OBJECTIVES: Traditional epidemiologic studies have significantly underestimated interstitial cystitis (IC) prevalence because they surveyed populations for diagnosed cases rather than screening for IC symptoms and evaluating suspected cases. Our earlier data have suggested that IC affects almost 25% of women. To test this hypothesis, we used a validated IC symptom questionnaire and intravesical potassium sensitivity testing (PST), history, and physical examination to determine the prevalence of IC in a fixed population of young women.
METHODS: All female members of the University of Californi

Urologists may be concerned that treatment of patients with interstitial cystitis (IC) is not economically feasible, and the time spent on these patients could be used for more profitable urologic therapy. However, care of IC patients can provide urologic practices with increased revenue opportunities through a wide range of procedures, including IC evaluation and management, treatment planning, and diagnostic, therapeutic, and even surgical techniques. Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and evaluation and management (E&M) charge codes are provided for many types, levels, and complexities of

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a bladder syndrome of unknown etiology. The cause of IC is most likely multifactorial and includes genetic and environmental factors. Various pathophysiological changes in the bladder, pelvis, and peripheral and central nervous systems have been identified, and this has led to the emergence of biologically specific treatment modalities. Interstitial cystitis is being diagnosed with increasing frequency; however, current diagnostic criteria are non-uniform, and there is significant overlap between chronic pelvic pain syndromes in men and women, interstitial cystiti

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a poorly understood and underdiagnosed syndrome of chronic bladder/pelvic pain with urinary frequency and urgency. Though IC/BPS can be hereditary, little is known of its genetic etiology. Using the eMERGE data, we confirmed known phenotypic associations such as gastroesophageal reflux disease and irritable bowel syndrome and detected new associations, including osteoarthrosis/osteoarthritis and Barrett's esophagus. An exome wide ultra-rare variants analysis in 348 IC/BPS and 11,981 controls extended the previously reported association wi

Interstitial cystitis and interstitial cystitis-related conditions such as bladder pain syndrome and hypersensitive bladder have a similar symptomatic profile but probably different etiologies. A meaningful classification of these diseases/conditions is mandatory for clinical and investigational progress. The condition with Hunner lesions (Hunner type interstitial cystitis) is distinct from other categories in terms of histopathology, gene expression, and clinical management. Classification should clearly differentiate the presence or absence of Hunner lesions. The term covering patients as a

PURPOSE: Reported estimates of IC prevalence vary widely. The objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of IC among community-dwelling adult women.
METHODS: We analyzed survey responses from 215 established IC cases and 823 age-matched community-dwelling controls. Using a history of diagnosis of urinary conditions and presence of pelvic pain within the last six months, we identified those with possible IC among the controls using various operative definitions.
RESULTS: The prevalence rates of self-reported IC (SRIC) and IC-like symptoms (ICLS) among controls in the community wer

Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is a poorly understood yet prevalent condition accounting for a significant proportion of urology office visits. Identification of reliable biomarkers for disease remains an important yet challenging area of research given the heterogeneity of disease presentation and pathophysiology. A review of the literature by the authors revealed a handful of original investigations that revealed promising biomarkers within various physiologic processes or organ systems including immunity, inflammation, neural pathways, urothelial integrity, and anesthetic bladd

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome (PBS) is a debilitating condition, the etiology of which remains unclear and for which there are variable and often unsatisfactory treatment options. Within the last decade, evolving knowledge regarding the presence and role of the urinary microbiome has led to investigations regarding its impact on symptoms and severity of interstitial cystitis PBS.
RECENT FINDINGS: Since 2017, five studies have investigated differences between the microbiome of female patients with interstitial cystitis /PBS to asymptomatic controls. While va

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a heterogeneous chronic disease of unknown etiology that impacts a very large number of women. Symptoms are highly variable: patients may suffer from pelvic pain that is exacerbated by bladder filling, and can be associated with a variety of lower urinary tract symptoms including frequency and urgency. Given the varying presentations and severities of corresponding treatment must be tailored to each specific patient. Current American Urological Association (AUA) guidelines separate the IC treatment recommendations into six tiers of increasing invasive therapies. T

The overlap between interstitial cystitis-painful bladder syndrome and overactive bladder can present a diagnostic challenge to the treating practitioner. Both can present with similar patient symptoms. Further compounding this dilemma is the fact that no gold standard test exists to differentiate one from the other. This review will serve to highlight their similarities and distinguishing features.

Interstitial cystitis (IC), or painful bladder syndrome, is characterized by irritative voiding symptoms and can be a challenging problem that affects children and adolescents. Diagnosis and management in children and adolescents is challenging because of strict diagnostic criteria and the paucity of investigations focusing on this age group, which often can lead to delayed or missed diagnosis. Clinical features suggestive of IC include bladder pain, urgency, frequency, nocturia, and pressure. Symptoms may wax and wane and often are exacerbated by menstruation, intercourse, dietary triggers, a

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a symptom complex of urinary urgency, frequency and pelvic pain. Multimodality behavioral and phamacologic treatment is often effective in treating IC. Unfortunately, some patients with IC are refractory to standard treatments. Neuromodulation has been shown to be effective in treating voiding dysfunction. Small studies have demonstrated improvement in pelvic pain and IC symptoms during temporary sacral nerve stimulation. This current study demonstrates that patients refractory to traditional therapies for IC can respond well to sacral nerve stimulation and mainta

We report a case of lupus interstitial cystitis in 17 year-old female. The patient presented with suprapubic pain, urinary frequency, dysuria, nocturia and no bacterial growth. Intravenous pyelography showed a low capacity bladder with thickwall, and a bilateral ureterohydronephrosis. Interstitial cystitis was confirmed on bladder biopsy specimen. Clinical symptoms remained eventhough after steroid treatment. Clinical signs of cystitis occurring in a patient with systemic lupus erythematous could be a manifestation of a lupus cystitis.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate further the observation that men with prostatodynia may represent a subset of patients with interstitial cystitis.
METHODS: The charts of 20 patients with the diagnosis of nonbacterial prostatitis or prostatodynia who underwent cystoscopy and bladder hydrodistention were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: The primary complaint of all 20 patients was genital or rectal pain, or both. Ten patients reported irritative voiding symptoms. Twelve of the 20 patients developed petechial hemorrhages involving the bladder uroepithelium on hydrodistention. Bladder biopsies reve

The bladder mast cell contains many granules, each of which can secrete many vasoactive and nociceptive molecules. A number of conditions, such as extreme cold, drugs, neuropeptides, stress, trauma, and toxins, can trigger the mast cell to secrete some of its contents; they, in turn, can sensitize sensory neurons, which can further activate mast cells by releasing neurotransmitters or neuropeptides. Additionally, the mast cell can directly cause vasodilation and bladder mucosa damage while also attracting inflammatory cells, thus causing many of the problems seen in interstitial cystitis. The
