BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neuropathologic changes in Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) involve variable brain structures. Corpus callosum involvement in WE, however, is largely unknown. The authors investigated the degree and the pattern of corpus callosum changes in WE according to the etiologies.
METHODS: Nineteen patients with WE (between 34 and 81 years) and 19 age- and sex-matched control participants were included. The total cross-sectional callosal area and 5 callosal subregions (C1-C5) were measured by tracing outer margins in the midsagittal sections. Subregions were determined by placing…

Agenesia of corpus callosum belongs to a group of cerebral malformations whose prognosis is uncertain. In such cases, assessment of prognosis may benefit from eventual associated fetal, obstetrical or familial features. We report a patient with an isolated corpus callosum agenesia that led to the discovery of a similar malformation in her father. This observation demonstrates that some forms of isolated and familial corpus callosum agenesia could have a favorable outcome. However, the difficulty of the assessment of prognosis in isolated corpus callosum agenesia is emphasized and the question …

INTRODUCTION: The corpus callosum is the major neopallial connection between the two cerebral hemispheres. The corpus callosum agenesis (CCA) is found in 14% of CNS malformations. The diagnosis is based on neuroimaging procedures (ultrasonography, CT, MRI). The CCA is usually associated with facial dysmorphia, developmental delay and epileptic seizures. Two casuistic are studied, one with necropsies material and another with CCA patients alive, on which CCA was frequently associated with other CNS malformations, in order to establish the circumstances in which the epileptic seizures have been …

Computed tomographic and plain X-ray observations in a patient with corpus callosum lipoma associated with frontal encephalocele are reported. The rarity of the lesion and the specific diagnostic criteria on CT are emphasised.

A case of callosal lipoma with radiologic, angiographic and CT comprovation is discussed under actual knowledge of metabolic and clinical aspect of lipomas. The authors also make considerations about surroundings and genetic factors which would play a role acting especifically with chemical biotrophism on developing cells, affecting the genesis of corpus callosum and altering the functional structure of cells affected.

BACKGROUND: Despite hypotheses regarding the neurobiology of panic disorder (PD), its neurobiological basis is still unknown. Study results support that the individual differences in corpus callosum (CC) properties could reflect trait based alterations that predispose individuals to higher anxiety sensitivity, and to disorders associated with stress such as PD. Neuroimaging studies with panic disorder have not been sufficient to explain the pathophysiology of the disease. The aim of this study is to provide additional information for studies examining the etiology of PD by comparing the corpus…

INTRODUCTION: Ciguatera is a food poisoning caused by marine organisms and has a polymoprhic clinic. Differential diagnoses need to be eliminated.
OBSERVATION: A patient was hospitalized for a febrile syndrome a few days after the appearance of clinical signs suggestive of ciguatera after consuming lagoon fish. He also presented with central neurological signs and brain MRI revealed a lesion of the corpus callosum. A skin infection linked to the scratching lesions was the cause of this febrile state and a diagnosis of CLOCCS was made based on the lesions on MRI.
CONCLUSION: A central neurolo…

Corpus callosum agenesis develops when the band which connects the two hemispheres of the brain does not occur in utero. It is associated with prenatal infections, genetic factors, toxic exposures, metabolic disorders, and chromosome errors. Mostly seen clinical features are macrocephaly, microcephaly, seizures, motor retardation, hypotonia, eye anomalies, and facial dysmorphisms. Here, we report a case of corpus callosum agenesis syndrome undergoing upper endoscopy under deep sedation with dexmedetomidine. The main anesthetic concerns are difficulty in airway, respiratory problems, gastric re…

INTRODUCTION: Behçet's disease is a multi-system vascular-inflammatory disease with possible involvement of the central nervous system. Lesions of the corpus callosum on MRI have been rarely reported in this disease.
CASE REPORT: A 47-year-old woman was admitted for a sudden right hemiplegia and confusion revealing a Behcet's disease. MRI showed a pedonculo-thalamic lesion and a white matter hypersignals, which was suggestive of the disease. Besides, involvement of the corpus callosum was observed.
CONCLUSION: This case demonstrates that Behcet's disease should be considered among diseases w…

Corpus callosum agenesis is a relatively common brain malformation. It can be isolated or included in a complex alteration of brain (or sometimes even whole body) morphology. It has been associated with a number of neuropsychiatric disorders, from subtle neuropsychological deficits to Pervasive Developmental Disorders.Etiology and pathogenetic mechanisms have been better understood in recent years, due to the availability of more adequate animal models and the relevant progresses in developmental neurosciences. These recent findings are reviewed (through a MedLine search including papers publi…

Corpus callosum agenesis is frequently only the tip of the iceberg in midline commissural anomalies. Agenesis or hypogenesis of the remaining commissures including the anterior and hippocampal commissures should be excluded. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most sensitive imaging modality to identify commissural anomalies. Diffusion tensor imaging can be helpful to identify hypogenetic or absent commissures even in the preterm neonate.

Although the cause of autism is undetermined, a general consensus has been that some type of early aberrant neural development underlies the disorder. Given the increased prevalence of macrocephaly in autism, one theory of abnormal neural development implicates early brain growth resulting in larger brain and head size in autism. Surface area measurements of the midsagittal section of the corpus callosum can be used as an index of neural development and white-matter integrity because the corpus callosum is the major white-matter structure that interconnects the two cerebral hemispheres. The pu…

Agenesis of corpus callosum (ACC) often accompanies other neural migration disorders and its prognosis must take these disorders and other associated abnormalities into account. Isolated complete ACC, i.e., agenesis of corpus callosum without other central nervous system anomaly, is rare. A total of six patients, aged nine months to 15 years, with isolated complete ACC diagnosed by brain image study in the past eight years of our hospital were evaluated for associated defects and prognosis. Isolated complete ACC without associated congenital heart disease (CHD) was found in four of the six pat…

BACKGROUND: Preterm (PT) birth disrupts critical third-trimester brain maturation, particularly affecting the corpus callosum (CC) and cerebellum. As interconnected components of cerebro-cerebellar networks, their developmental trajectories and spatial relationships remain incompletely understood. This study used serial cranial ultrasonography to characterize these alterations from birth to term-equivalent age (TEA).
METHODS: This prospective observational study included 117 neonates, comprising 60 term infants and 57 PT infants. A total of 719 cranial ultrasound examinations were analyzed. P…
