The polyacrylic cements were first introduced to dentistry in the middle 1960's when Smith showed the value of the polyacids, in developing adhesion to enamel and dentine. Within 10 years, Wilson had advanced the concept by changing the powder from a zinc oxide to glass and at the same time varying the poly-acid used. Both cements depend on the development of complex polyacrylate chains which can be linked with metal ions and in turn can form dynamic linkages with both enamel and dentine. The original polycarboxylate cement has many desirable characteristics and is still a useful cement for lu…

An ultrasonic descaler working at kHz frequencies is used in dentistry to remove attached deposits from the teeth. Such devices offer many advantages over conventional hand instruments by reducing both the work and time involved in the clinical descaling process. Although it is a recognised clinical instrument, there has been little attempt to standardise its acoustic power output. A parameter which may characterise adequately the acoustic emission from these instruments is the displacement amplitude of the probe tip. Modification of the ultrasonic descaler generator has led to the further use…

The first part of this report contains data on the pitfalls which may be encountered during the diagnosis of conditions for which reconstructive dentistry is applicable: dental caries, pulpitis, pulpo -arthritis, desmodontitis . The second part enumerates possible pitfalls during reconstructive dental surgery: anesthesia, arsenical dressings, use of canal pins and of ozone, canal obturation and its immediate consequences, nerve root artefacts and sections under anesthesia, apical cysts, caries obturation.

Direct statistical evidence of the value of routine, periodic dental examination and treatment is lacking and inferences can only be drawn from surveys of population samples and groups of people. Except perhaps in areas of exceptionally favourable dentist: population ratios the restorative philosophy makes too high a demand on scarce professional resources for it to answer the treatment needs of populations. However, it was originally developed to benefit individual patients who sought dental care and the evidence at present suggests that it may postpone the loss of teeth. It is hypothesized t

Conduct a bibliometric analysis of articles related to dentistry and autism. A search strategy was constructed and conducted at the Web of Science database. The following information was extracted from each paper: title, authorship, year of publication, title of the journal, study subject dental care, oral health status, dental behavior support), study design, and number of citations. A total of 2,637 articles were obtained from the WoS-CC search. After selection, 422 papers were included, published from 1996 to 2024, and had 6,728 citations. Observational studies constituted most publications…

This article brings together some of the 'hidden disabilities' common amongst adolescents and young adults. Many of these conditions carry a social stigma and some are associated with secretive behaviour and even denial. The article will describe the features, management and oral implications of five eating disorders (Prader-Willi syndrome, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and pica) and three types of mental health problems (schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder). Without the input of the dental profession, and in the main the primary dental

Background: Recent advances in mRNA vaccine technology, accelerated by the global COVID-19 pandemic, have generated significant interest in their applications beyond infectious diseases. Dentistry has emerged as a promising field for exploring the potential of mRNA-based therapies in preventing and treating oral diseases. Objectives: This narrative review aims to evaluate the current status of mRNA vaccine development and its preclinical applications in oral health, focusing on periodontal disease, dental caries, regenerative medicine, implantology, and oral cancer. Methods: The review synthes…

This article provides a comprehensive overview of dental disease in myomorphic rodents, particularly rats and hamsters, which are increasingly being presented to veterinary clinics due to their popularity as pets. The most common dental problems include malocclusion, periodontal disease, caries, and odontogenic abscesses. Diagnosis is based on a thorough clinical examination, stomatoscopy under anesthesia and imaging-techniques such as radiography and computed tomography, which are crucial for detecting pathologic lesions, planning treatment, and preventing complications. Treatment strategies

An adverse drug reaction (ADR) is an undesirable effect of a drug. ADRs are possible with any medication that is prescribed or administered in the dental office. While most pharmacological agents in use today have favourable drug profiles and are relatively safe, the prudent clinician must be aware of the potential ADRs that can occur and be prepared to manage any complications. Here we review the most commonly used agents in dentistry, namely local anaesthetics, sedatives, analgesics and antibiotics, and their ADRs and management.

Dental implants are regularly placed in patients with a history of periodontitis, even though peri-implant tissues are susceptible to the same host-modulated plaque-induced factors that initiate and sustain periodontitis. This article endeavors to clarify the evidence regarding the history of periodontitis as a risk factor for implant success and survival, and the role of supportive periodontal therapy in maintaining implants for individuals with a history of periodontitis.

Medical emergencies that are life threatening can occur in dental practice. Complications may arise because of an underlying disease or a reaction to medication. Reactions to medications may be allergic and toxic. The most common reactions are toxic reactions to local anesthetics, whereas allergies occur mainly as a consequence of the application of antibiotics, usually penicillin. In response to stress, vasovagal syncope typically occurs. Other causes may be related to an underlying disease-specific pathology (such as acute asthma attack, diabetic ketoacidosis, hypoglycemia, or seizures) or a
