Background/objective: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health issue affecting about 19% of mothers globally. It has well-documented impacts on maternal well-being, mother-infant relationships, and child developmental outcomes. At the same time, the level of vitamin D deficiency in women of reproductive age is very high (affecting 60-87 percent of pregnant women globally). The review aims to synthesize current evidence and highlight priority research areas to improve maternal mental health outcomes. Methods: A systematic literature search of PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar

IMPORTANCE: Hormonal contraceptive (HC) use is associated with depression. It is, however, unknown whether this is also true in the postpartum period when women have a heightened depression risk and are routinely offered HC treatment.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether HC initiation post partum is associated with the development of depression within 12 months post partum.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A population-based cohort study based on nationwide Danish register data was conducted including all primiparous women who gave birth from January 1, 1997, through December 31, 2022. Women were

Postpartum depression (PPD) is an increasingly prevalent but still poorly characterized disorder. Causal and modulating factors include hormones fluctuations, such as estrogen, progesterone, and allopregnolone, pathways imbalances, such as oxytocin and kynurenine, chronobiological factors, and brain imaging alterations. Treatment may differ from the traditional major depression management, while selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as sertraline are commonly used and suggested by guidelines, neurosteroids such as brexanolone and the more convenient zuranolone have been recently approve

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common public health concern. A wide range of functional abnormalities in various brain regions have been reported in fMRI studies on PPD, however, a consistent functional changing pattern is still lacking. Herein, we obtained functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data from 52 patients with PPD and 24 healthy postpartum women (HPW). Functional indexes (low-frequency fluctuation, degree centrality, and regional homogeneity) were calculated and compared among these groups to explore the functional changing patterns of PPD. Then, correlation analyses were p

Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common postpartum psychiatric disorder, which can negatively affect both mothers and their offspring. Although the functional changes of PPD have been extensively studied, little is known about its structural abnormalities. This study aimed to examine the cortical and subcortical morphological abnormalities in PPD. High resolution T1 structural MRI data of 29 PPD women and 23 matched healthy postpartum women (HPW) were included in this study. Using surface-based morphometry, we examined the differences between the PPD and HPW group in the cortical thickn

Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common psychological condition following childbirth, and may have a detrimental effect on the social and cognitive health of spouses, infants, and children. The aim of this study was to complete a comprehensive overview of the current literature on the global epidemiology of PPD. A total of 565 studies from 80 different countries or regions were included in the final analysis. Postpartum depression was found in 17.22% (95% CI 16.00-18.51) of the world's population. Meta-regression analysis showed that study size, country or region development, and countr

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a prevalent mood disorder estimated to affect 20%-40% of women worldwide after childbirth. In recent studies, the effect of vitamin D on prevention of mood disorders and depression has been investigated, but it is still unclear how vitamin D may affect PPD. The evidence on the relevance between vitamin D deficiency and PPD is inconsistent, and assessment of the recent literature has not previously been carried out. Moreover, there are few clinical studies on PPD and vitamin D supplementation. Five studies have so far assessed the relationship between the levels o

Postpartum depression (PPD) is one of the most common examples of postnatal morbidity, but the subsequent risks of autoimmune diseases in patients with PPD have yet to be fully investigated. This nationwide population-based study utilized data of the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan for the period from 1996 to 2013. In total, 45,451 women with primiparity were identified. Among them, 542 patients with PPD were enrolled as a study group while 2165 matched patients without PPD were enrolled as a control group. The demographic characteristics and comorbidities of the patients

OBJECTIVES: The childbirth constitutes a significant event in a woman's life and in the marital/ couple dyad. The changes which follow childbirth require re-organization of previous coping styles and development of new methods of adaptation, which proves difficult. The current study evaluated to what extent the development of postpartum depression symptoms in new mothers was associated with their level of satisfaction in marital relationship.
METHODS: The study included 100 women in their first month after delivery. The women completed questionnaires regarding postpartum depression (Postpartu

