alteration to the optical and

Management of a post-ELLKAT keratectasia with a gas permeable contact lens.

BACKGROUND: The Excimer laser keratoplasty of augmented thickness for keratoconus (ELLKAT) has been proposed for the refractive management of keratoconus. CASE REPORT: A 41-year-old man with a history of bilateral keratoconus came to the clinic for a contact lens. He had undergone an ELLKAT procedure in his right eye some months earlier in an attempt to obtain acceptable unaided vision. As the result in this eye was not positive, the surgery in the fellow eye was cancelled. On examination, I diagnosed a centrally located keratectasia (KE) in his RE. After surgery, the corneal shape presented

Treatment of corneal dellen with a large diameter soft contact lens.

A 58-year-old man presented with corneal dellen twelve days after pterygium removal on his left eye. Initial treatment with lubrication and artificial tears was unsuccessful. The fitting of a conventional contact lens was not possible because of conjuctival chemosis. Additionally the patient denied eye patching due to professional reasons. As an alternative treatment a large diameter bandage soft contact lens approved for extended wear was applied ((David Thomas Contact Lens T74/85 Extended Wear/Bandage of 18mm diameter). The next day corneal dellen had already began to retreat and four days l

Improvement of contact lens-associated dry eye disease with the use of hydrogen peroxide.

BACKGROUND: The dropout rate of contact lens users has not decreased significantly over the years. Despite continuous improvements in contact lens (CL) designs, materials and surface treatments, the number of CL users who drop out remains similar to the number of new CL users. The aim of this study is to analyse the improvement in contact lens-associated dry eye disease (CLADE), quantified with the OSDI questionnaire when changing maintenance system solution from multipurpose solution to hydrogen peroxide. METHODS: This study included contact lens users for over a year as the multipurpose sol

An adaptive drug-releasing contact lens for personalized treatment of ocular infections and injuries.

This research introduces an innovative solution to address the challenges of bacterial keratitis and alkali burns. Current treatments for bacterial keratitis and alkali burns rely on the frequent use of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. However, these approaches suffer from poor bioavailability and fluctuating concentrations, leading to limited efficacy and potential drug resistance. Our approach presents an adaptive drug-releasing contact lens responsive to reactive oxygen species (ROS) at ocular inflammation sites, synchronously releasing Levofloxacin and Diclofenac. During storag

Soft multifocal simultaneous image contact lenses: a review.

Soft multifocal simultaneous image contact lenses have boomed in recent years due to the growing number of presbyopic patients demanding visual solutions, allowing them to maintain their current standard of living. The concept of 'simultaneous image' is based on blur interpretation and/or blur tolerance of superimposed multiple images on the retina formed by various powers of a contact lens. This is the basis for a specific type of multifocal contact lens developed for the compensation of presbyopia. Manufacturers have released a great variety of soft simultaneous image lens designs to meet di

Risk Behaviors for Contact Lens-Related Eye Infections Among Adults and Adolescents - United States, 2016.

Contact lens-related eye infections, which can lead to serious outcomes, including blindness, are associated with several risk factors, including sleeping in lenses, exposing lenses to water, not adhering to replacement schedules, and reusing disinfecting solution (1). In some studies, adolescent and young adult contact lens wearers have been reported to be more likely than older adult contact lens wearers to develop eye infections (2,3) and more likely to have poor contact lens hygiene practices (2). In 2015, CDC reported the number and demographics of adult contact lens wearers in the United

Delayed hypersensitivity to thimerosal in soft contact lens wearers.

Thirty-eight patients were examined because of ocular redness, irritation, and corneal changes apparently related to soft contact lens wear. The corneal changes were transient and ranged from faint epithelial opacities to a coarse, punctate epithelial keratopathy. Solutions containing thimerosal had been used by all of the patients for lens care, and 31 responded to an ocular challenge with a thimerosal-preserved lens lubricant. Twenty-seven of these 31 also reacted to thimerosal patch testing. The 31 resumed lens wear with relief of symptoms by using unit-dose, preservative-free saline for le
