International travel is popular worldwide, yet its implications for sexual and reproductive health are not fully understood. Few studies have examined the contextual factors that shape women's sexual and contraceptive behaviors-and thus, their risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)-while traveling outside their home country. In this qualitative study, female university students with recent (n = 25) or upcoming (n = 19) travel outside the U.S. completed semi-structured interviews from October 2015 to March 2017. Transcripts were analyzed for themes related to co

BACKGROUND: Despite endorsements supporting the use of intrauterine devices (IUDs) for adolescents and young adult women (AYA), they have limited knowledge about them Male partners can influence contraceptive decisions, however their perceived knowledge about IUDs is lower than their objective knowledge. We aim to establish current AYA baseline contraceptive knowledge and attitudes so providers can better target their sexual health educational interventions.
METHODS: Females and males, aged 13 to 23 years old, from our suburban adolescent clinic, completed an anonymous survey that assessed th

The combined oral contraceptive (COC) pills, injectables, intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) and female sterilization are the most common contraceptive methods used by women. Women's choice, compliance and satisfaction with specific contraceptive methods are influenced by any impact of the method on their quality of life and sexual function. Anxiety regarding possible adverse effects of the contraceptive methods on their quality of life and sexual function is one of the common concerns. The aim of this prospective observational study was to determine the impact of the abovementioned cont

Consistent contraceptive use (CCU) is an important public health intervention for the prevention and spread of STIs, as well as unintended pregnancies and abortions, especially among female sex workers (FSWs). This study determines the prevalence and identifies factors influencing CCU among FSWs in The Gambia. Utilizing a cross-sectional study design with a snowball sampling technique, respondents were recruited from various locations within the Greater Banjul Area. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire with the Research Electronic Data Capture application. Descriptive and logist

Women in the United States, particularly African-Americans and Hispanics, are at increased risk for HIV. The female condom now offers women a potentially important option for HIV prevention, yet few efforts have been made to increase its use. To elucidate strategies to promote the use of the female condom, we conducted in-depth interviews with 62 women recruited from the four major racial/ethnic groups of the U.S. (African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic, and white). Subject recruitment took place at a family planning clinic in San Francisco during 1996-97. We identified four major types of

A female patient of child-bearing age using an intrauterine device (IUD) consulted our department for a hypogastric mass which turned out to be actinomycosis of the bladder. Antibiotic treatment resolved the infection and removal of the inflammatory mass was unwarranted since infected fistulous tracts had been observed. There appears to be a causal relationship with IUDs, as in genital actinomycosis. Due to the increasing use of contraceptive devices, we are likely to find this type of infection, which might be difficult to distinguish from malignant disease, increasingly frequent in urologic

A series of 10 instances of genital actinomycosis infection complicating the use of intrauterine contraceptive devices is recorded and its pathogenesis described. The likelihood is suggested that this complication is more frequent than is generally appreciated. A pathway of infection extending upward from the patient's anus, across the perineum, and up the vagina and cervix is suggested as the route of infection. The traumatizing effect of the device and a previously existing or intercurrent infection as additional contributing factors to the development of actinomycotic infection in the femal

OBJECTIVE: To examine current levels, current correlates of, and changes in long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) use, including intrauterine devices and implants, among females aged 15-44 years using contraception between 2008-2010 and 2011-2013 with specific attention to associations between race, income, and age and their LARC use.
METHODS: We analyzed data from two rounds of the National Survey of Family Growth, nationally representative samples of females aged 15-44 years, consisting of 6,428 females in 2008-2010 and 5,601 females in 2011-2013. We conducted simple and multivariable

INTRODUCTION: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are drug-device combination products that are placed inside the uterus above the endometrium. IUDs contain a therapeutic agent used for contraception and have been shown to have other therapeutic benefits. Over the past century, intrauterine drug delivery systems (IUDDS) have revolutionized women's health, and they hold immense growth potential in the future for new developments in the therapeutic areas beyond contraception.
AREAS COVERED: The aim of this review is to offer a comprehensive description of the history, development, and current state of

