Estimating Structural Damage to Mangrove Forests Using Airborne Lidar Imagery: Case Study of Damage Induced by the 2017 Hurricane Irma to Mangroves in the Florida Everglades, USA.

In September 2017, Hurricane Irma made landfall in South Florida, causing a great deal of damage to mangrove forests along the southwest coast. A combination of hurricane strength winds and high storm surge across the area resulted in canopy defoliation, broken branches, and downed trees. Evaluating changes in mangrove forest structure is significant, as a loss or change in mangrove forest structure can lead to loss in the ecosystems services that they provide. In this study, we used lidar remote sensing technology and field data to assess damage to the South Florida mangrove forests from Hurr

Wrack enhancement of post-hurricane vegetation and geomorphological recovery in a coastal dune.

Coastal ecosystems such as sand dunes, mangrove forests, and salt marshes provide natural storm protection for vulnerable shorelines. At the same time, storms erode and redistribute biological materials among coastal systems via wrack. Yet how such cross-ecosystem subsidies affect post-storm recovery is not well understood. Here, we report an experimental investigation into the effect of storm wrack on eco-geomorphological recovery of a coastal embryo dune in north-eastern Florida, USA, following hurricane Irma. We contrasted replicated 100-m2 wrack-removal and unmanipulated (control) plots, m

Increasing typhoon impact and economic losses due to anthropogenic warming in Southeast China.

Despite a variety of studies on the tropical cyclone (TC) response to climate change, few of them have examined the projected damages of future TCs. Here we quantify the impact of anthropogenic warming on TC-induced damages in the late twenty-first century along the coasts of Southeast China based on convection-permitting TC simulations and machine-learning-based damage models. We found that if the area's 10 super typhoons between 2013 and 2019 were to occur at the end of the century under the high emissions RCP8.5 scenario, they would have on average a 12% ± 4% increase in landfall intensity,

Decoupled Asian monsoon intensity and precipitation during glacial-interglacial transitions on the Chinese Loess Plateau.

The discrepancies among the variations in global ice volume, cave stalagmite δ18O and rainfall reconstructed by cosmogenic 10Be tremendously restrain our understanding of the evolution of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). Here, we present a 430-ka EASM mean annual precipitation record on the Chinese Loess Plateau obtained using branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers based on a deep learning neural network; this rainfall record corresponds well with cave-derived δ18O data from southern China but differs from precipitation reconstructed by 10Be. Both branched tetraether membrane lipi

Emergency food distribution efforts in New Orleans, LA after Hurricane Ida.

BACKGROUND: The provision of food aid after a natural disaster is necessary to prevent hunger, particularly in low-resourced and low-income communities. Little is known about the operational challenges associated with ensuring equitable distribution of emergency food resources to communities in need following a disaster. To address this gap, this study assessed emergency food distribution efforts in New Orleans, LA during the 2 weeks following Hurricane Ida's landfall on August 29, 2021. METHODS: Information on free food distribution events was gathered from online sources. A list of distribu

Altered cyclone-fire interactions are changing ecosystems.

Global change is altering interactions between ecological disturbances. We review interactions between tropical cyclones and fires that affect woody biomes in many islands and coastal areas. Cyclone-induced damage to trees can increase fuel loads on the ground and dryness in the understory, which increases the likelihood, intensity, and area of subsequent fires. In forest biomes, cyclone-fire interactions may initiate a grass-fire cycle and establish stable open-canopy biomes. In cyclone-prone regions, frequent cyclone-enhanced fires may generate and maintain stable open-canopy biomes (e.g., s

Antiphase response of the Indonesian-Australian monsoon to millennial-scale events of the last glacial period.

Antiphase behaviour of monsoon systems in alternate hemispheres is well established at yearly and orbital scales in response to alternating sensible heating of continental landmasses. At intermediate timescales without a sensible heating mechanism both in-phase and antiphase behaviours of northern and southern hemisphere monsoon systems are recorded at different places and timescales. At present, there is no continuous, high resolution, precisely dated record of millennial-scale variability of the Indonesian-Australian monsoon during the last glacial period with which to test theories of paleo

Experiences from Cyclone Anna and Cyclone Dumako: A short report.

In the third week of January 2022, the southern districts of Malawi were hit by Cyclone Ana. The worst affected areas were Chikwawa and Nsanje. Four weeks following Cyclone Ana, a rather smaller cyclone, Dumako, hit the same areas, causing more damage. The Partners in Health or Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo, an international humanitarian nongovernmental organisation that provides primary health care (PHC), organised teams to join Chikwawa District Council - Health, providing PHC assistance in the most affected district (Chikwawa); these teams were joined by three senior residents in family medicine from

Hurricane preparedness, response and recovery: Is everybody ready?

