Indigenous Knowledge Systems & Psychedelic Science: Towards Ethical and Reciprocal Collaboration.

Indigenous Peoples have cultivated and protected natural psychoactive medicines through ceremony, kinship, and spiritual responsibility across generations, yet their long-standing contributions have often been marginalized through extractive research, commercialization, and policy exclusion. It is Indigenous communities that have stewarded and gained expertise working with psychoactive medicines for centuries, yet they remain underrepresented within the scientific discourse. This commentary advances the case for reciprocal and equitable collaboration in psychedelic science, grounded in Indigen

Durkheim, Indoctrinability and the Moral Ambivalence of Human Sociality : An Evolutionary Multilevel Model of Cultural Transmission, Cooperation and Group-Boundaries.

Humans tend to be prosocial towards in-group members, but often hostile towards out-group members. In line with ethology and evolutionary ps … ilevel selection, the simulations combine fuzzy group-boundaries and between-group competition with cooperative behavior and intergenerational cultural transmission of prosocial behavior within groups. Results show that group boundaries, e.g. due to cultural markers, can explain the evolution of cooperative behavior. However, efficient Durkheimian learning and intergr …

Neural mechanisms distinguishing two types of cooperative problem-solving approaches: An fNIRS hyperscanning study.

Collaborative cooperation (CC) and division of labor cooperation (DLC) are two prevalent forms of cooperative problem-solving approaches in daily life. Despite extensive research on the neural mechanisms underlying cooperative problem-solving approaches, a notable gap exists between the neural processes that support CC and DLC. The present study utilized a functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) hyperscanning technique along with a classic cooperative tangram puzzle task to investigate the neural mechanisms engaged by both friends and stranger dyads during CC versus DLC. The key findings

The third axis: partner choice.

Though we find the 'triple theory' of moral cognition, with its emphasis on resource-rational contractualism, to be well argued, we suggest that Levine et al.'s model starts too late in the process. That is, we agree that their proposed abstractions and heuristics can help to develop mutually beneficial arrangements, but effective contracts also require the identification of reliable actors.

How role reversal and interpersonal closeness shape verbal communication cooperation: an fNIRS hyperscanning study.

Role reversal refers to the exchange of original role responsibilities between interaction partners in social interactions, aiming to achiev … tion cooperation and its neural mechanisms. Our results showed that role reversal not only enhanced cooperative behavior among both friend and stranger dyads but also improved speech fluency in friend dyads, as indicated by faster instructor speech rates and fewer filler words. Furthermore, role reversal significantly increased Inter-brain Synchrony (IBS) among friend …

Modulating the activity of right temporo-parietal junction by anodal tDCS enhances the agent's repayment in hold-up game.

Hold-up problem is very common in non-contractible relation-specific investment transactions. And this problem can affect by trust, cooperation and altruism behavior of human beings. Recent neuroscience researches had explored a network of right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) involved in human cooperation and altruism behavior. The purpose of this study is to modulate the activation of rTPJ through transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and to study the influence of rTPJ on investment and offer behavior in hold-up game. The results of our study showed that the anodal stimulation sig

Despotism promotes dyadic cooperation through enhanced interdependencies in non-human primate societies.

Cooperation is the cornerstone of human societies, and its emergence is firmly linked to enhanced tolerance and egalitarianism. However, evidence of profuse cooperation in less tolerant and despotic societies challenges this predominant view. The overarching interdependency hypothesis may resolve the conundrum. It posits that group-level interdependencies, like strength in numbers in colonially nesting species or allomaternal care in cooperatively breeding species, promote indiscriminate cooperation through enhanced tolerance. Crucially, this hypothesis also predicts that dyadic interdependenc

Inactivation of MexT in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 destabilizes cooperation and favors the emergence of a unique quorum sensing variant.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic Gram-negative pathogen, uses a cell-cell signaling system called quorum sensing to coordinate group behaviors. Quorum sensing in P. aeruginosa is a model to study cooperative behaviors in populations. Several studies of cooperation have been conducted using strain PAO1. Wild-type PAO1 harbors a mutation in mexS, which encodes a negative regulator of the transcription factor MexT, which, in turn, activates many genes, including the efflux pump MexEF-OprN. We hypothesized that the PAO1 mexS mutation might affect cooperative behaviors. When P. aeruginosa i…

Cooperative strategies for robot-aided gait neuro-rehabilitation.

