The cellular response in the cutaneous leishmaniasis lesion (CL), of BALB/c mice treated topically with an ointment composed of 15% paromomycin and 12% methylbenzethonium chloride (PR-ointment) was studied. In the infected, untreated control group, the lesion showed progressive necrosis with an increase in the number of parasites, macrophages, lymphocytes, and polymorphonuclear cells over a period of 18 weeks. In the PR ointment-treated group, complete healing of the lesion was observed 4 weeks after termination of treatment, but total elimination of the parasites from the lesion was observed

OBJECTIVES: Segmental sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) was measured from the wrists to the hands and digits in a population of 134 (126 men and 8 women) vibration-exposed shipyard workers following systemic warming using a bicycle ergometer. Results were compared to earlier nerve conduction tests, identical in execution, except that the warming process was segmental and cutaneous. The study was designed to investigate whether SNCVs, which were selectively slow in the fingers after segmental cutaneous (skin surface) warming, would be affected differently by systemic warming.

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a heritable connective tissue disease involving progressive fragmentation and dystrophic calcification of elastic fibers. Periumbilical disease as the exclusive site of cutaneous involvement is most commonly seen in the rare entity termed periumbilical perforating pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PPPXE). Patients with this disorder are generally obese, middle aged, multiparous black women with hypertension. The cutaneous lesions are well-demarcated, hyperpigmented, periumbilical plaques with keratotic papules on the periphery. Extracutaneous manifestations have rarel

The caterpillars' tissues contain substances for the stein, mucous membranes and eyes. The paper presents 2 clinical investigations of ocular lesions produced by caterpillars. The first was done on a 7-year-old child who has got toxic keratoconjunctivitis and erythematosus and vesicular type pruriginous cutaneous eruption after crashing of a caterpillar, because of its specific toxin. The phenomena diminish after large ocular washings, and the cutaneous toxic phenomena retrocead after antipruriginous lotions and general administration of antihistaminics. The later investigation was done on a 1

Gluten sensitivity is defined as a chronic intolerance to gluten ingestion in genetically predisposed individuals. The etiology is thought to be immune-mediated and has a variable dermatologic presentation. Celiac disease (CD) is one of the most common forms of gluten intolerance and encompasses a wide range of extra-intestinal pathology, including cutaneous, endocrine, nervous, and hematologic systems. Psoriasis, another long-term inflammatory skin condition, has been linked to significant symptomatic improvement with a gluten-free diet (GFD). Palmoplantar pustulosis (PP), a variant of psoria

Cutaneous adverse drug reactions (ADRs) represent a heterogeneous field including various clinical patterns without specific features suggesting drug causality. Maculopapular exanthema and urticaria are the most common types of cutaneous ADR. Serious cutaneous ADRs, which may cause permanent sequelae or have fatal outcome, may represent 2% of all cutaneous ADR and must be quickly identified to guide their management. These serious reactions include bullous manifestations (epidermal necrolysis i.e. Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis), drug reaction with eosinophilia and sys

Odontogenic cutaneous sinus tracts represent an uncommon clinical manifestation of chronic dental infection and are frequently misdiagnosed due to the absence of dental symptoms and their resemblance to dermatologic lesions. This case report describes the nonsurgical endodontic management of a cutaneous sinus tract of dental origin in a 13-year-old patient. The patient presented with a persistent extraoral lesion in the mandibular region, initially evaluated by non-dental specialists. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed a necrotic mandibular first molar associated with a periapical

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a form of general dermatosis characterised by photo-induced cutaneous-ocular impairment and by skin cancers. In addition to these signs, there may also be neurological involvement. This disease is related to a defect in genes within the nucleotide excision repair system for the first seven genetic groups (A-G), and to an abnormality in transcription groups for the eighth group (xeroderma pigmentosum variant - XPV). Cutaneous carcinomas are the most common types of cancer seen. They may begin in childhood. Multiple melanoma commonly occurs during the course of XP b

BACKGROUND: Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is characterized by the presence of antitissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA antibodies in patient sera. In 2002, antiepidermal transglutaminase (eTG) antibodies have been identified in DH patients. Nowadays, their role is still controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate any association between presence/absence of anti-eTG antibodies and cutaneous manifestations during the follow-up.
METHODS: Anti-eTG and anti-tTG antibodies from 13 patients on gluten-free diet (GFD) were studied during follow-up on ELISA. Cutaneous manifestations baseline diff

