Topographical anatomy of the tentorium cerebelli and venous confluences in human midterm fetuses.

Early development of veins and sinuses at and around the posterior cranial fossa seemed not to be shown by photographs except for our recent study (Ann Anat, 2020). Examination of histological sections of 38 fetuses at 10-16 weeks gestational age (GA) demonstrated that: (1) the superior petrosal sinus passed posterosuperiorly through the tentorium cerebelli and, distant and lateral to both the cerebellum and internal ear, drained into the transverse sinus; (2) the superior sagittal sinus was underdeveloped, and the inferior sagittal sinus was not yet evident; (3) the straight sinus (STS) origi

Venous Causes of Pulsatile Tinnitus: Clinical Presentation, Clinical and Radiographic Evaluation, Pathogenesis, and Endovascular Treatments: A Literature Review.

Tinnitus is an abnormal perception of a sound without external stimulation. Venous pulsatile tinnitus (VPT) is a specific form of tinnitus characterized by an objective and often subjective bruit that occurs as a result of localized venous abnormalities. Clinical evaluation relies on sound quality, duration, and precipitating factors. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and transverse sinus stenosis (TSS) are among the most common causes of VPT. Other causes include sigmoid sinus wall abnormalities (SSWAs), jugular vein anomalies (JVAs), and emissary veins anomalies. These anomalies can

Morphology, constraints, and scaling of frontal sinuses in the hartebeest, Alcelaphus buselaphus (Mammalia: Artiodactyla, Bovidae).

The frontal sinuses of bovid mammals display a great deal of diversity, which has been attributed to both phylogenetic and functional influences. In-depth study of the hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus), a large African antelope, reveals a number of previously undescribed details of frontal sinus morphology. In A. buselaphus, the frontal sinuses conform closely to the shape of the frontal bone, filling nearly the entire element. However, the horncores are never extensively pneumatized, contrasting with the condition seen in many other bovids. This evidence is inconsistent with the hypothesis t

Frontal Bone is Thicker in Women and Frontal Sinus is Larger in Men: A Morphometric Analysis.

Cranial bone thickness and frontal sinus size are important parameters to be known before cranial procedures. Deep-learning systems have become popular for making bulk analyses to diagnose diseases/disorders and plan treatment algorithms in diverse fields of medicine. Deep-learning systems would be valuable assets also for cranial procedures. Deep-learning systems need normative values and variances of the population on which they are used. In the present study, the authors aimed to find out the normative values for skull bone thickness at 4 anatomical locations, and frontal sinus size. the au

Recurrence of olfactory groove meningiomas.

OBJECTIVE: Despite apparent gross total resection, olfactory groove meningiomas have a high rate of late recurrence (average, 23%). In this retrospective study, we confirmed that the sites of these recurrences are the cranial base and paranasal sinuses. We postulated that these recurrences stem from conservative handling of the underlying invaded bone. Therefore, we analyzed patient outcomes according to the radicality of surgical resection. METHODS: Fifteen consecutive patients with a diagnosis of olfactory groove meningioma were treated surgically between 1992 and 2001 (nine new cases, six

Pneumatization of the Sphenoidal Sinus May Affect Endonasal Cranial Base Reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to verify if the length of the nasoseptal flap is sufficient to cover the tuberculum sellae and planum sphenoidale of sphenoidal sinuses with varied degrees of pneumatization. METHODS: Retrospective study of paranasal sinus computed tomography comparing the potential length of the nasoseptal flap and the length of the nasoseptal flap required for reconstruction of transtuberculum and transplanum approaches in conchal, presellar, sellar, incomplete postsellar, and complete postsellar sphenoidal sinuses. RESULTS: The length of the nasoseptal flap required fo

Modification of three-dimensional prototype temporal bone model for training in skull-base surgery.

Experience with dissection of the temporal bone is essential for training in skull-base surgery, but only a limited number of neurosurgical residents have the opportunity of cadaver dissection. A modification of a commercially available prototype three-dimensional (3D) temporal bone model is proposed to include artificial dura mater, venous sinuses, and cranial nerves for such surgical training. The base 3D temporal bone model incorporates the surface details and the inner ear structures and air cells. Model dural sinuses and dura mater made from silicone, cranial nerves made from rubber fiber

The eye and face pain.

Because face pain may be referred from the eye, all patients with this complaint require a careful eye examination. Pain may also be referred to the eye and surrounding face by other structures innervated by the ophthalmic division of the fifth (trigeminal) cranial nerve. These structures include the paranasal sinuses, orbital contents, optic nerve, and meninges and vessels in the cavernous sinus and anterior cranial fossa.