BACKGROUND: Maternal depression in the postpartum period confers substantial morbidity and mortality, but the definition of postpartum depression remains controversial. We investigated the heterogeneity of symptoms with the aim of identifying clinical subtypes of postpartum depression.
METHODS: Data were aggregated from the international perinatal psychiatry consortium Postpartum Depression: Action Towards Causes and Treatment, which represents 19 institutions in seven countries. 17,912 unique subject records with phenotypic data were submitted. We applied latent class analyses in a two-tiere

Bipolar disorder is a serious and often chronic disorder characterized by episodes of depression, hypomania, mania or mixed states that affects many individuals worldwide, and is a leading cause of years of 'Работает' life lost as a result of disability and premature mortality. For women, bipolar disorder tends to cluster during the childbearing years. Detection of bipolar disorder can be complicated and therefore it is essential that women presenting with mood episodes after childbirth receive a comprehensive examination to allow for accurate diagnosis, with particular attention to manic sympt

BACKGROUND: Maternal plasma lipids, including total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), increase during pregnancy, remaining elevated over prepregnancy levels through the immediate postpartum period. Triglycerides decrease rapidly to prepregnancy levels after delivery. Few data on postpartum lipid levels are available, and levels in postpartum women with depression have not been evaluated. We sought to determine the cross-sectional levels of total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, and triglycerides between 1 and 14 weeks postpart

Research on postpartum mood disorders has focused primarily on major depressive disorder, bipolar I disorder, and puerperal psychosis and has largely ignored or neglected bipolar II disorder. Hypomanic symptoms are common after delivery but frequently unrecognized. DSM-IV does not consider early postpartum hypomania as a significant diagnostic feature. Although postpartum hypomania may not cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning, it is often associated with subsequent, often disabling depression. Preliminary evidence suggests that bipolar II depression arising in the post

BACKGROUND: Acute cardiac complications occur occasionally during pregnancy and in the immediate postpartum period. Some of these cardiac scenarios are rare and provide a diagnostic challenge. We report a case of apical ballooning syndrome (ABS), also known as takotsubo cardiomyopathy or broken-heart syndrome, in a postpartum patient.
CASE: A 32-year-old multigravid woman presented at 17 days after delivery with chest pain typical for cardiac ischemic pain. Her prior obstetrical history included two uncomplicated vaginal deliveries, and the current postpartum period had been uncomplicated unt

In order to assess the effects of the onset and chronicity of maternal depression on neonatal physiology, eighty pregnant women were assessed for depression during mid-pregnancy (M gestational age = 25.9 weeks) and shortly after delivery. The women were classified as reporting depressive symptoms 1) only during the prepartum assessment; 2) only during the postpartum assessment; 3) during both the prepartum and postpartum assessments; or 4) reporting no depressive symptoms at either the prepartum or the postpartum assessment. Maternal mood and biochemistry were assessed during pregnancy, and th

This review examines proposed endocrine-based etiologies of postpartum depression (PPD) and how knowledge of these etiologies may affect future treatments. It is based on a review of papers shedding light on the etiology of PPD with special emphasis on research into endocrine-related depression. A picture of PPD is starting to emerge that suggests a variety of endocrine root causes as well as psychosocial risk factors. Hormones reviewed include progesterone, estradiol and estriol, cortisol, corticotropin-releasing hormone, prolactin, thyroid-stimulating hormone and triiodothyronine/thyroxine.

IMPORTANCE: Hormonal sensitivity may contribute to the risk of depression in some women, as observed during the premenstrual, postpartum, and perimenopausal phases, and when initiating hormonal contraception (HC). However, little evidence exists to support that such depressive episodes are linked across the reproductive life span.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether prior depression associated with HC initiation is coupled with a higher risk of postpartum depression (PPD) than prior depression not associated with HC initiation.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum hemorrhage is an important cause of maternal death and morbidity. However, it is unclear whether women who experience postpartum hemorrhage are at an increased risk of postpartum depression.
OBJECTIVES: To examine whether postpartum hemorrhage is associated with postpartum depression.
METHODS: We conducted a national register-based cohort study of 486,476 Swedish-born women who had a singleton livebirth between 2007 and 2014. We excluded women with pre-existing depression or who filled a prescription for an antidepressant before childbirth. We classified postpartum dep