INTRODUCTION: Choosing a contraceptive method is an important aspect of sexual life. However, it can be a difficult decision due to insufficient knowledge about the physiology of the menstrual cycle and different methods of contraception. This raises the question of whether female medical students, who should have greater knowledge in this area, choose different contraceptive methods compared with non-medical students.
AIM: To examine contraceptive preferences in female students, and establish whether their field of study affects these preferences.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included

Four cases of female genital actinomycosis are added to the reported total of about 300. The relationship of the disease to the normal microbial flora, intrauterine contraceptive device usage and pelvic sepsis is explored. It is suggested that the disease may be more frequent than hitherto realized.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the factors influencing the contraceptive practice of the female population in the rural area of Thrace, Greece.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective sociopsychological study on representatives of the two major religious subgroups in Thrace: 127 Orthodox Christians and 120 Muslims. The women were reasonably representative in terms of age, education, marital status and professional life. Interviews covered sexual history and contraceptive use in detail.
RESULTS: We observed a significant preference of Christians for condoms, and of Muslims for coitus interruptus. Th

Our knowledge about the safety, the incidence of side effects, and the effectiveness of contraceptive methods for women in premenopause, or during the last decade of their reproductive life, has not been a primary interest for research and development in fertility control. The main purpose of trials for the evaluation of new contraceptive methods is to test their effectiveness, and therefore only women below 38 years of age are accepted. Furthermore, when new methods are being tested, only healthy women are accepted, and those having health problems of almost any kind are excluded. Therefore o

Although effective contraceptives are crucial for preventing unintended pregnancies, evidence suggests that their use may perturb the female genital tract (FGT). A comparative analysis of the effects of the most common contraceptives on the FGT have not been evaluated in a randomized clinical trial setting. Here, we evaluated the effect of three long-acting contraceptive methods: depot medroxyprogesterone acetate(DMPA-IM), levonorgestrel(LNG) implant, and a copper intrauterine device (Cu-IUD), on the endocervical host transcriptome in 188 women from the Evidence for Contraceptive Options and H

This report describes current contraceptive use among women of childbearing age (ages 15-44) during 2011-2013. Current contraceptive use is defined as use during the month of interview, not for a specific act of sexual intercourse. This report's primary focus is describing patterns of contraceptive use among women who are currently using contraception, by social and demographic characteristics. Data from 2002 and 2006-2010 are presented for comparison. METHODS-Data for the 2011-2013 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) were collected through in-person interviews in respondents' homes. Contraceptive counseling is a critical component of the management of the female patient with epilepsy because of the increased risk of pregnancy associated with epilepsy and the multitude of interactions between antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and hormonal contraception. Steroid hormones and many of the AEDs are substrates for the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, in particular, the 3A4 isoenzyme. As a result, concomitant use of hormonal contraceptives and AEDs may pose a risk for unexpected pregnancy, seizures, and drug-related adverse effects. The risk of combined oral contraceptive (COC) failure i

Almost one half of pregnancies in the United States are unintended. Primary reasons for the high rate of unplanned pregnancy include dissatisfaction with or underuse of effective contraceptive methods and poor compliance with contraceptive methods that require daily adherence. Several effective forms of contraception have become available in the United States within the past four years. The combined hormonal vaginal ring is inserted into the vagina for three weeks and then removed; after one ring-free week, a new ring is inserted. The contraceptive patch works in much the same way as oral cont

Weight gain is one of the side effects often attributed to the use of hormonal contraception. Concern about weight gain can hinder particularly young women to use a safe contraceptive method or may be a reason for early discontinuation. In the following review, we present studies examining the influence of different contraceptive methods on weight change and discuss the results and methodological problems. During use of hormonal contraceptives, weight fluctuates by about 3 kg over an observation interval from 6 to 24 months. Only in a subgroup of Depo Provera users is the increase in weight hi