BACKGROUND: Perforating dermatoses are heterogeneous skin disorders characterized by transepidermal elimination of dermal tissue components. Acquired perforating dermatoses can be divided into four types, according to the eliminated dermal materials: Kyrle disease, perforating reactive collagenosis, elastosis perforans serpiginosa, and perforating folliculitis. They characterize adult patients with coexisting systemic diseases, regardless of the dermal materials eliminated. The association between Kyrle disease and renal failure or diabetes mellitus is common.
CASE REPORT: We reported the cas

BACKGROUND: Adverse food reactions in dogs are clinically heterogeneous and overlap with canine atopic dermatitis, and diagnosis still relies on an elimination diet test followed by oral food challenge (EDT+OFC). Numerous allergen-specific tests have been proposed, but their diagnostic value remains controversial. Our objective was to identify, synthesize, and critically evaluate the diagnostic tests used or investigated for canine food allergy, with emphasis on their clinical validity, applicability, and agreement with the EDT+OFC reference standard.
METHODS: In accordance with PRISMA (ie, P

The pharmacokinetics of miltefosine in leishmaniasis patients are, to a great extent, unknown. We examined and characterized the pharmacokinetics of miltefosine in a group of patients with Old World (Leishmania major) cutaneous leishmaniasis. Miltefosine plasma concentrations were determined in samples taken during and up to 5 months after the end of treatment from 31 Dutch military personnel who contracted cutaneous leishmaniasis in Afghanistan and were treated with 150 mg miltefosine/day for 28 days. Samples were analyzed with a validated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry assay

Sporotrichosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease that is spreading and causing epidemics in large urban centers. Cats are the most susceptible species to develop the disease, which could cause significant systemic lesions. The aim was to investigate and to identify predictive indicators of disease progression by correlations between the blood profile (hematological and biochemical analytes) and cutaneous lesion patterns of 70 cats diagnosed with Sporothrix brasiliensis. The higher occurrence in male cats in this study could be related to being non-neutered and having access to open spaces. Princ

This study presents the first Venezuelan case of perforating granuloma annulare in an eleven year-old patient. The cutaneous eruption was characterized by minute lichenoid papules which have persisted for two years. These lesions were asymptomatic and most perforating, appearing in the dorsal side of hands and fingers. The histopathological study showed a classical granuloma annulare with sites of necrobiosis and perforation of the epithelium. This "transepithelial perforation" allows the elimination of collagen and cell detritus observed. The patient responds well to the injection of steroids

Immune checkpoint inhibitors have proven to be efficacious for a broad spectrum of solid organ malignancies. These monoclonal antibodies lead to cytotoxic T-cell activation and subsequent elimination of cancer cells. However, they can also lead to immune intolerance and immune-related adverse event (irAEs) that are new and specific to these therapies. Cutaneous irAEs are the most common, arising in up to 34% of patients on PD-1 inhibitors and 43% to 45% on CTLA-4 inhibitors. The most common skin manifestations include maculopapular eruption, pruritus, and vitiligo-like lesions. A grading syste

Cutaneous tuberculosis (CTB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection of the skin, remains a global health burden, underscoring the urgent need for more effective drugs and therapeutic strategies. In this study, we discovered a phenothiazine-based derivative, pyridine-embedded phenothiazinium (PEP), as a promising anti-cutaneous tuberculosis agent with potent efficacy both in vitro and in vivo. Upon light illumination, PEP produces abundant reactive oxygen species (ROS), including type I and type II species, enabling direct mycobacterial killing. Beyond its photodynamic bactericid

Leishmaniasis is a poverty-related disease with two main clinical forms: visceral leishmaniasis and cutaneous leishmaniasis. An estimated 0·7-1 million new cases of leishmaniasis per year are reported from nearly 100 endemic countries. The number of reported visceral leishmaniasis cases has decreased substantially in the past decade as a result of better access to diagnosis and treatment and more intense vector control within an elimination initiative in Asia, although natural cycles in transmission intensity might play a role. In east Africa however, the case numbers of this fatal disease con

Olopatadine is a selective histamine H1-receptor antagonist possessing inhibitory effects on the release of inflammatory lipid mediators such as leukotriene and thromboxane from human polymorphonuclear leukocytes and eosinophils. Olopatadine also inhibited the tachykininergic contraction in the guinea pig bronchi by prejunctional inhibition of peripheral sensory nerves. Oral administration of olopatadine inhibited passive cutaneous anaphylaxis in rats, experimental allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthmatic responses in actively sensitized guinea pigs. Olopatadine exerted no significant effects