Headaches due to nasal and paranasal sinus disease.

Sinus infections are much less common today than they were in the preantibiotic era, but they still are overdiagnosed. Acute sinusitis, a relatively uncommon cause of headache, is the result of infection of one or more of the cranial sinuses. Acute sinusitis usually is characterized by purulent discharge in the nasal passages and a pain profile determined by the site of infection. Sinusitis is overdiagnosed as a cause of headache because of the belief that pain over the sinuses must be related to the sinuses. In fact, frontal head pain more often is caused by migraine and tension-type headache…

Mucocele of neurosurgical interest: clinical considerations on five cases.

The authors present five patients with mucocele, submitted to neurosurgery. Two had mucoceles spreading from the frontal and/or the anterior ethmoidal sinuses and had only compressive mass symptoms, either on the ocular globe or on the frontal lobe or on both. Three patients had mucoceles growing from the sphenoid and/or posterior ethmoidal sinuses. In these latter, the mass symptoms were less evident. All the patients suffered excruciating retro-ocular pain and two presented cranial nerve damage. The correct diagnosis in these cases is crucial to avoid a too aggressive treatment since these p

Isolated Fungal Sphenoid Sinusitis With Cavernous Sinus Thrombophlebitis: A Case Report.

Cavernous sinus thrombophlebitis is a rare, potentially life-threatening, condition that is most often caused by gram-negative bacteria and, to a lesser extent, fungi. Mucor is an opportunistic fungus that frequently affects patients with a weak immune system. We describe a case of an adult female without diabetes who developed Mucor sphenoid sinusitis causing cavernous sinus thrombophlebitis. The patient presented with headache, diplopia, and right lateral rectus palsy. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed abnormal prominent enhancement involving the cavernous sinuses associated wi

Anatomy of the falcine sinus during the prenatal period.

BACKGROUND: The falcine sinus in the falx cerebri is rarely encountered in adults, appearings in approximately 2.1% of CT examinations of adult patients. Some authors have studied the plexus rather than the sinus, a rare form of the venous pathway between the layers of the cerebral falx, which connects the superior sagittal sinus with the inferior sagittal sinus and the straight sinus. The aim of this study was to analyse the anatomy of the falcine sinus in the prenatal period, which will fill a gap in the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study consisted of 50 foetuses with a v-tube le

The Incidence of Transverse Sinus Stenosis in Multiple Sclerosis: Further Evidence of Pulse Wave Encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with a breakdown in the intracranial pulse wave dampening or windkessel effect. This is manifest by an increase in the arterial stroke volume and a decrease in the dampening afforded by both the CSF displaced into the spinal canal and the blood displaced by the venous sinus pulsation. There is evidence that the reduction in compliance of the sagittal and straight sinuses in MS is caused by an increase in venous pressure despite the jugular bulb pressures being normal. This implies MS patients have a venous outflow stenosis somewhere between the

Dissectable modified three-dimensional temporal bone and whole skull base models for training in skull base approaches.

Training in dissection of the skull base is essential for anatomical understanding and correct surgical techniques, but chances for cadaver dissection are limited, so a substitute is very desirable. Modifications of commercially available three-dimensional (3D) temporal bone and whole skull base models made from surgically dissectable artificial bone are proposed to include artificial dura mater, venous sinuses, carotid artery, and cranial nerves as educational tools for training in skull base surgery. These 3D models precisely reproduce the surface details and inner bony structures such as th

Neurosurgical considerations of cranial base surgery.

Several craniotomies have been described that allow extensive resection of skull base and low-lying cranial tumors that involve little disfigurement to the patient. These techniques should be of interest to plastic surgeons as they may be called to aid their neurosurgical colleagues in exposing the anterior skull base or may be involved in combined procedures to resect tumors that involve the face, sinuses, orbit, and cranial vault.

The Relationships between Asterion, the Transverse-Sigmoid Junction, the Superior Nuchal Line and the Transverse Sinus in Thai Cadavers: Surgical Relevance.

BACKGROUND: Anatomical localization of the venous sinuses in the posterior cranial fossa is important to preventing inadvertent venous sinus injury during surgical approaches to the area. Identification of surface landmarks related to these structures is useful in planning such approaches. OBJECTIVE: To identify the positions of the asterion and the superior nuchal line for localization of the venous sinus in the posterior fossa. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Twenty fresh cadaveric heads, yielding 40 sides, were used. The vessels were injected with colored silicone. The soft tissues were removed to e
