The Zika virus outbreak in Latin America resulted in congenital malformations, called congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). For unknown reasons, CZS incidence was highest in northeastern Brazil; one potential explanation is that dengue virus (DENV)-mediated immune enhancement may promote CZS development. In contrast, our analyses of historical DENV genomic data refuted the hypothesis that unique genome signatures for northeastern Brazil explain the uneven dispersion of CZS cases. To confirm our findings, we performed serotype-specific DENV neutralization tests in a case-control framework in northeas

Ingestion of undercooked meat has been proposed as an important source of human Toxoplasma gondii infection. To ascertain the contribution of meat consumption to the risk of human infection, estimates of the prevalence of infection in meat-producing animals are required. A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess T. gondii infection in pigs raised in England, to identify risk factors for infection, and to compare performance of two serological tests: modified agglutination test (MAT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Blood samples from 2071 slaughter pigs originating from 131

An effective HIV-1 vaccine should elicit sufficient breadth of immune recognition to protect against the genetically diverse forms of the circulating virus. Evaluation of the breadth and magnitude of cellular immune responses to epitope variants is important for HIV-1 vaccine assessment. We compared HIV-1 Gag-specific T-lymphocyte responses in 20 HIV-1-infected individuals representing two different HIV-1 subtypes, B and C. By assessing T lymphocyte responses with peptides based on natural HIV-1 variants, we found evidence for limited cross-reactivity and significantly enhanced within-clade re

Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) causes HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis and adult T cell leukemia in a small percentage of infected individuals. HTLV-I infection is increasingly associated with clinical manifestations. To determine the prevalence of clinical manifestations in HTLV-I infected individuals, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 115 HTLV-I-infected blood donors without myelopathy and 115 age- and sex-matched seronegative controls. Subjects answered a standardized questionnaire and underwent physical examination. Compared with controls, HTLV-I-

Preimmunization with attenuated Corpus Christi stain Trypanosoma cruzi provides survival to C3H mice and enhances resistance of C57 mice to Brazil strain infection. C3H(He) and C57 B1/6 mice surviving acute infection of T. cruzi are shown to have heart specific autoantibodies through acute and chronic infection. ELISA assays were performed using nondenatured extract of hearts from normal syngeneic mice as target antigen reacted with sera from immunized and/or infected mice. Surviving C3H mice developed a specific anti-heart response as early as Day 21 of infection and this response continued a

Animal influenza viruses can spread across species and pose a fatal threat to human health due to the high pathogenicity and mortality. Animal models are crucial for studying cross-species infection and the pathogenesis of influenza viruses. Tupaia belangeri (tree shrew) has been emerging as an animal model for multiple human virus infections recently because of the close genetic relationship and phylogeny with humans. So far, tree shrew has been reported to be susceptible to human influenza virus subtype H1N1, avian influenza viruses subtype H9N2, subtype H5N1, and subtype H7N9. However, the

Immune responses to pathogens occur within the context of current and previous infections. Cross protection refers to the phenomena where infection with a particular pathogen provides enhanced resistance to a subsequent unrelated pathogen in an antigen-independent manner. Proposed mechanisms of antigen-independent cross protection have involved the secretion of IFN-gamma, which activates macrophages, thus providing enhanced innate immunity against the secondary viral or bacterial pathogen. Here we provide evidence that a primary infection with the chronic respiratory pathogen, Mycoplasma pulmo

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases are often co-endemic in affected areas but how they interact is less clear, especially in the case of Hansen's Disease (HD), commonly referred to as leprosy. Prior studies have demonstrated associations between helminths and HD and tuberculosis, but our understanding of the epidemiology of these infections is limited. Our goal was to assess the prevalence and potential associations of Mycobacterium leprae infection and parasitic infections in a sample of community members in a highly endemic area for HD in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
METHODS: Adults and child

The La Crosse (LAC) virus infection rate of Aedes triseriatus larvae that ingest LAC virus does not appear to be increased by concomitant infection of larvae by the gregarine parasite, Ascocystis barretti. Infection rates ranged only from 0--2.6% in adult Ae. triseriatus reared from groups of A. barretti-infected larvae that had ingested LAC virus (California encephalitis group) at dosages of 2.0--7.7 log10 SMICLD50/ml. Females resulting from orally infected larvae transmitted LAC virus to suckling mice. Larvae that were infected with A. barretti and devoured carcasses of adult mosquitoes cont

Respiratory tract infections are common illnesses in children, causing significant morbidity and negatively affecting their health. Vitamin A protects against infections and maintains epithelial integrity. The goal of this study was to determine the correlation between vitamin A deficiency and recurrent respiratory tract infections (RRTIs). Participants in this cross-sectional study were divided into 3 groups: RRTIs (including patients with history of RRTIs presenting with respiratory tract infection symptoms), RTI (including patients without history of RRTIs presenting with respiratory tract

Non-invasive assays are increasingly being used in patients with suspected fungal infections. Limitations to these tests include limited sensitivity, specificity, and cross reactivity with other fungal pathogens. Herein we report a case of disseminated histoplasmosis producing a false positive serum and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) Aspergillus galactomannan assays. This test may have a role in the evaluation of patients with suspected histoplasmosis in settings where Histoplasma antigen testing is not widely available.

INTRODUCTION: Industrial radiographic film (exposed to light and then cut into a filmcard) is a tool used by radiation therapists (RTs) in the setup of patients before delivering external beam radiation therapy. At the Tom Baker Cancer Center (TBCC), filmcards are reused throughout the day on multiple patients and multiple body sites; thus the risk of cross-contamination exists. The primary objective of this study was to assess the risk of cross-contamination by determining the potential for bacteria to survive on filmcards, in an effort to reduce the risk of cross-infection.

An animal model of dental virus transmission was developed using the lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus (LDV) of mice to study cross infection. Mouse-to-mouse cross-infection was carried out by scaling the teeth of LDV-infected donor mice with dental instruments, immediately prior to using the contaminated instruments on the teeth of recipient indicator mice. The level of donor viremia was found to correlate with the rate of virus cross-infection, with a viremia threshold level of 10(7.5) ID50/ml observed for dental cross-infection. The blood volume transferred during dental cross-infection…

Infections by Cryptosporidium were detected in association with clinical disease in 11 humans (Homo sapiens), 19 calves (Bos taurus), nine common quail (Coturnix coturnix), six mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos), five ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) and a single budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus). Infections in mammals were accompanied by transient diarrhoea and anorexia, whereas infected birds exhibited clinical signs of respiratory distress. Repeated cross-transmission studies revealed apparent strain differences or differences in the host specificity of several mammalian and av