Task-oriented repetitive movements can improve muscular strength and movement coordination in patients with impairments due to neurological or orthopedic lesions. The application of robotics and automation technology can serve to assist, enhance, evaluate, and document neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation of the lower and upper extremities. This review presentation will give an overview of patient-cooperative techniques to the robot-aided gait rehabilitation of paralyzed patients. Patient-cooperative means that the technical system considers the patient intention and efforts rather than

Does horse temperament influence horse-rider cooperation?

Cooperation between rider and horse is of major importance in equitation. A balanced team of horse and rider improves (sport) performances and welfare aspects by decreasing stress, frustration, risks of injuries, and accidents. Important features affecting the cooperation are the physical skills, knowledge, and personality of the rider on one hand and the temperament, experience, and physical abilities of the horse on the other. A study with 16 riders and 16 warm-blood riding horses tested the effect of personality of riders and temperament of horses on cooperation between riders and horses. M

The punishment that sustains cooperation is often coordinated and costly.

Experiments are not models of cooperation; instead, they demonstrate the presence of the ethical and other-regarding predispositions that often motivate cooperation and the punishment of free-riders. Experimental behavior predicts subjects' cooperation in the field. Ethnographic studies in small-scale societies without formal coercive institutions demonstrate that disciplining defectors is both essential to cooperation and often costly to the punisher.

Non-invasive dual-brain stimulation facilitates social cooperation through enhancing interpersonal neural synchronization.

Reciprocal altruism-based cooperation is ubiquitous among humans and plays a crucial role in the survival and evolutionary trajectories of human beings. Prior research has been capable of comprehending social cooperation by examining the patterns of interpersonal neural synchronization (INS) during real bidirectional social interactions, rather than focusing on single-brain responses to external stimuli. However, the causal influence of INS on cooperative strategic behaviors remains unclear. To address this gap, we directly modulated the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ)'s INS between indi

Social tinkering is real, but is it enough?

We are sympathetic to the target article's emphasis on directed innovation and coordinated problem-solving as the microfoundations of emergent social order. Nevertheless, the authors' framing of social tinkering as a middle ground between extremes of deliberate design and selection on random variation risks caricaturing reasonable scientific positions and obscuring the question of which processes (one-shot innovation, incremental tinkering, and additional processes like cultural group selection) contribute most to complex cooperative institutions.

Human cooperation.

Why should you help a competitor? Why should you contribute to the public good if free riders reap the benefits of your generosity? Cooperation in a competitive world is a conundrum. Natural selection opposes the evolution of cooperation unless specific mechanisms are at work. Five such mechanisms have been proposed: direct reciprocity, indirect reciprocity, spatial selection, multilevel selection, and kin selection. Here we discuss empirical evidence from laboratory experiments and field studies of human interactions for each mechanism. We also consider cooperation in one-shot, anonymous inte

Feasibility and effects of patient-cooperative robot-aided gait training applied in a 4-week pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Functional training is becoming the state-of-the-art therapy approach for rehabilitation of individuals after stroke and spinal cord injury. Robot-aided treadmill training reduces personnel effort, especially when treating severely affected patients. Improving rehabilitation robots towards more patient-cooperative behavior may further increase the effects of robot-aided training. This pilot study aims at investigating the feasibility of applying patient-cooperative robot-aided gait rehabilitation to stroke and incomplete spinal cord injury during a therapy period of four weeks. Indirect reciprocity undermines indirect reciprocity destabilizing large-scale cooperation.

Previous models suggest that indirect reciprocity (reputation) can stabilize large-scale human cooperation [K. Panchanathan, R. Boyd, Nature 432, 499-502 (2004)]. The logic behind these models and experiments [J. Gross et al., Sci. Adv. 9, eadd8289 (2023) and O. P. Hauser, A. Hendriks, D. G. Rand, M. A. Nowak, Sci. Rep. 6, 36079 (2016)] is that a strategy in which individuals conditionally aid others based on their reputation for engaging in costly cooperative behavior serves as a punishment that incentivizes large-scale cooperation without the second-order free-rider problem. However, these m…

Two ways to overcome the three social dilemmas of indirect reciprocity.

Indirect reciprocity is one of the main principles of evolving cooperation in a social dilemma situation. In reciprocity, a positive score is given to cooperative behaviour while a negative score is given to non-cooperative behaviour, and the dilemma is resolved by selectively cooperating only with those with positive scores. However, many studies have shown that non-cooperation with those who have not cooperated also downgrades one's reputation; they have called this situation the scoring dilemma. To address this dilemma, the notion of justified punishments has been considered. The notion of
