Non-contrast MR dacryocystography for the evaluation of epiphora and recurrent dacryocystitis: A preliminary study.

INTRODUCTION: Obstruction of the lacrimal drainage represents a common ophthalmologic issue. The blockage may interest any level of the lacrimal drainage pathway, and it is important to find the site of obstruction to plan the most appropriate treatment. In this study, findings from magnetic resonance (MR) dacryocystography were compared with findings from endoscopic and surgical procedures to evaluate the accuracy of MR dacryocystography in localizing the site of nasolacrimal duct obstruction. METHODS: We enrolled twenty-one patients with clinical suspicion of nasolacrimal duct obstruction w…

Computed Tomography Versus Dacryocystography for the Evaluation of the Nasolacrimal Duct-A Study With 72 Patients.

OBJECTIVES: In patients with epiphora, imaging of the nasolacrimal duct is essential not only for differential diagnosis, but also for preoperative planning. Advances in imaging technology and introduction of cone beam computed tomography (CB-CT) enable the combination of contrast agent-based imaging with a three dimensional tomography with low radiation exposure. However, the value of CT/CB-CT as an alternative to conventional dynamic dacryocystography (DCG) has not been evaluated yet. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: Conventional DCG was performed preoperatively in 72 consecutiv…

Simultaneous dacryocystography and dacryoscintigraphy using SPECT/CT in the diagnosis of nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

Epiphora, an abnormal overflow of tears, is commonly caused by tear drainage system anomalies including nasolacrimal duct obstruction. To assess morphologic abnormalities, dacryocystography by CT is used when CT contrast material is syringed into the lacrimal drainage system. To evaluate the function of the system, dacryoscintigraphy is the most readily available noninvasive method. In the case presented, a 43-year-old man was referred to our clinic with an 8 months' history of indefinite left side epiphora. After performing dacryoscintigraphy, we acquired SPECT/CT images during dacryocystogra…

Computed tomographic dacryocystography combined with multiplanar reconstruction technique in lacrimal duct probe placement.

BACKGROUND: CT dacryocystography (CT-DCG) combined with multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) enables precise evaluation of the bony nasolacrimal duct (BNLD) anatomy, which may guide surgical treatment for nasolacrimal duct obstruction (LNDO). This retrospective study aimed to identify key anatomical factors influencing lacrimal probe placement and to assess whether preoperative imaging improves clinical outcomes. METHODS: Between December 2018 and January 2022, 230 patients (257 eyes) with LNDO underwent CT-DCG and MPR before planned lacrimal probing and intubation. Reconstructed images were used …

[Bilateral dacryocystography using digital subtraction technic for kinetic evaluation of the lacrimal passage].

For dacryocystography we used the following procedure: after bilateral intubation of either the inferior or superior canaliculi with two galactography tubes connected with an Y-adapter, aqueous contrast medium (Ultravist 370) was injected. The lacrimal pathways were then imaged with the digital subtraction technique (Siemens Polytron), as well as with conventional film. In cases of postsaccal stenosis, the relative delay of contrast medium passage--compared with the normal side--could be specified. A diverticulum of the canaliculus and a transitional cell carcinoma of the lacrimal sac could be…

Congenital dacryocystocele with significant enlargement of the nasolacrimal duct diagnosed with computed tomography dacryocystography.

The authors successfully assessed the lacrimal systems of two patients with dacryocystocele based on dacryocystographic observations using computed tomographic scanning. The results showed that both the lacrimal sac and the nasolacrimal duct were largely distended, and the duct terminated in a closed cyst in the nasal cavity.

[Digital subtraction dacryocystography (DS-DCG) and evaluation of results of endonasal lacrimal duct surgery].

103 patients with obstructive epiphora, or illacrimation, underwent endonasal lacrimal surgery (dacryocystorhinostomy in the modification of Veis-Cdlaus and canaliculorhinostomy). Postoperative complications included local infections and were seen in 7 cases (6.8%). After finishing the treatment 90 patients (87.4%, Table 4) were free of symptoms and remained so for years of follow-up. Recurrent stenosis developed in 13 cases (12.6%). DS-DCG provides valuable information for confirming the indication for surgery and determining the surgical procedure in obstructive epiphora. In addition it may

Normative dimensions and symmetry of the lacrimal drainage system on dacryocystography: statistical analysis of morphometric characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Asymmetric lacrimal flow occurs in females more than males. We hypothesised that the normal lacrimal drainage system (LDS) may show subtle left-right asymmetry in morphometry when imaged on dacryocystography (DCG). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 60 normal bilateral LDSs.Images were analysed for 7 parameters: (1) combined length of either the superior or inferior canaliculus plus common canaliculus, (2) angle of insertion of common canaliculus into lacrimal sac (LS), (3, 4) length and width of the LS, (5) length of the naso lacrimal duct (NLD), and (6, 7) width …

[Factors influencing the long-term success of lacrimal duct surgery and the prognostic value of dacryocystography].

BACKGROUND: Irrigation of the lacrimal duct with silicone tube intubation, endoscopic microdrill dacryoplasty and external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) are commonly used in lacrimal duct surgery. Dacryocystography (DCG) is one of the standard procedures in preoperative imaging. This study evaluates the influence of individual parameters and the prognostic meaning of preoperative DCG on the success rates after lacrimal duct surgery, in order to predict more precisely the long-term outcome after different operative paradigms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 145 patients (mean age 60 years; 32 % male) wit…

MR dacryocystography in the evaluation of patients with obstructive epiphora treated by means of interventional radiologic procedures.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Most imaging techniques used for the evaluation of obstructive epiphora, such as DS DCG, rely on undesired ionizing radiation. We evaluated the efficacy of topical contrast-enhanced MR DCG in comparison with DS DCG in patients with obstructive epiphora who underwent balloon DCG or stent placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six LDSs of 21 patients treated with balloon DCG (n = 11) or stent placement (n = 11) were examined with MR DCG and DS DCG. Contralateral LDSs (n = 14) were also evaluated in patients with unilateral disease. A sterile 0.9% NaCl solution containi

Three-dimensional rotational dacryocystography for imaging of the lacrimal draining system and adjacent anatomical structures.

PURPOSE: A three-dimensional (3D) rotational angiography system was used to perform 3D dacryocystography (3DRD) as an adjunct to the conventional dacryocystography assisted by digital subtraction angiography (DSA). METHODS: In 15 patients with severe epiphora, 3DRD was performed after inconclusive results from DSA-assisted dacryocystography. RESULTS: 3DRD was technically feasible and well tolerated in all 15 cases. In 5 out of 15 patients, 3DRD, in contrast to DSA-assisted dacryocystography, distinguished clearly between stenotic lesions of the canaliculi, lacrimal sac or nasolacrimal duct. …
