Nonspecific cell-mediated cytotoxicity was examined in the peripheral blood and spleens of normal and vaccinia virus-infected adult domestic cats. Natural cytotoxic (NC)-like cells, as measured by lysis of vaccinia- or HSV-infected, adherent cat tongue cells, were found in both the spleen and peripheral blood of normal, nonimmune cats. Cytotoxicity was expressed in a 16-hr assay but not in a 4-hr assay. Natural killer (NK) cells are innate immune lymphocytes that provide critical defense against virally infected and transformed cells. A cell-mediated cytotoxic response to respiratory syncytial (RSV) was demonstrated in the peripheral blood of 4 of 22 infants with acute bronchiolitis. These 4 infants were aged 3 weeks to 3 months. No such response was found in infants older than 4 months. All 4 infants with a positive response had mild infections.

This paper describes a simple methodology that allows reproducible generation of calibrated shear flows over a wide range (100-fold) of shear rates. This was illustrated by studying the dissociation by shear of alloimmune lymphocyte-target cell conjugates; mixtures of target tumor cells and immune lymphocytes of the same H-2 haplotype were used as controls. Occurrence of lymphocytotoxic antibodies of the "cold type" was studied in 92 cases with various lightdermatoses. They were detected in the sera of 39% of the patients with cutaneous porphyrias and never in cases with polymorphous light eruption and other photodermatosis. Correlations between their presence and the duration of the porphyria as well as the severity of hepatopathy could be observed. Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a life-threatening hyperinflammatory condition. A long-standing paradox in cellular immunology concerns the conditional requirement for CD4+ T-helper (T(H)) cells in the priming of cytotoxic CD8+ T lymphocyte (CTL) responses in vivo. Platelets isolated from patients infected with filariasis were cytotoxic for microfilariae in vitro. Moreover, platelets from normal donors acquired killing properties in the presence of serum from infected individuals. The humoral factor involved in this cytotoxic process was shown to be IgE. This IgE-dependent cytotoxicity of platelets was strongly inhibited by antigen-stimulated T lymphocyte supernatants from filarial patients.
