Neural- and endocrine mechanisms controlling degeneration of a dorsal longitudinal flight muscle, M112a, have been studied in adult Gryllus bimaculatus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae). Decapitation completely prevented muscle degeneration. Implantation of a pair of corpora allata or injection of juvenile hormone III into decapitated crickets caused muscle degeneration. Destructive operations diminish the bulk of the foetus for facilitating vaginal delivery. Adenodermatofibroma is a newly recognized variant of dermatofibroma characterized by dense proliferation of fibroblasts and histiocytes admixed with dilated glandular structures showing apocrine secretion. Hidradenoma papilliferum is derived from apocrine sweat glands and was originally described as a tumor located in the anogenital area. Planarians are traditional model invertebrates in regeneration and developmental biology research that also display a variety of quantifiable behaviors useful to screen for pharmacologically active compounds. It appears that histologic change of apocrine glands may contribute more to bromhidrosis than bacterial decomposition of apocrine sweat. Surgical removal of apocrine glands may thus be the most satisfactory and logical method of treatment.

Rat fetuses with or without parathyroid glands (intact or decapitated at 17.5 days of gestation) were injected subcutaneously with the disodium salt of EDTA at 21.5 days of gestation. In the two groups, the unchelated plasma calcium levels were measured within 180 min following the injection. A case report is presented in which cytomegalic virus inclusion bodies were demonstrated in twin placentas and in both infants. This is the fourth such report in the English language literature. The case also demonstrated interlocking of the fetal heads requiring decapitation of the dead twin in order to deliver the surviving twin.