Nothing strikes a heightened level of awareness among coastal and island communities, emergency managers and critical infrastructure owners like the start of another hurricane season. Even though the season starts at the same time every year - 15th May for the Eastern Pacific region, and 1st June for the Atlantic and Central Pacific regions - too many organisations, agencies and communities are ill-prepared for a hurricane to strike. For emergency management professionals and critical infrastructure owners, however, this is not an option: the communities served by these organisations are count

Loss of life caused by the flooding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina: analysis of the relationship between flood characteristics and mortality.

In this article a preliminary analysis of the loss of life caused by Hurricane Katrina in the New Orleans metropolitan area is presented. The hurricane caused more than 1,100 fatalities in the state of Louisiana. A preliminary data set that gives information on the recovery locations and individual characteristics for 771 fatalities has been analyzed. One-third of the analyzed fatalities occurred outside the flooded areas or in hospitals and shelters in the flooded area. These fatalities were due to the adverse public health situation that developed after the floods. Two-thirds of the analyzed

Assessment of cyclone risk and case study of Gaja cyclone using GIS techniques and machine learning algorithms in coastal zone of Tamil Nadu, India.

Cyclones can cause devastating impacts, including strong winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges, and flooding. The aftermath includes infrastructure damage, loss of life, displacement of communities, and ecological disruptions. Timely response and recovery efforts are crucial to minimize the socio-economic and environmental consequences of cyclones. To accelerate the time-consuming risk assessment process, particularly in geographically diverse regions, a blend of multi-criteria decision-making and machine learning models was utilized. This novel approach swiftly assessed cyclone risk and the imp

Implications of tropical cyclones on damage and potential recovery and restoration of logged forests in Vietnam.

Many natural forests in Southeast Asia are degraded following decades of logging. Restoration of these forests is delayed by ongoing logging and tropical cyclones, but the implications for recovery are largely uncertain. We analysed meteorological, satellite and forest inventory plot data to assess the effect of Typhoon Doksuri, a major tropical cyclone, on the forest landscapes of central Vietnam consisting of natural forests and plantations. We estimated the return period for a cyclone of this intensity to be 40 years. Plantations were almost twice as likely to suffer cyclone damage compared

Factors of cyclone disaster deaths in coastal Bangladesh.

Bangladesh's success in disaster risk management is often evidenced by referencing the reduction of deaths caused by tropical cyclones - the Cyclone Gorky 1991 caused 147,000 deaths, the Cyclone Sidr 2007 caused 4500 deaths and only 6 deaths by the Cyclone Mora in 2017. This raises questions of how deaths occurred by tropical cyclones in the past and what factors still might contribute towards deaths from cyclone hazards? This study answers these questions through face-to-face interviews with 362 residents, field visits and observations across coastal Bangladesh. The findings indicate that the

Assessing Tropical Cyclone-Driven Aerosol Transport - A High-Resolution WRF-Chem Analysis of Major Hurricane Matthew and Implications for Future Climate Scenarios.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are traditionally viewed as atmospheric cleansers, removing pollutants through precipitation and winds. However, emerging evidence suggests that TCs also transport pollutants over long distances, with their full impact on pollutant dynamics still underexplored. In this study, aerosol transport and chemical transformation during Hurricane Matthew (2016) are analyzed using high-resolution WRF-Chem simulations. The Hurricane-Driven Aerosol Transport Analysis Framework (WHDA-TAF) is developed to assess aerosol behavior under both current and future climate scenarios. Simula

Impacts of precipitation during tropical cyclones and regional vulnerabilities on mortality in South Korea.

Although tropical cyclones (TCs) bring not only strong winds but also heavy rainfall, the health impacts of precipitation during TCs remain unclear. We evaluated mortality risks associated with TC-accompanying precipitation and identified the regional characteristics contributing to vulnerability in South Korea. Daily TC-related maximum wind speeds were estimated using a wind field model and gauge-based precipitation was obtained from 2002 to 2019. Using nationwide time-series mortality data, we fitted quasi-Poisson regression models at each district with a distributed lag linear model to asse

Riding the Storm: Microeukaryote Community Responses to Hurricane Disturbance.

Sandy beaches are dynamic ecosystems where terrestrial and marine organisms coexist, resulting in diverse communities where microeukaryotes (protists, microalgae, and meiofauna) are key drivers. Understanding their diversity patterns and responses to stressors is essential for elucidating ecological processes, yet information on this subject remains limited. Herein, microeukaryotic diversity in a sandy beach in Acapulco, Guerrero, was analyzed via ITS1 metabarcoding assessing community structure changes following hurricane Otis. Overall, the number of ASVs decreased substantially from 260 befo

Mangrove forest recovery a decade after Super Typhoon Haiyan.

Many mangrove forests in the Philippines were severely damaged by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, one of the strongest tropical cyclones in recent world history. This study focuses on a specific patch of mangrove forest in Cancabato Bay, located in Tacloban-the city most severely affected. To assess the extent of typhoon-induced impacts on the forest, the intensities of wind, waves, and storm surge during the typhoon were hindcasted using an advanced meteorological-hydrodynamic coupling model. It is estimated that the storm surge and high waves, reaching up to 4.7 m and 1.3 m respectively, destroyed t
